20.01.2022 I'd like to talk today about creating a health and safety culture. The health and safety culture of an organisation is measured by the attitudes, values and beliefs that workers share with respect to work health and safety. Frequent and informal communication between workers and management on safety and injury management raises workers' awareness of health and safety matters and can potentially contribute to a positive preventative safety culture. Statistics show that peop...le work more safely when they are involved in the decision-making process and have immediate feedback about their work. Managers who model behaviour by making a personal contribution to WHS consultation can significantly change the way their team thinks about health and safety in the workplace. Rewarding positive contributions to health and safety in the workplace has lasting effects on culture change. A workplace health and safety management system (WHSMS) can be thought of as a particular, organisation-wide approach, instituted by a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU), in order to minimise the risk of injury and illness arising from the conduct of their undertaking. Broadly, a WHSMS provides a focus on improving safety performance through a systematic approach integrating WHS planning, implementation and review. However, a WHSMS is not simply the existence of forms, processes or policies. Rather, a WHSMS must bring to life the content of that safety documentation in an ongoing and managed way that reduces risk and improves organisational safety outcomes. So what might a WHSMS look like? It should be risk-focused, fit for purpose, improved through learning and review and sensitive to human factors and behaviour. This might include: - visible involvement and commitment from senior management, - proof that health and safety policies and procedures have been implemented, - clearly assigned responsibilities and monitoring of performance at the various management levels, - specific program elements that include the identification and monitoring of hazards and emerging risk, such as robust worker consultative arrangements as an essential element, reporting, investigation of incidents and ongoing workplace inspections, - the collection and analysis of data in order to assist the prevention effort, - the availability of targeted health and safety training relevant to the undertaking, - consideration of health and safety aspects in the design of work and throughout the product or service lifecycle, including through purchasing arrangements, - first aid arrangements and health monitoring appropriate to the health risks at the workplace, emergency management and response procedures in place, and a continuing mechanism for WHSMS monitoring and evaluation. Thanks for your time, Deborah #workhealthaustralia #healthandsafetyculture #WHSplanning #workplacesafety

02.01.2022 Benefits to Business: Investing in Worker Health and Wellbeing There are numerous reasons why investing in programs to enhance worker health and wellbeing makes good business sense. Put simply, healthy workers = healthy organisations = healthy business performance. Employers who run health and wellbeing programs do so because they want to: ... - improve work performance and productivity - reduce costs associated with absenteeism, presenteeism, disability and workers’ compensation - improve the culture of the organisation and retain existing employees - improve the organisation’s image, attract talented employees and fulfil corporate social responsibility obligations. Research on the relationship between health and productivity found that healthy workers are more productive at work than unhealthy workers in fact, almost three times more effective at work than the least healthy employees. Healthy workers rate their work performance as much higher than unhealthy workers and they have far fewer short-term absences than unhealthy workers. Workplace health and wellbeing programs can significantly improve the health of employees. Investing in employee health and wellbeing is synonymous with investing in your business for better organizational and financial outcomes. #workhealthaustralia #healthyworkforce #performanceandproductivity #workerhealth #workerwellbeing
