22.01.2022 Writing a novel or screenplay is an act of discovery. It is through the writing that you discover what you truly want to say. "The problem is not to start writing, but to keep writing and renew inspiration. We rarely know where we are going; Writing is a discovery." Robert McKee

21.01.2022 I started to think about the practices of highly productive writers. What are the personality traits and habits that help people crank out the pages?

21.01.2022 Writing advice and lessons collected from 27 New York Times best selling authors:

21.01.2022 We always recommend to writers doing our courses that they have the attitude of learners rather than performers. That is how you get the best results. Robert Fritz in his book Creating, writes "A performer first discovers his/her natural talents and abilities, then pursues activities designed to express these talents. The intent is to find a comfortable and secure niche in life. The emphasis is on performance. Always do well, never do poorly. For some it is more extreme: Be perfect. Learners develop an ability to grow beyond their present abilities. Entry-level competence is not an issue for them. Some learners have actually started with a natural ability that is less than average.

19.01.2022 We can't always stop the waves that enter our lives, but we can learn how to deal with them better. Got rejected from a writing competition? Take this as a learning opportunity you put yourself out there and you tried. So just try, try again. That's certainly something worth celebrating Follow us on Instagram for more! https://buff.ly/2TZPTiA

18.01.2022 The Kookaburra By C.J. Dennis (1935) I am cursed with a cackle whenever I tackle A soulful and lilting refrain; But a frivolous snicker, like some fool in liquor,... Is not what I seek to attain. For I have, on the whole, quite a musical soul Which I seek to express as I may. And it’s simply absurd to suppose that a bird, Such as I, makes a laugh of his lay. In early October I’m specially sober And loaded with household affairs; And myself and my wife lead no trivial life That inclines us to laugh at our cares, So, if you should suppose that our song is jocose, You’re entitled of course, to your views, But to us, her and me, it’s a sweet symphony And inspired by our mutual muse. When I soulfully sing in the bourgeoning spring With true poetry bursting my heart, It is hard if I seem to express in my theme Some coarse phase of the comical art. And yet, what’s the good? Since I’m misunderstood I’m content to submit to the wrong. And tho’ Ock, ock, oo, hoo may seem funny to you, ’Tis to me a delectable song. Follow us on Instagram for more! https://buff.ly/2TZPTiA

18.01.2022 Writing requires a daily act of faith. Often enough, our faith beforehand in an uncertifiable result is the only thing that makes the result come true. William James Successful writers are not the ones who write the best sentences. They are the ones who keep writing. They are the ones who discover what is most important and strangest and most pleasurable in themselves, and keep believing in the value of their work, despite the difficulties. Bonnie Friedman

17.01.2022 "I’d never taken a single writing class (except what was needed for school) and I was clueless on the whole process of writing and publishing books. So I made the ultimate rookie mistake. I whipped out a book in five months and thought I’d written a bestseller."

15.01.2022 Writers are people who write. It is up to you to make the commitment to yourself and your story. "I don't think that talent or gift, if such things exist, has anything to do with what the final receipts will be. My notion is that anyone who speaks, by reason of that speech, has prospects of achieving important imaginative writing. I see the notion of talent as quite irrelevant. I see instead old-fashioned notions of perseverance, application and industry...It comes down in every instance to this dualism between what one wants and what one may be afraid to have." Gordon Lish

13.01.2022 One of the most useful connections I’ve found is the link between Isaac Newton’s 3 laws of motion and writing. If you keep these laws in mind throughout your journey as a writer, you’ll start to find ways you can apply them to improve your abilities.

08.01.2022 Anthony Hopkins, actor and now writer, composer and artist discusses his artistic processes and beliefs: "I act as if everything is possible. I act as if I believe. Even if sometimes, you know, you always have doubts, but when the doubts come, just push through and believe that it’s going to work. Act as if it is impossible to fail.

08.01.2022 Writing a novel or screenplay is a four part process planning, writing, re-writing and editing. One of the biggest mistakes a writer can make when just starting out is to mix up the separate elements of the process. Writing a first draft is an act of discovery where you need to learn to mine your imagination. You can refine what comes out later. As Michelangelo said: "The angel was always in the marble." When you are writing a first draft you are just creating the marble. Just get something down so you have something to re-write and edit later.

07.01.2022 Interview with Hollywood screenwriter Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, A Star is Born, Dune) discussing his writing practice, and how he gets in the head of his characters:

06.01.2022 From the second that you're in this world, They tell you what is "fair", The questions you're allowed to ask And the ones you wouldn't dare, Placed on the path they've paved for you,... Life pushes you along, But beyond your pathway's edges, Is where living really starts, A land of risks and danger, And a land of broken hearts, They'll tell you you should fear this land, That there's no good there at all, As they live their lives as they've been taught, Behind expectation's wall, But the best people you will ever meet, Have wandered off their track, Found themselves along the way, And have no need to wander back, So forget about life's road map, Follow your heart at any cost, For you'll never truly find yourself, If you're too scared to get lost. 03.01.2022 This image is from the second class of our Four Week Unlocking Creativity Course held at our Bronte Studio where the focus is on learning tools and techniques to draw readers into your fictional world and keep them there. One of the keys to making this happen is to connect your reader with the emotions your character is feeling in a scene. You can’t just tell the reader how to feel, you have to show the emotion on the pageusing bricks of significant detail. Amazing how everyo...ne’s writing jumps to another level when they learn tools and techniques that help them to do this. Let action speak for itself, without telling readers how to respond, what to feel, how to judge. Let images convey meaning. If action is portrayed truly and precisely, using only its essential elements, then readers, without being told how, will respond emotionally as the writer intended.
