25.01.2022 A piece from econsultancy.com that I really enjoyed reading. It's a very sensible look at some 'old' ways of writing that are past their 'use by' dates...

25.01.2022 Start your 2016 the 'write way' ! We've all just experienced the season of giving, so it follows that we should also engage in some thanking. Write a thank you note today. Make sure it's sincere and you'll brighten someone's day :)

18.01.2022 People of Luzern #2 We stumbled across a dusty antique map shop called 'Alte Stiche' in the backstreets of Luzern. As collectors of old maps mostly of places we've lived we looked around the cluttered shop, on the off-chance that we’d find one of Saudi Arabia. Nothing doing. But we had the most stimulating conversation with Jurgen, the proprietor. In 1961, just a few weeks after the Berlin Wall was erected, Jurgen left his sister and parents and successfully crossed from ...GDR into the American quarter of West Berlin. He described the ferocious dogs, the threat of machine gunfire and guards patrolling the border on mopeds. Jurgen’s determined expression was captivating as he recounted his memories of the barbed wire, how hard his heart pumped as he scrambled underneath in the dark of night, and how he went straight to the Americans and told them everything he knew about the numbers of Russian tanks, weapons and resources he’d seen in the East. We listened intently for 30 minutes but could have spent hours in his company... Love the Google clip today. Bits of the dismantled wall in different countries.

02.01.2022 Proofreading is a very different exercise to merely reading your written words, as this blog from Grammarly explains. Personally, I experience a frisson of anticipation when asked to proofread a piece of work. It's so satisfying to approach the words without emotion and review them for the sum of their parts, before assessing whether the whole piece does what it's supposed to do. If proofreading is something you want to delegate to others, then you know where we are :)
