18.01.2022 MAIN STREET MURAL WITH MEANING Margaret Rivers main street just got a new mural. The extensive mural titled Wadandi Boodjarra is a collaboration between lo...cal artists Ian Mutch, Jack Bromell and Sandra Hill depicting Wadandi home country, local flora, and iconic Forest Red-tailed Black Cockatoos. Ms Hill says the design features a strong red line on the corner of the building that runs from top to bottom. This line symbolises the blood line of family all the way back to the creation story of the Margaret River (place of Wooditch)," says Ms Hill. "This red blood line runs through our country. The creation of Wooditjup (Margaret River) is an ancient story that has been told by our people long before colonisation and the River is a fully registered and very important Aboriginal site. The central brown circle depicts home country, Wadandi Boodjarra (Wadandi home country). The patterns in the middle circle are our traditional markings on our shields. The red circle symbolises old, ancient blood. The black line circle symbolises our community. The ochre dots on the outside symbolise our family clan groups, she said. Youll find the mural opposite the Wooditchup Centre towards the southern end of town. Image courtesy: Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

12.01.2022 The arts and culture sector has been hit hard by COVID-19 - and virtually every artform is still facing complex issues and uncertainty. Id like to thank WA art...ists, musicians, performers and everyone involved in these industries for their patience and understanding during this difficult time. Its important that we help our local artists get back on their feet and back on the road - and thats what were doing as part of our WA Recovery Plan. Today weve announced a number of initiatives that will help make this happen, and help create new jobs to support our arts industry. Weve created the Getting the Show back on the Road package to reactivate live performances and touring activities across WA. That package include $5.65 million of waived fees for local performing arts companies to use State Government venues, a contribution to events delivered by WAM and up to $9 million to underwrite COVID-19 related financial risks for live music and performance. This is vital funding to enable local shows to get underway in the current environment - and will relieve financial pressures which could otherwise prevent them going ahead. Lotterywest are also providing $5 million of funding for the Creative Communities Recovery - Artists in Residency Program which will provide valuable employment opportunities for individual artists to work with local communities, activate spaces and deliver broad community benefits. Today weve also announced two new projects today for to iconic WA venues, with a $30 million upgrade on the way for the Perth Concert Hall, and $15 million for further upgrades and restoration work at His Majestys Theatre. These projects will create local jobs in construction, and will set the stage for the future of WA performing arts. Its been a tough time for WA artists - but this funding will help get them get back in business and back to creating great WA works.
12.01.2022 Dominican-born, Evoca1 is the talented artist behind Pingrup, Western Australia, Australias towering silo mural art. Painting has always been a central theme i...n Evoca1s life, and he began painting as a child, focusing on the many ways to represent human beings. His work describes his vision of life through evocative metaphors where children, men, women and animals are symbols of his personal history and of social struggles. His interaction with the local environments has been essential in generating the concept of his work and hes participated in public art projects right around the world! And were ecstatic that Evoca1 has left his colourful mark on country WA! Have you seen Pingrups silo art? See more

07.01.2022 IMPOSSIBLE TRIANGLE Brian McKay and Ahmad Abas 1997 In 1997, WA artists were invited to submit designs for a major public art commission as part of the East... Perth redevelopment. The chosen concept, came from iconic West Australian artist Brian McKay and architect Ahmad Abas Titled the Impossible Triangle, the concept was wholeheartedly endorsed by the committee with one amendment - in order to create a bold and highly visible landmark, the size of the sculpture was increased from the original design concept height of 9 metres to a final height of 13.5 metres. A sculpture in the real world of one of the most famous impossible objects, a Penrose Triangle, the Impossible Triangle is an optical illusion which becomes a fully proportioned triangle when viewed from only one point dead on. The design striations are effective on the polished aluminium surface as they reflect both sunlight and artificial lighting which dramatically changes the impact of the artwork from sunrise to sunset. Brian McKay was born in Meckering WA, in 1926 passing away in Perth in 2014. Representing Australia in the Childrens Art Exhibition at New Yorks World Fair in 1939, Brians work spans six decades and is featured in numerous local, national and international exhibitions and collections. Following a long stint in Greece and UK, McKay returned to Perth in 1975, joining the Praxis group and in 1981 he became part of the legendary Media Space Group. Dedicated to improving the state of the arts in WA he played a major role in the formation of the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. He was Chair of the PICA - Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts Trust from 1985 1988. In 1982 The Art Gallery of Western Australia held a major survey of his work. Among his many accolades, Brian was awarded the prestigious AusCo Emeritus Fellowship in 1990 and the Order of Australia in 1991, for services to contemporary art and education. Ahmad Abas is an award winning Perth architect who has had a strong local involvement in the arts, since 1990. In addition to working on major commercial architectural projects both locally and overseas, Ahmad has worked prolifically in design and construction on numerous plays, sculptures, exhibitions and events, often working in collaboration with other leading local artists. 02.01.2022 Recent digging in the West End for the Pipes for Fremantle project has uncovered some of the original jarrah block road surface dating back to the late 1890s! T...he blocks were inspected and recorded by the projects archaeologists and then covered back up, with the new pipes rerouted to prevent any damage. Up until WW1, Jarrah was WAs biggest export with the blocks used to pave the streets of cities such as London and Berlin.
