18.01.2022 The Pacific still includes the most number of countries in the world that have had no recorded COVID-19 cases. However, there is no room for complacency given the growing challenges that Pacific countries continue to face to protect their people, their livelihoods and their future. To support each country’s COVID-19 response, we have provided emergency funding to nine countries in the Pacific, including the Federated States of Micronesia , Fiji , Kiribati , Marshall Islands , Papua New Guinea , Samoa , Tonga , Tuvalu and Vanuatu . "I am happy about our new classrooms. They are clean, strong and beautiful. I believe these new classrooms will help me to do better and improve my studies. Our old classrooms were not as good as the new ones we have. We even have whiteboards now." 12.01.2022 The World Bank 2020 Human Capital Index report covers 174 countries - measuring the knowledge, skills and health a country's people accumulate over a lifetime - and is now live: http://wrld.bg/pQB630ra03T. Below are some results from the Pacific, showing each country's population's current measure, and trajectories: Federated States of Micronesia: 51% Fiji: 51%... Kiribati: 49% Marshall Islands: 42% Nauru: 51% Palau: 59% Papua New Guinea: 43% Samoa: 55% Solomon Islands: 42% Tonga: 53% Tuvalu: 45% Vanuatu: 45% *Arrows indicate either an increase or decrease, based on changes recorded in these countries in comparison to the Human Capital Index figures from 2018, where available. The top five countries include Canada, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore with the highest score of 88%. While there have been some marked improvements over the years, COVID-19 pandemic threatens to wipe out a decade of human capital gains, as countries struggle to contain the virus, save lives and rebuild their economies. So we are very happy to be supporting Tonga's newly opened Ha’apai Multi-Hazard Early Warning & Emergency Operation Centre. The Ha'apai group is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters and this center will provide families with crucial and potentially life saving early warnings of incom...ing hazards. Prime Minister Reverend Dr. Pohiva Tui’onetoa officially opened the center that was built through the Pacific Resilience Program (PREP) managed by the government with funding from the World Bank. 02.01.2022 In Solomon Islands, the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement Project, has created more than 110,000 days of work for those out of work in urban areas of Western Province, Malaita and Guadalcanal. The US$15 million project is getting unemployed Solomon Islanders to work - improving basic infrastructure and services and improving access for clinics, schools, markets and more!
