25.01.2022 I think the thing that lead me to getting involved in the justice system was definitely not having great emotional intelligence. I was taught from a very young age that blokes just cop it on the chin and get on with things. Luke Anderson during our latest community check-in. Luke was articulate and vulnerable in what he shared with us and we were grateful to be able to hear part of his story. Watch the full check-in here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9msc3JvxEJA&t=22s #WorthASecondChance

22.01.2022 "When I imagine the kind of justice system that could be, I think of one that doesn't rely on the state to own the problems that arise between us that we define as crime" Diana Johns, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Melbourne. Full interview available to watch here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWMKvv8kcVo&t=1446s #WorthASecondChance

22.01.2022 "If a kids disengaged at school it's about getting a good understanding of what's going on at home" Ron Zarth support worker at @JesuitSocialSer reflecting on what we need to do differently when it comes to youth justice. Watch the full interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UZvTjf77jA&t=1s

21.01.2022 Just like their adult counterparts Indigenous kids make up the majority of people under 18 in jail. Its a shameful fact made all the more shocking when you consider Indigenous kids only make up 5 per cent of the population. #WorthASecondChance https://www.smh.com.au//we-ve-got-to-stop-locking-up-kids-

21.01.2022 In our latest Community Check-In with JSS support worker Ron Zarth we discussed what it is that young people need in order to thrive and the barriers holding them back from doing so https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UZvTjf77jA #WorthASecondChance

18.01.2022 Today is World Children’s Day and what better time to collectively reflect on our responsibility to the 600 children aged 10-13 who are arrested, charged and imprisoned in Australia every year. These children have often experienced significant abuse and trauma, and have disconnected from school, family and community. They deserve our support, not further punishment. *There is a wealth of evidence from Australia and abroad showing that children under 14 years do not possess t...he neurological maturity to form criminal intent. *78% of children aged 10-13 in detention are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Raising the age would help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups break the cycle of abuse and trauma started by colonisation. *The average age of legal responsibility globally is 14. Australia is trailing behind the rest of the world. The ACT’s Legislative Assembly recently voted to raise the age of legal responsibility from 10 to 14 years. This followed the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to raise the age from 10 to 12. Now it’s time for the remaining states and territories to #RaiseTheAge. Because children belong in playgrounds, not prisons. #WorthASecondChance

14.01.2022 Australias governments have decided not to do the right thing and put an end to the incarceration of 10-13 year old children. We will not stop talking about this injustice until young people are given the second chance they deserve. Now is the time to make our voices even louder! Send a letter to your local MPs https://bit.ly/2CHTRpD because prison is no place for a child. #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance

13.01.2022 Today is World Children’s Day, and what better time to reflect on our responsibility to the 600 children aged 10-13 who are arrested, charged and, imprisoned in Australia every year. These children have often experienced significant abuse and trauma, and have disconnected from school, family and, community. They deserve our support, not further punishment. Send a letter to your local MPs asking them to #RaiseTheAge through our easy to use form bit.ly/raisetheagewasc It takes... one minute and all you need to do is enter your contact details. Prisons traumatise children and increase their chances of getting into more trouble, not less. Medical experts maintain that children under 14 years do not possess the neurological maturity to form criminal intent. By having our age of legal responsibility set at 10 we are in breach of human rights standards and trailing behind the rest of the world where the average age globally is 14. The ACT’s Legislative Assembly recently voted to raise the age of legal responsibility from 10 to 14 years. Now it’s time for the remaining states and territories to do the same and #RaiseTheAge. Because children belong in playgrounds, not prisons.

13.01.2022 "None of us exist in a purely law abiding way. Crime and criminality is a continuum." Dr Diana Johns during our Community Check-In. Watch the full interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWMKvv8kcVo&t=1444s

13.01.2022 'In 2019, more than 113,000 students across Australia were removed from government schools, either for a set period or permanently representing 4.3% of all government school enrolments.' https://www.childmags.com.au/why-are-the-rules-around-expu/

11.01.2022 Calling all educators! Have you ever struggled to engage a student in education? You are not alone. 10.01.2022 "Raising the age doesn't mean that you don't hold children accountable. What it recognises though is that there is a way that children can be held accountable by learning from their actions in a way that they understand." Elle Jackson Manager of Justice Programs with Jesuit Social Services in the NT makes some very relevant points during our check-in conversation earlier in the year. Watch the full video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REcmH7Dl81Y&feature=youtu.be #WorthASecondChance

09.01.2022 Post 'In My Blood It Runs' Q&A! Have you watched the film yet?

09.01.2022 Some powerful quotes shared by young people with experience living in out of home care. These quotes were collected during a Kitchen Table Conversation that we hosted in collaboration with @creatfnd. They are an important reminder that the narrative the media creates around young people has a very real impact on them. We need to see more positive stories of young people in the media, because they cannot be they cannot see. And because young people are #WorthASecondChance.

08.01.2022 Children who come in contact with the criminal legal system are more likely to die an early death, to reoffend and to stay in the criminal legal system - including as adults." These kids are #WorthASecondChance https://bit.ly/3eSHgx1

08.01.2022 This is what a 10 year old looks like. Campaign Manager Jessica Sanders has shared an image of herself at 10 to show all members of parliament that 10 is too young to be in jail. Make sure to show them yourself ahead of the Attorneys-General meeting Monday. #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance

08.01.2022 The #RaiseTheAge campaign is not over! You voice is powerful and when we join forces to use our voices collectively we can make change happen. Let's keep this issue at the fore front of our politicians minds. Send a letter to your MP's today. http://www.worthasecondchance.com.au/take-ac/raise-the-age/

05.01.2022 Ron is a support worker at Jesuit Social Services who has been an important role model to young men over the years. "They've had very few positive male role models in their life teaching them how to be good young men." Watch Ron's full interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UZvTjf77jA&t=1s

05.01.2022 Australia is behind the rest of the world and ignoring the advice of medical experts. 10 year olds should be in classrooms, not cold prison cells. We need to call on our Government to #RaiseTheAge. Send our pre-written letter to your local MP's here - https://buff.ly/2UWxToG it will only take 2 minutes! #WorthASecondChance

04.01.2022 "I've found that young people respond really really well to leadership... When you put them in a position of leadership where they can start to control other people and elements in their lives the control over themselves starts to come as well". Will Smith is the 2020 recipient of young Tasmanian of the year, he founded JCP Empowering Youth a school and community youth leadership program and also works as a Police Officer with the Tasmanian Police. Watch our inspiring Community Check-In with Will here - https://buff.ly/35IlRFN

04.01.2022 Why do we need to #RaiseTheAge? Because locking up children only increases their likelihood of reoffending. Over 80 per cent of children first sentenced between the ages of 10-12 go on to reoffend. Send a letter to your MP's demanding they #RaiseTheAge https://buff.ly/2UWxToG

04.01.2022 "So often the system is deficit-based and focusing on what a child doesn't do well instead of focusing on harnessing their strengths." Elle Jackson, Manager of Manager of Justice Programs in the NT #WorthASecondChance Full interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REcmH7Dl81Y&t=1s

03.01.2022 An incredibly moving speech. Please take the time to listen the words of this young man who was at one stage one of Tasmanias most recidivists youth offenders. "Do not forget that you matter and that you do have value. When you believe that you will provide value to other people."

02.01.2022 Tune in if you can!

01.01.2022 Ron Zarth, support worker at JSS has found that it's near impossible to find young men aged 21-25 safe and affordable accommodation after exiting prison resulting in a high recidivism rate. Young people need a place to call home in order to get their lives back on track. Launch Housing #WorthASecondChance

01.01.2022 Raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 would make a difference for generations of Aboriginal kids and stop the mass incarceration of Aboriginal people" https://www.news.com.au//news-story/471dba7db9f5a23e4dd008

01.01.2022 Kerry White has been a principal for 37 years and he's never suspended or expelled a student. The reason he has is simple: it only makes matters worse. "We keep them in-house because the key issue is having a sense of belonging," Mr White said. Did you catch this amazing segment on ABC Sunday evening? Figures show state schools around the country are suspending and expelling students at higher rates than ever. Research suggests these methods do not work and make behaviour worse. #WorthASecondChance https://www.abc.net.au//school-suspensions-expul/12447104.
