22.01.2022 Day 7 of Wudang Shen Memories. 2019 Training Trip to Japan. It’s been hard cutting the memories down to just 10....this trip makes the list due to its enormous influence of our school’s future. While in Japan this time I decided to stay in Oz for longer than planned and therefore would open Kids Classes, would share our entire Wudang system and not just parts we had time to cover, cemented our independence as a school while maintaining our connections to our Elders and past, passed a grading in Japanese Martial Arts (which determined what our direction forward for our Japanese Sword Club would be) and was able to show my personal improvement to my old training partner. I spent half a day meditating in a temple that gave me the clarity needed to move forward to today and beyond.

20.01.2022 Very happy to say JSC is open to the public again. Jump over to our other page and have a look.

19.01.2022 A year ago Shaolin Temple implemented an official grading system. Earlier in the month my contribution to this system and to Shaolin Culture was acknowledged (unfortunately I couldn’t go to China at the time) and I was told it will forever be a part of Shaolin Temple Culture. I means so much to me to be able to give back to a place that has given me so much.

19.01.2022 A school is much more than a teacher and students. The only reason I could train with teachers, go to China to train, spend so much time away from home teaching and spend countless hours late into the night working on curriculums is my extremely supportive wife. And my kids as well. Every student’s partner or parent, they too are a part of our school’s family. My teachers, our Martial Ancestors...a school is so much more than a teacher and students. So to everyone else, thank you.

18.01.2022 SO PROUD of our school’s Assistant Instructors for taking the initiative and completing the COVIDsafe Martial Arts Instructors course!!! We have the best family in our school that anyone could wish for!!

17.01.2022 Tonight was the last class for Ryu to be in helping us for a while, due to other commitments. Yes, Ryu is my son but he has worked so hard to help everyone develop and I am extremely proud and thankful to have had him there. The class would not have progressed to this point without him.

17.01.2022 A month ago it had been 9 years since our school got its first permanent dojo, in Saitama, Japan. Before that I had spent 10 years teaching in temples, schools, etc including this temple in Chiba, Japan (these photos aren’t mine). It was also on this temple grounds I had my first spar with a ninja (there is a ninja school nearby where my friend studied and while most students don’t consider themselves ninja, my friend was a little different). I am very proud of our school’s history but even more so extremely proud of our independence and what we have achieved in Japan and Australia. Our independence has been hard won at times but it has been worth it.

16.01.2022 Tonight’s Adult Wudang Class Grading was a perfect example of why our school exists. The camaraderie displayed and pure laughter showed how much of a family we have all become. The true leadership shown, the skills earned from months or years of effort, the exhausted bodies that refused to accept anything less than the best from themselves.....I am truly proud and honoured to be one of you. Congratulations and, sincerely, thank you.

15.01.2022 Tonight we welcomed 3 more Inner Door Students for Australia. All three have had very important, and positive, influence over our school. So proud to have them as family!

15.01.2022 Head on out to 160 Berserker St (next to the library) for a $7 car wash to support Access Recreation today.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone who graded tonight in our Kids Class and Adults Wudang Kungfu class last night. So proud of you all!!!

14.01.2022 Day 10 of Wudang Shen History. The Future! Our school is always evolving. The next 12 months were to be our biggest yet (things are only DELAYED, not canceled). We are opening more classes for kids & adults..including classes in Yeppoon, a training trip to Japan for adult students, our Bagua group opening, visiting teachers (Kungfu, Sanda, Sword, healing...) and our 20th Anniversary celebration which will now be in April 2021. Can’t wait to get back to it all together!! In the meantime... we have some new developments in our video program being announced this week.

14.01.2022 Recruitment for Shaolin training has ended and we are not taking any more new students for Shaolin at this time. All our other programs are, of course, open to new members. Thanks to everyone who enquired or came in.

14.01.2022 PLAY LIKE CHILDREN is an extremely important principle in our school. By playing we enjoy life, we laugh and share positivity....but also it keeps us loose, keeps us soft (free of tension) which is a necessary state, both physically and mentally, required for higher levels of Wudang Kungfu.

13.01.2022 Day 4 of Wudang Shen History. Training trip to China & Japan. Some students came with me to China to meet my teacher & Gongfu Brothers and Shaolin Temple. I returned to Japan for more training in Japanese Sword martial arts and to teach Wudang in Japan. These training trips are going to be available to all students in the years ahead and we will be bringing some teachers here to visit us from time to time. This brotherhood (& sisterhood) is an essential component of our school.

12.01.2022 The ceremony to officialize the collaboration between Shaolin temple and Henan University on the martial arts program.

10.01.2022 Dragon toes. The number of toes on a (oriental) dragon tells which country it comes from. Dragons originated in the east with Qinglong the Azure Dragon, one of the 5 Directions (which XuanWu, the deity of Wudang and inspiration for our style, also belongs to). Therefore dragons with 3 toes are Japanese (the east, closer to Qinglong’s palace) and as they moved west toward China they grew toes, ending with 5 toes in China.

10.01.2022 Day 8 of Wudang Shen History. Kids Classes. Although we had Kids Classes in Japan we decided not to have any Kids Classes in Oz, until recently. And I couldn’t be more proud of our little Martial Artists and effort they are all putting in. Our group is growing closer and stronger, more confident with their Kungfu, and more disciplined in class. I can’t wait to see where these little ones will go in time ahead once classes can return. (I’ve used photos of my own kids only due to not clearing it with parents to use their pictures for this.)

10.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all students, friends & Wudang Shen instructors! I hope you’ve had as great a day as I’ve had!!! Gotta love this big guy, he always knows exactly what to bring every year! (We have a big year ahead with our 20th Anniversary and a few extra surprises! )

10.01.2022 Very proud to have played a small part in establishing this course used at Shaolin Temple...to give back to a place that has given me so much. (The second course was on last week at Shaolin Temple.)

10.01.2022 8pm on June 1st, all over Japan fireworks companies secretly set off fireworks (telling only that it would happen, not where to discourage people gathering) to send happiness and positive vibes to everyone in this difficult time. We can all do great things if we work together in a positive way. Amituofo

09.01.2022 In less than one hour we are back in classes!!! Tonight we have our first Kids Kungfu Class & Adults Shaolin Class since lockdown (with some restrictions, of course). I can’t wait to get back into training and see everyone!!!

07.01.2022 I’ve had some very happy chats this afternoon with students and.....yes, we are on the road back to regular classes! At this point, it seems classes will return to normal July 10 but we will be back June 12 with no contact classes (that in itself will be interesting.....). From May 15 we will be trying to do small informal groups in outside spaces with zero contact. It isn’t as quick as I thought last week but it’s a much better scenario than six more months of video lessons .

07.01.2022 The best!! I can not recommend highly enough!!! So glad to see there open again.

05.01.2022 Day 5 of Wudang Shen History. Our first Black Sash grading in Oz. Traditionally our style doesn’t have sashes or grades. I implemented these simply so new students knew who to follow and take advice from, and applied the sash to the system of rank my teacher uses. These 3 students became Black Sashes during a 4.5 hour grading, two & a half years after starting. Admittedly they did a lot of semiprivate & private classes to reach it early but it’s important to note we use the traditional way of rank....meaning Shodan/Black Sash is seen as the beginning step and can be achieved earlier than in modern martial arts. The term Shodan literally means Beginning Degree or first grade from where someone is now ready to learn.

04.01.2022 Day 6 of Wudang Shen History. Japanese Sword Club. Within our group we have a private club for studying Jodo (Short Pole) & Kenjutsu (Sword), Japanese weapon Martial Arts important for developing strong martial spirit. I had learned a little Kenjustu in Oz but started seriously in Japan in 1999. Our Japanese Sword Club started in Oz the same day as Wudang classes but we have kept it relatively small & private, keeping a very old school approach to our group. Still, this training has been an integral component in shaping our school’s vibe and atmosphere.

03.01.2022 Tonight 5 of our students became the first group of Inner Door Students for our school ever in Australia, in a ceremony very similar to my own with my teacher in 2014 (pictured because I was unable to get a picture tonight). Each embodies what Wudang Shen is all about, true Martial Spirit and brotherhood (& sisterhood). Congratulations to them all!!!

02.01.2022 Congratulations to our friends at Mackay Kendo Club!

02.01.2022 MASSIVE congratulations to everyone in our Kids Class who attempted their first grading tonight (this photo is an old one, not from tonight). I was honoured and immensely proud to see the effort and true Martial Spirit in the making. Thank you to everyone involved.

01.01.2022 Day 9 of Wudang Shen History. Video Lessons. I NEVER thought video lessons would be a thing for us. But I never thought the world would be on lockdown either . All of this is free for our students.....we are a traditional martial arts school, not a gym. Weekly we have at least 2 live videos for each class, backed up by prerecorded videos (recorded on our last day of training). I’ve been receiving videos back (which has been making my day each time!!!!) and have seen true Martial spirit from our littlest to eldest. I’m not a fan of video learning, I don’t believe it can come close to replacing the interaction between student & teacher, but I am glad this technology is available to us and even more glad so many students and parents are taking advantage of this.

01.01.2022 A bit over 20 years ago I decided I wanted to find the roots of Wudang Kungfu after a few years of training Wudang. Our style, Wudang Zhaobao, is said to be the origin of Internal Kungfu but I wanted to find the other arts practiced in those early times at Wudang. I spent years talking with and training with people that had better insight than me. In the process I learned a few different things from the old days of Wudang that really helped with my understanding. But rarel...y did I work to retain what I was learning because my belief is that everything I needed in a martial arts sense was in Wudang Zhaobao. If I didn’t get it, it wasn’t the style that was lacking, it was my knowledge that was lacking. In later years I worked to learn some things that embody the true essence of Wudang and also to become better at the things I learned outside of Wudang Zhaobao that I feel further the training. Those methods are about to be opened to the public through our school and not just practiced by our advanced students. See more
