24.01.2022 CQUniversity was proud to support the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) enthusiasts at the recent Robocup Junior competition in Mackay (16 September). As part of the Whitsunday Festival of STEM, the competition challenged primary and secondary students in Years 5-12 to utilise their skills in construction, programming and problem solving to complete a series of rescue challenges, robot soccer and robot dancing. CQUniversity was one of ...four trophy sponsors with staff and engineering lecturers volunteer judges for the event. Whitsunday STEM Challenge secretary, CQUniversity Mackay Campus Coordinator Leanne Williams said the event was successful in engaging children from the Mackay and Bowen region. By exposing school-aged kids to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore its concepts, they will hopefully develop a passion for it and pursue a job in a related field. CQUni has always worked hard to support regional STEM opportunities for young people, she said. Surprise visitor, Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles watched over 50 students compete at this year’s event with Mirani State High School taking out the top spot in the Junior Rescue challenge and Mercy College Mackay the winners in the dance and soccer. These teams have the possibility of progressing to the State and National Championship level competitions. 12.01.2022 As a committee we decided to proceed with a hot laps version of the Human Powered Vehicle race. The race date will be moved closer to the term 3/4 holidays. The format will be 30min hot laps with 20min cleans before new riders start their hot laps. This will make for an exciting set of mini competitions culminating in a team score. We expect to have 10 hot laps slots per team or 8 hrs of racing in this format. The idea is to keep the race to 1 day and really minimise the risk of Covid 19 while holding a local event for our teams. More will follow on the event and timing once we renegotiate a few things.
