16.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week, staff member Terry and his cousin Jason, performed a Smoking Ceremony on their land for our West Street Nowra team. The smoking ceremony is ...a very significant part of Aboriginal culture, representing a healing and cleansing journey for all to acknowledge and appreciate our spiritual connection to mother earth. 'Always Was, Always Will Be' is not a theme that should be forgotten at the end of NAIDOC Week. As an organisation, One Door Mental Health recognises and acknowledges every day that we work on land belonging to our First Nations people. We will continue to support and make authentic efforts towards Makarrata - a process of peace and the coming together of two worlds - through relationships, collaboration, respect, opportunities, and governance. One Door will continue to challenge and empower our team to work within their own sphere of influence to promote social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with mental illness, their families, carers, and kinship groups. 16.01.2022 As COVID restrictions have eased further across Australia and the Christmas/New Year period approaches, many of us have social gatherings to go to. But what if we experience social anxiety? What if the periods of isolation this year have impacted on our feelings toward attending social events? '"In general, it does get easier, and that is in fact the core treatment for social anxiety essentially getting out there and doing it.... "The more you do that, the easier it becomes."' https://www.abc.net.au//how-to-cope-with-social-a/10562408

15.01.2022 The Mental Health Foundation Australia have created a Multicultural Mental Health Survey. The purpose of this survey is to gather information about CALD communities in Australia and to prepare recommendations to be sent to Local, State and Federal levels of Government about what is required in this important area of Multicultural Mental Health. We encourage all those who have migrated to Australia/ those who are of ethnic backgrounds to partake in this survey and help to improve the status of Multicultural Mental Health services in Australia. Questions have now been translated into Spanish, Sinhalese, Punjabi, Hindi, Greek, German, Filipino, Afrikaans, Urdu, Tamil, Arabic and Samoan to assist you with completing the main survey. https://www.mhfa.org.au/Survey.aspx

13.01.2022 What is burnout, is it a mental health issue and what can you do to address it? Check out this great article which interviews a counsellor, Tigist Kebede, to help explain burnout. 'According to Ms Kebede, 2020 has been a perfect storm of burnout triggers be it professional, care-related, or Black/activist burnout as "the idea of a work-life balance and the space for self-care have been almost non-existent" for most people. '"Zoom fatigue, a loss of idealism or faith in ou...r leaders, a feeling that you haven't accomplished what you wanted to how many people could truly say they weren’t experiencing burnout this year?"' https://www.abc.net.au//what-to-do-if-you-re-fee/100002964

06.01.2022 Jayke Burgess, Western Sydney Recovery College Manager, and Kathi Boorman, @One Door Mental Health CEO, were interviewed for this article in the Blue Mountains Gazette ahead of the annual Wellness Walk. The Wellness Walk aims to increase awareness of severe and complex mental illness and promotes walking as a way to improve mental wellbeing. Jayke said to the Gazette: "I have had a few moments in lockdown where I became aware of depression creeping in and my need to focus on... keeping myself well. "Isolation and loneliness can be big triggers for mental illness symptoms. Recovery is a journey with many ups, left, rights, downs, and managing this when we have all had big changes to our lifestyles and routines can be difficult." #WellnessWalk2020 #WellnessWalk #InThisTogether #MentalHealth #SuicideAwareness #smallstepsbigchanges #stepbysteptorecovery https://www.bluemountainsgazette.com.au//suicide-rate-inc/
