21.01.2022 My outfit for #perthfrocktails is ready! I was worried about not having made something warm to go with it - but at 37 degrees I am now worried about the heat! I made everything myself, except for the shoes - learning about that next month at a @the_shoe_camaraderie workshop! #phoebeflounce top and #phoebemaxi skirt in my own fabric design form #Spoonflower, @orange_lingerie #devonshirebra , self drafted undies, and a @kylieandthemachine #idaclutch! 19.01.2022 a lovely blog post form Sue Stoney!

18.01.2022 Our written and spoken language is replete with terms and phrases that reference the Attire language, to how we use the clothing and accessories we employ each ...day. We have all heard the phrase, Gird your loins well, this is actually how that is done. Thanks to The Art of Manliness and to mirandemia who took it up for those who wear gowns. So gather up the skirts of your tunic or dress and get ready for some hard work! See more

18.01.2022 The dresses in the Klimt paintings were real and created by a woman called Emilie Flöge, sadly a name forgotten in the mists of time. Here she is modelling the real dress, her creation ‘Woman in Gold’ painting

14.01.2022 I am (slowly) working on my swimwear pattern, and to test the versatility I made undies from it. This is some green knit and stretch lace I had in my stash, and after the first tester, I loved the accidental combo so much I made more! I am really happy with the comfort factor and the finish which doesn’t show through clothing. - - - -... - - - - #sewingisforeveryone #sewover50 #so50visible #perthsewing #sewingchallenge #sewthatpatternnow #sewathon #icansewit #stashbusting #patternunion #memade #memadeeveryday #sewcialist #sewcialists #sewistsofinstagram #inclusivesewing #sewingisforeveryone #diyfashion #fortheloveofsewing #handmadeclothes #handmadewardrobe #imadethis #imakemyclothes #slowfashionmovement #sewistsofinstagram #sewingismtsuperpower See more

08.01.2022 this course has been updated, and will be available soon! I highly recommend it.

07.01.2022 Materials made from the naturally golden colored silk of the Golden Orb spider native to Madagascar are without any question the rarest, and most labor intensiv...e of textiles ever devised and created by humans. As a point of reference it takes about 23,000 spiders to produce 1 ounce of silk. The 4 meter long textile was made as the shawl you see. It took 5 years of time and over 80 people to collect the silk and another 4 to weave it. It was a project undertaken by English Art historian specializing in textiles, Simon Peers, and his American business partner Nicholas Godley. A second spider silk project was undertaken by Peers and Godley which resulted in this astounding cape which required the silk of over 1 million golden orb spiders to produce. Both items were showcased at the V&A in 2012. Finally, the spiders are collected every morning before silk is extracted from them by trained handlers. They are not harmed in the process and are returned to the wild at the end of each day. The last known spider silk textile was made for an exhibition in Paris in 1900 but no examples remain. 07.01.2022 This gorgeous thing is a raincoat. Yes indeed it is. It is from Japan, the late Edo period, between 1790 and 1800 approximately. Like so much clothing from oth...er times, the things that are the most workday rarely survive the years because they serve well until they fall to rags, so this is a rare thing and a wonderful look at how the Japanese people approached dealing with inclement weather. The coat is made from a sturdy linen, (part of the reason for its survival),and lined with indigo dyed silk of a plain weave. The linen outer surface has been treated with what is referred to on the museum’s web page as an organic glaze. I do wish they’d been more specific. In western culture rain gear has been treated with oil or wax, (hence the name oil cloth), in order to make them rain proof. I suspect in this case the linen has been treated with wax, which would account for the somewhat fractured look to the surface which occurs as the wax is worn away over time. This is also a stunningly contemporary looking piece of work, with its standing collar and one sided closure. Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

06.01.2022 Sewing with @suestoney in the studio. She was helping me test a couple of new patterns - we only needed 4 machines - if you don’t count mine! even with all our chatting and laughter we get stuff done.
