25.01.2022 I had a family come and buy 1000 worms to start their family worm farm recently. Turns out the family has adopted a 'no waste' policy in 2020 and they have set up a Facebook page for tips etc. Check here if you are interested in reducing not only your organic waste but all forms of waste. https://www.facebook.com/thewastefreefamily/

25.01.2022 I have had a couple of customers recently who have had a poor experience after purchasing worms from a major retailer. One lady reported the container of worms smelt bad on purchase and subsequently these worms in her bin disappeared quickly. She came to me and purchased about twice as many worms for the same dollars that she had spent previously. Another 2 customers had read/been told that they should be tipping a bucket of water into the bed every week. I do not ag...ree with this on a few fronts. Worms breathe through their skin and it is easy to drown them. The environment may become anaerobic and this tends to be preferred by several non-beneficial bacteria, even harmful ones. Good castings are not smelly and aerobic and contain lots of beneficial bacteria, as outlined in some of my previous posts. The volume of water will create lots of liquid, but I believe of dubious quality. See more

19.01.2022 Earthworms intestine contains a wide range of microorganisms, enzymes and hormones which aid in rapid decomposition of half-digested material transforming them into vermicompost in a short time (neary 48 weeks) (Ghosh et al. 1999; Nagavallemma et al. 2004) compared to traditional composting process which takes the advantage of microbes alone and thereby requires a prolonged period (nearly 20 weeks) for compost production (Bernal et al. 1998; Sánchez-Monedero et al. 2001). As... the organic matter passes through the gizzard of the earthworm it is grounded into a fine powder after which the digestive enzymes, microorganisms and other fermenting substances act on them further aiding their breakdown within the gut, and finally passes out in the form of casts which are later acted upon by earthworm gut associated microbes converting them into mature product, the vermicomposts (Dominguez and Edwards 2004). 18.01.2022 I have been doing a little reading lately. Did you know A teaspoon of good garden soil can contain a billion invisible bacteria (20000 to 30000 different species), several yards of invisible fungal hyphae, several thousand protozoa and few dozen nematodes. While a few bacteria known as chemosynthesizers derive energy from sulphur, nitrogen and iron compounds, the rest have to eat carbon to get the energy needed to fuel their metabolism

17.01.2022 Vermicomposting of cow manure using earthworm species E. andrei (Atiyeh et al. 2000b) and E. foetida (Hand et al. 1988) favored nitrification, resulting in the rapid conversion of ammonium-nitrogen to nitrate-nitrogen. Vermicomposting increased the concentration of nitrate-nitrogen to 28 fold after 17 weeks, while in conventional compost there was only 3-fold increase (Subler et al. 1998; Atiyeh et al. 2000a). Increase in ash concentration during vermicomposting suggests that vermicomposting accelerates the rate of mineralization (Albanell et al. 1988). Mineralization is the process in which the chemical compounds in the organic matter decompose or oxidise into forms that could be easily assimilated by the plants. 17.01.2022 I have posted several articles about improving the quality of our soils using diversified microbe populations in order to grow heathy plants. The article below goes a step up the food chain. A strong and healthy immune system is now more critical than ever. The majority of our immune system is generated in our gut. It requires a wide variety of healthy gut bacteria for optimal function our Microbiome. The healthier and more diverse the Microbes in our gut, the stronger our ...immune system and the healthier we are. The quality of our Microbiome is directly dependent on the nutrient density and the Microbiome of the foods we eat, going all the way down the food chain to the microbes in the soil. The healthier the soils and the more diverse the bacteria living in it, the more nutrient-dense and microbially varied our foods, the healthier we are. 12.01.2022 Firstly, you may be wondering why worm compost is so special. Well, the evidence has shown that vermicompost has no equal. In one Queensland study involving six different composts, vermicompost was shown to be 20 times more potent than the second best compost tested. There are several reasons for this superiority. The composting worms digest organic matter with a unique group of highly beneficial bacteria incubated in their own gut and the vermicast is teeming with soil life. 07.01.2022 A small quote from an article I came across recently is as follows "Earthworms are recyclers. They play a crucial role in breaking down organic matter and fertilising the soil, simply through their constant eating and pooping (about 1.5 times their body weight a day). What comes out the other end known as a worm cast is full of nutrients and bacteria that are beneficial for plants. Scientists have measured up to five times the amount of key nutrients in worm casts compared to surrounding soil." 06.01.2022 Those of you who have gardens, particularly vegetable gardens, will be aware that many people have re-ignited a passion for growing plants judging by how difficult it is to procure vegetable seedlings and seeds. Those who have been able to track some down, now might be a good time to ensure your soil around your plants has good levels of the beneficial bacteria and fungi. Over the past 12 months I have posted here a few article extracts outlining the benefits of these vital o...rganisms of the soil food web which feeds your plants. The short video shows one of my brews of microbes, based on worm castings which provide naturally a great diversity of microbes. The process I use, uses a few additives which enable the population of microbes to increase exponentially. The bacteria and fungi spores remain viable while sufficient oxygen is available, a condition that may not be the case in many of the leachates that you see available on sites such as Gumtree. So for the betterment of those plants in your garden, why not come and get a litre or 2 of my microbial brew. At $3 per litre I think it is good value and a small price to pay that gives your garden soil a healthy boost. See more

04.01.2022 When organisms in soil web die they are either consumed or decay, this process preserves nutrients in that location. When nutrients are released through death they are in plant available forms. This process prevents nutrients draining from soil, as happens with synthetic fertilizers.

04.01.2022 Wormpower still has worms available for sale despite a very busy last 6 weeks or so. I have been informed by some customers that many sources of worms are saying they have none available. So if you know someone is chasing some worms please give them my contact details ie 0418980118, I have been shipping them far and wide over the past few weeks. I have recently planted my winter broccoli and caulis and used some liquid vermicast to give them a very moist environment at transp...lanting time. Since the plants have responded well I am surmising that the nutrient rich liquid helps the plants at this tender stage to reduce any 'transplant shock', a statement you may see written in lots of other places. See pics and articles previously in this page for other information about the advantages of this easy to apply product. Please note my liquid is brewed to a formula to ensure consistency, it is not merely whatever runs out the bottom of a worm bed, which can vary from wonderful stuff to toxic for plants, according to some articles I have read. Again if you are interested give me a call, happy to deal in small quantities, ie 2 or litres. See more

03.01.2022 We can now supply quality liquid vermicast in significantly larger quantities (100's of litres). This can be diluted and applied as foliar spray or directly to the soil or compost to improve your soil biota, the unseen key to healthy soils.

01.01.2022 By having great numbers and diversity, soil bacteria are capable of keeping pathogenic bacteria in check. The high diversity of types of beneficial bacteria generally will outcompete the pathogenic bacteria. Good quality worm castings, in both solid and liquid form, are known to contain larger numbers of bacteria than other composted materials, due to their co-existance with worms.
