13.01.2022 This is the DEATH MASK of a young woman who drowned in the River Seine in the 1880's. As was customary in those days, her corpse was put on display in the Paris... mortuary, in the hope that someone might recognize her and claim her body. The pathologist on duty became entranced by the girl with the enigmatic half-smile, and so he commissioned a plaster cast made of her face. This mask was replicated many times over. She became known as "L'Inconnue de la Seine, or The Unknown Woman of the Seine. In 1955, a toy maker named Asmund Laerdal created what we now know as the CPR doll. Asmund wanted his mannequin to have a natural appearance. Remembering a mask on the wall of his grandparents' house many years earlier, he decided that the L'Inconnue de la Seine would become the face of Resusci Anne. So you see, this anonymous woman who drowned in the 19th century is responsible for saving many, many lives the world over. It is said that she has the most kissed face of all time. I hope you enjoyed this little #histmed tale! Credit: The Chirurgeon's Apprentice

08.01.2022 I am pleased to announce our very own stars who participated in one of the UPSTREAM (Undergraduate Paramedicine Student Research Engagement Academy’ teams has won the undergraduate research awards at the Australasian College of Paramedicine International Conference last week. Shayna King presented the research on behalf of Alysha Le, Caitlin Burrows and Christina Margaret who were supervised by Liz Thyer, Colin Stack and Paul Simpson Their theme was infection control and a...fter various discussion, research and investigation over the past three years, they determined the prevalence of MRSA in a fleet of non-emergency ambulances This is the 5th consecutive year that WSU students from UPSTREAM have won this award at the ACPIC, further confirming our stance as the leading program during undergraduate study. An extra congratulations to UPSTREAM for engaging students and conducting research continuously for the greater good of evidence-based practice. The private service who kindly agreed to collaborate with WSU and give access to their non-emergency fleet and will remain anonymous. Another appreciation to the WSU School of Health Science Faculty for their in-kind support for the study, providing resources and material for data collection and sample culturing. The students of the winning team would like to add that participating in UPSTREAM is completely worthwhile, interesting and engaging. It is beneficial in so many ways and contributing to the realm of improving paramedic practice should be on everyone’s future career agenda. For the first years that are able to begin their UPSTREAM journey, we highly recommend collaborating with the tutors and your fellow peers to form your own research! Alternatively, if you think you have a research idea and it is past the intake date, Paul and Liz are always approachable for expressions of interest to partner and create opportunities. Take every opportunity Paramedicine has to offer because it will take you so much further!

03.01.2022 Are you a Western Sydney University Paramedicine Student doing an emergency ambulance placement in 2020? You are invited to participate in a research study being conducted by students Virginia Glover, Isabella Pacifici, Georgia Sirec and Alexandra West. This project is supervised by a number of WSU academics. The research aims to compare how undergraduate paramedicine students perform specific aspects of scene and patient management before and after undertaking work- integra...ted learning in an emergency ambulance setting. Participants will do two separate 20-minute simulated patient scenarios during which they will be asked several questions pertaining to the situation, simulated patient and the scenario. The simulations will take place before and after an emergency ambulance placement. The findings of this research may help to better understand how work-integrated learning influences paramedicine students’ learning. 03.01.2022 COVID-19 UPDATE - 18/03/2020 With the necessity for stronger precautions to be taken to manage the scourge of COVID-19, PARASOC has made the decision to postpone our upcoming events indefinitely until the situation is under control. As future health practitioners, we will always be advocates for the safety of all our members and the greater community.... We will, however, do our best to distribute high-quality information regarding COVID-19 to ensure that our members remain as informed as possible. We will also be striving to deliver content such as CPDs in creative ways to keep our wonderful community engaged during isolation, and ensure the mental health needs of our members are being met. In the meantime, our support remains with you all, particularly those managing front-line healthcare during this period. Your dedication to your roles is awe-inspiring, and we are immensely proud to be represented by you. These are trying times. Stay safe, stay kind. - PARASOC Executive Team 2020
