20.01.2022 I recently caught up with an engineering friend of mine and asked him what he was working on these days. He said he was focusing on the aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a controlled environment. I was impressed until, upon further enquiry, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water under his wife’s supervision. I appreciated his humour, but it struck me that we often use elaborate or flamboyant language to sound impressive instead of a...dopting plain, simple language to convey a message clearly. At the same time, I admired my friend’s creative and engaging vocabulary. The ultimate objective is to get the balance right by communicating in a simple, uncomplicated, yet professional manner. 20.01.2022 A well presented resume can get your 'foot in the door' of your next potential employer. However, many resumes focus on an individual's qualifications and experience, and fail to canvass their vital skills and personal attributes. To ensure your resume 'ticks all the boxes' and is presented professionally, contact Write Hand Man on 0418 621 858 or by email: [email protected]

18.01.2022 A common grammatical error is to refer to a brand or entity as 'they'. However, a particular business or organisation is not plural. Therefore, the business is not 'they', it's 'it'. So, what's the problem with the following sentence? "To keep up with their changing customer base, Global Travel re-branded in 2019". In English, we don't identify a brand or entity as 'he' or 'she', so 'they' seems to make more sense. But it's just not accurate. A brand or entity is 'it'.... So, let's phrase that sentence correctly: "To keep up with its changing customer base, Global Travel re-branded in 2019". It might sound a little strange at first, but once you start correctly referring to a brand or entity as 'it', the phrasing will sound much more natural than 'they'. To ensure that your next important letter, report or submission is grammatically correct and has real impact, contact Write Hand Man.

17.01.2022 Between vs Among It is often taught that 'between' is used for two items and 'among' for three or more. However, this is not strictly correct. The more accurate difference is this: 'Between' is used to refer to two or more things that are distinct, individual items. "Among' is used when the items are part of a group, or are not specifically named. The following examples illustrate the point:... The negotiations between France, Germany and Italy are progressing well. The negotiations among the countries of Europe are progressing well. I will choose between the red hat, the blue hat and the black hat. I will choose among all the hats. See more

09.01.2022 Who vs that Two words that are often used incorrectly are the words 'who' and 'that'. These two words can be used when describing someone or something through a phrase such as, 'Jack is a tradesman who likes riding motor bikes'. When you're describing a person, be sure to use 'who'. When you're describing an object, use 'that'. For example, 'Jane's computer is the one that is always slow'. It's pretty straight forward, but something that is overlooked frequently.
