Expected to turn southwest. Warning Zone: Cape Melville to Cardwell, extending inland to Palmerville and Chillagoe, including Cooktown, Port Douglas, Cairns, and Innisfail. Details of Tropical Cyclone Kimi at 4:00 pm AEST: Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 75 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 100 kilometres per hour. Location: within 30 kilometres of 15.5 degrees South 146.5 degrees East, estimated to be 135 kilometres east of Cooktown and 175 kilometres north northeast of Cairns. Movement: south at 9 kilometres per hour. Tropical cyclone Kimi has been moving slowly south through today, but is expected to turn more to the southwest tonight and cross the north tropical coast on Monday. The slow southward movement has delayed the expected crossing time to Monday afternoon. There remains considerable uncertaintly with the crossing time and location. The system may intensify further over the next 24 hours and may reach category 2 before crossing. Hazards: DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts to 130 km/h may develop about coastal and island areas between Cooktown and Innisfail on Monday as the core of the cyclone approaches. GALES with gusts to 120km/h may develop about coastal and island areas between Cape Melville and Cardwell from early Monday morning. These GALES may extend inland to Palmerville and Chillagoe on Monday as the cyclone moves inland. HEAVY RAINFALL is forecast to develop about coastal and adjacent inland areas between Cape Flattery and Cardwell from Sunday evening. A Flood Watch is current for this area; refer to that product for more detail. ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES are likely on Sunday night and Monday as the cyclone approaches and crosses the coast, however they are unlikely to exceed the highest tide of the year. Recommended Action: People between Cape Melville and Cardwell should immediately commence or continue preparations, especially securing boats and property using available daylight hours. - For cyclone preparedness and safety advice, visit Queensland's Disaster Management Services website (www.disaster.qld.gov.au) - If you choose to take shelter away from your home, stay COVID-19 safe and pack a mask and hand sanitiser (if you have them). - For emergency assistance call the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 (for assistance with storm damage, rising flood water, fallen trees on buildings or roof damage). Next Advice: The next advice will be issued by 8:00 pm AEST Sunday 17 January. This warning is also available through TV and Radio Broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. 07.01.2022 IMPORTANT COMMUNITY NOTICE Pine Creek - Yarrabah Road Preliminary Works Underway The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is progressing duplication of ...the Bruce Highway between Edmonton and Gordonvale. TMR advises preliminary works for the realignment of Pine Creek - Yarrabah Road and cane rail infrastructure in the area are currently underway. Works include survey marking, clearing and cane rail infrastructure earthworks. During works, motorists will continue to use Warner Road access onto the Bruce Highway. Once construction of the new overpass and connection road is complete, access to the Bruce Highway will be via the realigned Pine Creek - Yarrabah Road. Please see map below for details on the future route. Works will include: Cane rail will be constructed first and completed prior to the 2021 cane harvest season Road and rail construction activities between Warner Road and Hall Road, including new intersections This work will be completed during our normal working hours of Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm. The project team will make every effort to keep disruptions to a minimum and would like to thank the local community for their patience during these works. Upcoming changes: Traffic changes, including reduced speed limits, temporary signage, changes to traffic flow and short-term traffic disruptions. Traffic controllers will be on site to assist and direct road users. Haulage routes will travel to and from site via Hall Road and Warner Road. Audible noise from construction activities and heavy machinery may occur. Reversing beepers and flashing lights are a safety requirement. Nearby residents and businesses can expect increased construction activities, which may cause dust, light and vibration. Impacts will be monitored and minimised where possible. Access to properties will be maintained where possible, alternative arrangements will be made with directly affected residents as required. Completion of the realigned Pine Creek - Yarrabah Road is expected mid-2022, weather permitting. For more information, please contact the project team on 1800 187 937 or [email protected]
