20.01.2022 TE KORE: WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? The world of light and darkness As the sun rises each morning and sets each evening, the world follows a daily cycle of light (Te Ao) and darkness (Te P). Mori creation stories emphasise this movement from nothingness and darkness to the world of light Te Ao Mrama. It is said that the world itself is created each morning with the rise of the sun.... Te Kore a world beyond In traditional Mori belief there is something beyond the world of everyday experience: we do not live in a closed system where what we see is all there is. This other world or dimension is known as Te Kore, the ‘void’, in most tribal traditions. Cleve Barlow has suggested that Te Kore means chaos a state which has always existed, and which contains ‘unlimited potential for being’. 1 Mori Marsden, a Tai Tokerau elder and Anglican minister, had a similar belief. He said that Te Korekore (a variant of Te Kore) was ‘the realm between non-being and being: that is the realm of potential being.’ Some believe that Te Kore is where the ultimate reality can be found. Others think that it is where Io, the Supreme Being, dwells. The idea of Te Kore is central to notions of mana (status), tapu (sacred and restricted customs) and mauri (life force). https://teara.govt.nz/en

17.01.2022 Villa Bardini with its monumental garden and its panorama of Florence, hosted the Alta Moda fashion show. The tulle looks include an illusion boned corset and ...a flower-embroidered skirt and corset dress. The organza corset dress is entirely embroidered with rooster and pheasant feathers. The corset dress is made of silk red velvet, while the flower brocade dress is embroidered with raffia. Received in concession following the inheritance of antiquarian Stefano Bardini, Fondazione CR Firenze restored the marvellous space filled with statues and artistic and architectonic artifacts, rich with history and beauty. 16.01.2022 I simply cannot resist sharing this outrageous ensemble that is part of the collection of the Kyoto Costume Institute’s ever growing collection. Created in 17...80 in France, this robe de Cour is in the à la Française style. It is made of pink silk taffeta. The robings and underskirt panel are white silk that has been artfully hand painted with ribbons, garlands, and flowers. Those pieces, as well as the bodice and sleeves, are bordered with box pleated silk ribbons, and the center front of the bodice bears a cockade of more ribbons. The extreme hairstyle and headdress are correct to the ultra-fashionable court styles, and more than one fashion illustration of the period shows similar wildly fanciful head gear. The final silhouette is really bizarre, placing the face of the wearer close to the observable center of the body. It is an oddity of proportion rarely reproduced in other cultures. See more

09.01.2022 In 2009 Brilish artist Kirstie Macleod, with seed capital from the British Council, embarked upon a global embroidery project called the Red Dress Project. Betw...een 2009 and 2019 the dress travelled the globe being continuously embroidered by over 120 artisans. The embroiderers include refugees in Palestine, victims of civil war in Kosovo, Rwanda and DR Congo, individuals in South Africa, Kenya, Japan, Paris, Sweden and Peru, upmarket studios in Bombay and Saudi Arabia, artists in Wales and Colombia alongside initiatives to support women in poverty such as Missibaba in Cape Town, South Africa, and FanSina working with Bedouin embroiderers based in the mountains above St Catherine's in Egypt's Sinai. This is both an extraordinary work of collective art and profound and eloquent social commentary. It is also an example of how potent the Attire language is capable of becoming. See more

08.01.2022 Sometimes an article of Attire has no real reason to exist beyond bringing a smile of silliness to our faces. Moving around in these would be problematic to say... the least. Sitting would be out of the question unless the wearer really enjoys pain. That said, this made me literally snort with laughter when I first saw it. I’ve no idea who made them or why, but whoever you are, job well done! See more

03.01.2022 Discover the lavishly illustrated new book 'Dior Hats: From Christian Dior to Stephen Jones', published by Rizzoli NY, and available in a selection of Dior bout...iques, bookstores and online, which explores the fascinating role played by hats throughout the House’s history. Long a quintessential symbol of the sophistication and femininity of haute couture, hats were a key element for Monsieur Dior, who noted, "Personally, I consider that a woman without a hat is not completely dressed". The alluring accessory has been reinvented by his successors ever since, with Stephen Jones assuming the mantle in 1996. The endlessly inventive British milliner is a primary contributor to this sumptuous book which provides an illuminating insight into over seven decades of elegance and a unique form of savoir-faire excellence.
