25.01.2022 I recently caught up with an engineering friend of mine and asked him what he was working on these days. He said he was focusing on the aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a controlled environment. I was impressed until, upon further enquiry, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water under his wife’s supervision. I appreciated his humour, but it struck me that we often use elaborate or flamboyant language to sound impressive instead of a...dopting plain, simple language to convey a message clearly. At the same time, I admired my friend’s creative and engaging vocabulary. The ultimate objective is to get the balance right by communicating in a simple, uncomplicated, yet professional manner. 18.01.2022 One of my pet peeves is the wrong use of 'effect' and 'affect'. Most people confuse them when talking about something changing something else, not realising that 'effect' is the noun and 'affect' is the verb. When you're talking about the change itself - the noun - you should use 'effect'. For example: That documentary had a great effect on me. When you're talking about the act of changing - the verb - you should use 'affect'. For example: That movie affected me greatly.... To make sure your next important document has the right effect on your audience and does not affect your reputation adversely, contact Write Hand Man at www.writehandman.net.au for high quality, low cost editing and proof reading.

13.01.2022 A well presented resume can get your 'foot in the door' of your next potential employer. However, many resumes focus on an individual's qualifications and experience, and fail to canvass their vital skills and personal attributes. To ensure your resume 'ticks all the boxes' and is presented professionally, contact Write Hand Man on 0418 621 858 or by email: [email protected]

12.01.2022 A common grammatical error is to refer to a brand or entity as 'they'. However, a particular business or organisation is not plural. Therefore, the business is not 'they', it's 'it'. So, what's the problem with the following sentence? "To keep up with their changing customer base, Global Travel re-branded in 2019". In English, we don't identify a brand or entity as 'he' or 'she', so 'they' seems to make more sense. But it's just not accurate. A brand or entity is 'it'.... So, let's phrase that sentence correctly: "To keep up with its changing customer base, Global Travel re-branded in 2019". It might sound a little strange at first, but once you start correctly referring to a brand or entity as 'it', the phrasing will sound much more natural than 'they'. To ensure that your next important letter, report or submission is grammatically correct and has real impact, contact Write Hand Man.

11.01.2022 I'm often surprised how frequently the words 'your' and 'you're' are misused. The difference between the two words is that one refers to owning something (your), whereas the other is actually being something (you're): Your shoes are very fashionable. You're going to look very fashionable in those shoes.... 'Your' is possessive and 'you're' is an abbreviation of 'you are'. Put simply, If you can't replace 'you're' with 'you are' in the same sentence, then you should be using 'your'. Now you're up-to-date with your understanding of these two words.

10.01.2022 I have edited many personal resumes and most tend to focus on the individual's qualifications and experience. However, it is important to recognise that employers are interested primarily in a potential employee's skills set - the skills that an employee will bring to the employer's business or organisation. It is critical that job seekers know their key strengths and skills, and highlight these at the beginning of their resume. For example, those skills could be excellent analytical, problem solving, communication, organisational, IT or collaborative skills.
