25.01.2022 The 2021 New Year count down in front of Jianghan Customs House() might be the most meaningful New Year countdown in Wuhan to date. The Jianghan Customs Off...ice was one of the four most important customs offices in Imperial Maritime Customs Service of Qing Dynasty. The customs service was the first modern government department in China. Led by Sir Robert Hart from the UK, executives in the customs service were mostly recruited from Western countries in the first seventy years. Therefore, the system and customs houses in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan more resembled a British governmental agency and buildings in Victorian era, rather than traditional Chinese Yamens(). Have you noticed that the bell melody was the Westminster chimes? It had been played for more than forty years until it was replaced by Chairman Mao's theme song The East is Red in 1966. In 1987, The Westminster chimes has been restored and strikes the hours ever since. In the turn of 2020/2021, these tunes have witnessed a tough step of Wuhan in her path to modernity and prosperity, after their first struck nearly one hundred years ago. See more

22.01.2022 Being interviewed by Patrick Fok of FSN last Sunday, I offered my opinion about deteriorating Aussie-Sino relationship which was jeopardised by Scott Morrison's... clumsy diplomatic maneuvers. Lack of profound understanding of China is the major problem of the ScoMo Administration. ScoMo might tried to follow President Trump's hostile standing towards China, but he probably does not know that there are a few real experts of China related matters in Trump's advisory team to advise his aggressive moves. I personally do not think that Australia should take hostile standing towards China at this moment. But If ScoMo wants to play, play it wisely. As I expected, being a British grew up in Hong Kong and based in Beijing for a long time, Mr Fok understands Aussie-Sino relationship far better than most of those so-called experts of China in Australia. The ScoMo administration and the right-leaning mainstream medias in Australia do not trust Australian-Chinese like me. But If there were some British experts like Mr Fok in ScoMo's team, a healthy Aussie-Sino relationship would endure. Or the situation would not be worsening, had they merely read series of recent articles about diplomacy of China and Aussie-Sino relationship on The Economist. See more

20.01.2022 The Western Returned Scholars Association () organized a clean-up volunteering activity on the bank of Yangtze River last Sunday. And we had a wonderful sundowner party at the magnificent Jiangshanghui, literally means "get every best things together of the Yangtze River") restaurant after the clean-up. Some of the participants were in the Dream Team which helped transportation of groceries and necessities by driving their owned cars during the Covid lockdown. I was ...in the table with a German-trained cardiothoracic surgeon and other PhDs in varied fields. In the first picture, I was discussing the historic influence of the SOAS in the transformation of the British colonial system to a successful modern diplomatic network with a returned visiting scholar of that school. The Jiangshanghui is the best high-end dining venue in Wuchang with unbeatable river view. It is one of your must-visit restaurants in Wuhan. See more

05.01.2022 Chinese people are celebrating Christmas nowadays. Unlike Japanese, Chinese do not treasure Kentucky Fried Chicken as their traditional Christmas dinner. Jiaozi...( dumpling), on the other hand, is becoming a symbol of Christmas Eve in China. Yes, Chinese are eating Jiaozi on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year's Eve. And because Chinese are still considered CNY the real New Year, Christmas is now seen as the beginning of the end of year season. Therefore, Chinese are celebrating Christmas by working harder and shopping fanatically. I went to a shopping centre last night and it was much busier in this "silent night". See more
