22.01.2022 Starting this Tuesday night, we'll all need to either sign in manually to UWA or use the smartphone app. I recommend everyone download the app to their smartphone. I'm not sure where the entry will be, but I assume that there will only be one. I'm planning on the main entry from the street! Get there early as this may cause delays.

22.01.2022 We’re hopping into the pool today as we look back at Olympic Water Polo Player Andrew Kerr who graduated UNSW with a B. Building (Building Construction). Affec...tionately known as Acre for his sheer size and play on words for his name, Andrew represented Australia at 4 Olympic Games from 1976-1988 and is one of just two (the other being Peter Montgomery) who have been a part of 4 Australian Olympic water polo teams. Back on the shores of NSW, Andrew led his home club Cronulla-Sutherland to 5 Australian Club Championships, 4 National Titles and 13 Water Polo NSW 1st grade premierships and in 2009 was inducted into the Water Polo Australia Hall of Fame. 16.01.2022 Pools will be open and there are restrictions still but it looks like we could be good to go on 6th June. "Are swimming pools open? Venues that have swimming pools are subject to the same capacity requirements as other venues.... Swimming pools are permitted to accommodate up to 100 persons in each undivided space, and up to 300 patrons per venue, provided there is at least 2 square metres of floor space per patron. Change rooms and shower facilities can also open. Venues with multiple pools can open multiple indoor and outdoor pools, as long as the total number of patrons does not exceed 100 in any undivided space, and does not exceed 300 across the venue. Patrons include spectators and swimmers. Swimming classes can resume. This measure also applies to swimming pools at hotels and caravan parks." https://www.wa.gov.au//phase-3-easing-of-restrictions-freq

11.01.2022 Japanese Infectious Disease Expert ‘Very Pessimistic’ About chances for 2021 Olympics A spokesman for the Japanese government on Wednesday said the Internationa...l Olympic Committee and local organizers are going ahead as planned with the Tokyo Olympics despite the threat of the spreading coronavirus. A Japanese professor of infectious disease says he is very pessimistic the postponed Tokyo Olympics can open in 15 months. To be honest with you, I don’t think the Olympics is likely to be held next year, Kentaro Iwata, a professor of infectious disease at Kobe University, said Monday speaking in English on a teleconference. Holding the Olympics needs two conditions; one, controlling COVID-19 in Japan, and controlling COVID-19 everywhere. Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo organizing committee, expressed his own reservations 10 days ago. Since then, the organizing committee and the International Olympic Committee have said there is no Plan B other than working for the Olympics to open on July 23, 2021. I am very pessimistic about holding the Olympic Games next summer unless you hold the Olympic Games in a totally different structure such as no audience, or a very limited participation, Iwata said, speaking at a forum arranged by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo. The Tokyo Olympics will open next year in the same time slot scheduled for this year’s games. You have to invite so many athletes from many, many places, which is not very compatible with this COVID-19 infection that is causing a pandemic. Japan might be able to control this disease by next summer. And I wish we could. But I don’t think that will happen everywhere on earth. Japan was spared during the initial stage of the coronavirus outbreak. But cases are now spiking, particularly in Tokyo and other large cities. As of Monday, there were about 12,000 detected infections in Japan and about 250 deaths. Devi Sridhar, professor of Global Health at the University of Edinburgh, told the BBC that the Olympics may hinge on finding a vaccine. Japan is officially spending $12.6 billion or organize the Olympics, although a government audit board put the figure at twice that. All but $5.6 billion is taxpayer money. Local estimates say the postponement will cost between $2 billion and $6 billion with Japanese governments picking up almost all the bills.BY STEPHEN WADE

08.01.2022 We lost a great champion in Tibor Benedek, three-time Olympic gold medallist for Hungary. Such a nice man who fought from behind so often to achieve what he gai...ned. Sadly, the last battle proved too huge a hurdle to overcome. Luckily, I witnessed every match of his three Olympic titles and world championship and had the honour to interview him for flash quotes when he was national coach. I attach the story by good friend Gergely Gsurka who sadly lost his father at the same time which is very moving and exacting. "It is a little over twenty years since Tibor Benedek wrote a book. "The elephant will not have a curse," the title said. At that time, he was spending his prohibition, completely withdrawing from the world, turning inward, in terrible bitterness this is what he published in writing. It was an amazing creation, anyway, I never would have thought he could weave sentences so lavishly, because he was famous for something else. Most of all, he fought, always, to the end, without compromise and fear. He fought, he wanted, more than anyone, because he might not have blessed the creator with an unearthly spherical sense, two feet tall, but he was the type who, when he got into something, always wanted to get the most out of it. From his body, from water polo, from a workout, from a shot, from a horse, from a practice match, from a cup match, from a world competition, from a national team, from his club team. From a book. From a poker game. What Bar. At the age of ten, a crazy will to win glowed in his eyes, even though at the time we were just sitting around one of the tables at the Siófok theater resort to play poker on a ten-pillar basis. Sometimes he cut the card if he lost. Two and a half decades later, at the Beijing Olympics, on his way to obtaining his third immortal five-ring gold medal, he threw the console in his anger at the Olympic Village’s restroom when he was just short of a video game. After all, for him, victory alone existed as the only acceptable outcome. And in the intermediate quarter of a century in the vast majority of cases, including the last time in Beijing: he won. He has won everything that can be won in this sport. Water polo is a way of life, that is, water polo is a way of life that was the first sentence of that particular book. Then he went on to say that he believed in this. He built everything on it, it was driven, but with an elemental force that I don't think this sport has seen before. Because anyone who had only as many talents as a starting point had almost always dropped out, no later than halfway through the road, two-thirds. However, thanks to his insane work ethic and unbreakable iron will, not only did he go all the way, but he was much taller than many of his age and career companions, who were already artistic in handling the ball and had better talents. Quite precisely: up to all the peaks where a Hungarian T-shirt can get up. Although in 1999, it seemed that this long-awaited career might even break. At the time, he was disappointed in everything and everyone in the world, that water polo was truly a way of life. Then the book never reached the general public because the terrible mental crash was followed by a unique upheaval at the cost of tremendous effort and even greater spiritual struggles, but he was finally able to move to the top of the Olympic podium in Sydney, scoring four goals in the final, bracketed at once. which he explained in the book. And, of course, it seemed then, even after that: the elephant wouldn’t actually be cursed. In comparison, I’m sitting here in front of a screen, now I’m trying to dress up the sentences to express the awful spiritual shock that the loss of a friend of such a hero and childhood means. I was there for every big win, we could be overwhelmed with exclamation points. Now you only the question marks. Why couldn't a water polo player whose body and muscles radiate the same unbridled force that made his will unbroken, who even after his career was able to swim miles a week to keep himself in perfect condition, not be able to reach his 48th birthday ?! My last pool memory is related to the 2017 Masters World Championships: in the fourth quarter of the finals against the Russians, in an eight-goal lead, the opponent turned around with a roughly four-meter lead. Tibor followed, starting from the middle of the other half. And he dismantled it in the end. At the age of forty-five, at a Masters World Cup, in a winning match. That was him. Strength and the will to win worked tirelessly in him. Today, we suspect others worked inside. In 2017, even as an invisible enemy, hidden in the deep. For a year, however, the terrible disease revealed itself. Others might pour out his soul at such times, complaining about why he is, look at me now, as I deserved it. However, Tibor remained who he was, even in this new, promising battle: a warrior with a diamond-hard face. And while we've seen the growing incidence of admiringly wide-ranging back and shoulder muscles admired by adolescent players fading - he never sighed, never, he shared with anyone in public that he died with such easy words in sports coverage -compared to matches classified as fighting, this time he fights a real one whose stakes are higher than anything he has ever faced in pool and pool shore. When I asked a reputable medical professor well known in T-shirts in the fall of 2019 what he knows about Tibi, he replied: now he’s a little scared, too. A year earlier, he even thought he had a better than fifty percent chance of recovering. At the time, I thought that was good news - because Tibin usually has one percent enough to go into battle for victory. I thought if someone, he, one of the greatest fighters, might be able to triumph in this battle as well. However, when I heard that he was a little scared Well, then I knew there was something wrong. Precisely because, in addition to his work ethic and his will to iron, he was first and foremost characterized by the fact that he was never afraid of anything. There was no stakes that could have cracked. Outwardly, it really seemed like all that hadn't changed. The murderous disease carved out of his body but did not break it, not a hairline crack in his soul. Even with the adult team of UVSE puppies, he accumulated miracles even this winter, and in addition to full-time coaching, he led the reform of Hungarian youth training with steam power for almost a year. He was willing to exchange a few words only with his closest champions that he would otherwise tartja May be doing well, but inside he would be consumed. Until early May, the announcement was received that he was retiring - he would no longer take a role in water polo. When, on the pretext of this, I wrote Will there be more with a soul torn from pain? I first received an SMS from my beloved parents, Miklós and Évika, that they made it easy and that they trust and hope. Two days later, Tibor also sent a message. "Thank you very much for writing Gerg, very beautiful!" For thirty years at a time like this, I replied to my t-shirt friends one by one that it is not hard to write good things about the good. Now I had to add, Another time. It was the hardest thing about you since our first Today's interview. Tibi wrote back, I understand. Not an obituary yet :) So, with a smile in the end. And this is when hope naively rises in man. If someone wants to joke, there must still be strength, endurance, perseverance, which is multiplied tenfold, a hundredfold, no matter how many times when it comes to Tibet Benedek Then This is now an obituary. He was given a little over a month, forty-eight years in less than a week. Unjustly few. No, I can't write - following the rules of the obituaries, but there should be some nice and positive message in it - that his career as a first round captain led the team to the world title, and then he showed how to train really good water polo players, ie we got so much from him that Because even if it is, it is terrible to know that we have received much more from him than from his loving spouse and children. At dawn today, a wonderful family lost its strongest member. In this monstrous world, the harmony in which they lived their fabulously beautiful lives with Panni, Mór, Barka and, of course, their loving parents was quite exceptional, fascinating and captivating. What kind of curse is it that such a fairy tale cannot continue ?! We raise our eyes to the sky, asking: why? Why him? Then we look at the ground and ask: yet, how could this have just happened to him? It is said that this killer is most often activated by stress. And unfortunately we saw Tibor lived under extreme stress for four years of his captaincy to prove he could reach the top as he did when he did his thing in the water - but after the first two bright years, the bitter disappointments of the second two probably left their mark. organization. Single goal in Kazan, failed penalty duel in Rio So much for it? Or would the poison have started its mine work as early as 1999? When you still thought the elephant wouldn't curse? Questions without answer. A family without a father. A sport without class. A country without heros. The warrior is gone. We look after him to see if he turns around, comes and strikes back, for he has perfected the science of victory but no, no and no the terrible, deep black darkness of mourning closes behind him. And nothing will be the same as it used to be."

04.01.2022 Not directly Masters related, but how many people would be playing Masters Polo if not for these some of these issues at some in their Polo career. I think it incumbent upon coaches and people of influence in kids sport generally, but more importantly Polo. We'll soon be back in the pool, let's take this opportunity to change the direction of what we do, of how we do it, how we affect others and especially young people in our sport... that includes parents! Time to make a difference in our sport, time to change the way we do things and how young people are developed in the sport but generally. Some of the worlds best coaches aren't about skills or tactics, they're about managing people so those people want to be the best they can be. Whether that be the best athlete or the best people.
