24.01.2022 After 17 years work, the first Cape York Indigenous language dictionary published in 20 years, is finished. https://www.abc.net.au//dictionary-of-unique-cap/12525128

23.01.2022 Have a good weekend

23.01.2022 Interesting reading and points to ponder in this article. "To eliminate a virus from the human population is incredibly difficult. Weve only ever done it with one human pathogen, and thats smallpox," Dr Short says. "To do that, you need a global vaccination strategy. On top of that, you need a vaccine that provides essentially 100 per cent protection against the virus and against any mutations the virus might throw up. And no animal reservoir. Thats a pretty tall order."... https://www.abc.net.au//covid-coronavirus-how-do-/12596954

22.01.2022 What a great way to learn about Parliament and to introduce deliberative democracy

22.01.2022 Our first face to face Northern Qld Community Engagement Network evening for quite a while due to COVID at the Pullman International. Lots of catching up and discussion about ideas, challenges and opportunities relating to our collective work and community engagement in general. Sioux gave an IAP2 update as well. Weve agreed to meet the third Thursday of each month and to reach out to our individual networks and colleagues to strengthen numbers. Now, more than ever authentic engagement is vitally important.

21.01.2022 Watching the IAP2 Australasia live stream of the 2020 Core Values Awards and a quote from Tracey appeared! Congratulations to all the winners for 2020. It’s been a challenging year for those of us who connect people, communities and authentic conversations. #corevaluesawards2020

20.01.2022 Its been some time since enrolments opened for our "Engaging Communities: Transforming Facilitation and Conflict Resolution Masterclass" scheduled for Cairns, and much has occurred during that time. We have consulted with associated trainers and the course developer around delivering the course using the myriad of technology available, but we all agreed that the beauty of the course is the personal and professional journey that participants embark upon from commencement of ...the course until its completion. We all feel the true learnings cant be replicated on-line. Therefore, given the fluid COVID 19 circumstances we have taken a cautionary approach and have postponed the next Cairns delivery of the Course to 9-11 March 2021. If circumstances change we update information on our website and social media.

20.01.2022 Hope Vale yesterday, early breakfast meeting this morning in Cairns before another full day. I was the only person on the Skytrans flight back Cooktown to Cairns - it was a quick trip!

18.01.2022 The Productivity Commission has just released it's report entitled Australia’s mental health: we would all benefit from an improved mental health system. This is an important piece of work as mental ill-health affects all Australians either directly or indirectly. Almost one in five Australians has experienced mental illness in a given year. Many do not receive the treatment and support they need. As a result, too many people experience preventable physical and mental dist...ress, disruptions in education and employment, relationship breakdown, stigma, and loss of life satisfaction and opportunities. A summary of the report's finding is that to create a person centred mental health system, Australia needs reforms that: Focus on prevention and early help: early in life and early in illness. Provide the right healthcare at the right time for those with mental illness. Make sure effective services support recovery in community. Provide seamless care, regardless of the level of government providing the funding or service. The report can be viewed via this link. http://www.pc.gov.au/inquiri/completed/mental-health/report

18.01.2022 The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs 2020 report has been released. It says, in part, that by 2025 the time spent on current tasks at work by humans and machines will be equal and that automation, in tandem with the COVID-19 recession, is creating a ‘double-disruption’ scenario for workers. In addition to the current disruption from the pandemic-induced lockdowns and economic contraction, technological adoption by companies will transform tasks, jobs and skills by 2025. https://www.weforum.org//the-future-of-jobs-report-/digest

18.01.2022 On this day in 1963, the Yirrkala bark petitions, sent by the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land to the Australian Parliament were the first traditional documents pre...pared by Indigenous Australians that were recognised by the Government, and the first documentary recognition of Indigenous people in Australian law. The petitions were written in the Yolngu language, together with an English translation. They are on permanent display at Parliament House, Canberra. https://blogs.crikey.com.au//the-yirrkala-bark-petitions-/

16.01.2022 Attended the opening of Hambledon House under Mission Australias management today. It was an exciting event with Regional Manager Dr Phil Flint presiding, Curtis Pitt MP having the honour of the offical opening and lucky to have Coralee ORourke MP also in attendance. The live cross to Mission Australias CEO James Toomey via teams and live-streamed on Communities for Children Cairns South FB page went withouth a hitch. Regional Pastor Noel gave a lovely message about how ...staying apart is keeping us together and safe and reminding us of the importance of places like Hambledon House in times of struggle and uncertainty. Cafe 1 supplied great food and coffee. Well done to Margaret Osmond and the team for a fantastic event. Im excited to be working with the MA team managing the implementation of the Cairns South Coalition with Hon Curtis Pitt MP as Chair and Cr Cathy Zeiger as Deputy Chair. Watch this space as the project and collaboration unfolds. #CommunitiesForChildren #CairnsSouthCoalition #hambledonhouse See more

10.01.2022 I tend to agree with this commentary. Whilst therell always be need for people with various levels of tertiary education in some professions, smart organisations are seeking to develop workers skills through tailored short and professional development and promotion of critical thinking and strong communication skills...... Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott, authors of The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity, offer three features that will define work in the 21st century. https://www.weforum.org//how-edtech-will-transform-learnin

08.01.2022 It is with great sadness that I mark the passing of my friend and colleague Tim Mulherin today. Tim was the epitome of what a public servant and leader should be - he served the people of Mackay and Queensland selflessly and passionately. Tim chose politics as a cause and a lifelong passion but his strength was his connection with people. He displayed his love for his beautiful wife Erin, the three boys and his large extended family in all that he did. Vale Tim Mulherin. "A thought of that late death took all my heart for speech."

07.01.2022 This is unreal - a farm and training facility in a skyscraper. And In Japan unused office buildings are being converted into hydroponic farms, growing primarily greens, to provide fresh produce to inner city residents.

05.01.2022 Another very interesting project finalised. Well done to all involved for some innovative thinking on a complex matter, but also for some very practical advice and feedback on ways to educate, inform and communicate more effectively around water conservation. Interestingly, it rained on the way back to Mackay, after an obviously long dry spell. #authenticengagement #watermatters #communications #complexity #sustainability

04.01.2022 Vale Ruth Bader Ginsberg So many steps forward for us all

03.01.2022 As a member of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service board I welcome this announcement by the Premier and Health Minister today. Almost $53m investment towards the health and wellbeing of residents across our region. And a start to long term investment in research through a University Hospital. #CHHHS #healthmatters
