14.01.2022 'Our Clan', our fabulous rainbow plaid, is off the loom, wet finished, and ready for sale! Priced at $80 per half metre. It is a 16/2 thread cotton-linen blend, and would make a wonderful summer weight cowl, scarf, or babywrap. The brilliant red would also lends itself well to Christmas tea towels! Price includes conversion to item of your choice (please add $20 for a ring sling conversion).

07.01.2022 I love to spin, as you know, and I've been meaning for some time to spin and knit myself some socks. But no-one wants socks that felt or fall apart... I was luck enough to get my hands on some 100% Australian wool top suitable for spinning socks. This blend is approximately 40% Perindale, 40% Downs types or Merino x Downs, and 20% Merino x Corridale or Finn x Corridale. The question remained, however, of how to spin it. Worsted? Woolen? Can you get away with a chained 3 ply? ...Or do you need 4ply? Ideally, you want something hard wearing, that won't felt, doesn't feel like wire, and has enough recoil for the rib to hold the socks up. Using a grand sample size of one, I've done (some of) the science for you! The knitted samples below are both spun with a high twist and chain plied, and knitted using 2mm needles. The one on the left is spun from the fold (which should give a woollen style springier yarn), the one on the right is spun with the fibres aligned (giving a smoother worsted style yarn). From top to bottom, the samples test a standard rib, stocking stitch, and then rib through the back of the stitch. I've measured the width of each sample in the middle of each stitch. I then stretched the rib overnight, released it, and remeasured. Finally, I threw them in the washing machine to see how much they felted. Results can be found in this google sheet! https://docs.google.com//191Np2rF8CRkKPi0n6nLMAdrAx2/edit My conclusion? The blend holds up really well, there was minimal felting (not that I recommend machine washing your handspun socks!). Surprisingly, the backloop rib was actually less able to regain its shape than a straight 1x1 rib, although it resulted in a firmer rib. For myself, I will revert to 1x1 rib for the future. The woollen from the fold spin results in a cushier feel, while the worsted spin is very smooth. I think either would be a good choice depending on the application, e.g. whether you are planning on wearing your socks with shoes or boots. Spinning by Kerensa, knitted samples by Nadia. There will be five bright and fabulous science inspired colourways on this sock fibre released over the next few minutes. And stay tuned for the next instalment of sock science, where I will test 3ply versus 4ply (probably in a month), and some spins of different thickness and twist. Now, I'll get back to spinning some wefts, they are so much simpler
