16.01.2022 The book is truly interesting even as a good read, although I know it’s not entirely intended as such - but given you have so much knowledge and you set the scenes so well, it makes for quite a detailed insight and an intriguing journey into this particular time and also into Japan. Really enjoying it! Denise

15.01.2022 A letter from the source of the diary - who also provided some of the original translations Dear Victoria, I just received you book on Tamura Yoshikazu. Congratulations for the book! It is a beautifully produced book. I am looking forward to reading it. ... When I looked back, an email to AJRP ( Australia Japan Research Project) started all this and I am very glad that you put your time and energy to write a PhD thesis and a book on the diary. The diary was found in a drawer after the owner’s and his wife’s deaths, and the family almost chucked it away. Then the neighbour heard about it and got in touch with Steve and I. Just imagine what if it had been chucked away in a bin. How did the Tamura family react? I am sure they are really happy about it. Bryant Allen, retired geographer who knew about the original diary, told me about your book only a few days ago. Gokurosama for your efforts and I hope the book will be read by many people for the years to come. It must be a great Christmas present for you. Wish you and your family nice Christmas and a happy new year. 15.01.2022 Interesting! Having lived through the research & writing of this book for the last seven years I read it for the first time and finished today. What an amazing and emotional journey. As I was approaching the end I found and bought Action Front the story of my fathers regiment (2/2 field regiment, 6th Division) who fought in the same theatre of war in Wewak PNG. Victoria Eaves-Young’s book gives an interesting insight into the Japanese perspective of the Pacific War that is... very relevant even in today’s conflicts. I was extremely moved - even having been brought up by a father who had a very strong military background and a very uncompromising, yet understandable, view of not only Japanese soldiers but the Japanese race as a whole. I must say - I was moved and it elucidates in amazing detail the absolute futility of war and the fragility of those who are forced to fight them. My father was as forced as was Tamura - sad See more
