18.01.2022 Dear Wurundjeri Woiwurrung community, While obviously an important cause, our more vulnerable members (those who are older and/or have an existing health concern), should not be attending Saturday's Black Lives Matter protest in Melbourne. The predicted numbers are in the tens of thousands and we are still in the midst of a serious pandemic. A cause that seeks to protect the most vulnerable should be taking every precaution and advising accordingly. Thank you... Alex Parmington CEO - Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
17.01.2022 Hello to all Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people living in Victoria, and eligible to vote in the Victorian elections for candidates on the First People's Assembly of Victoria The Wurundjeri/Woiwurrung people are the traditional custodians of Melbourne and its surrounding suburbs, and as such we feel it is our cultural responsibility to speak on Country in the Victorian Treaty negotiations. The Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation was Victoria...s first Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP), and we have over 30 years experience providing leadership in government negotiations, as well as protection of our cultural heritage. Wurundjeri culture, like other Aboriginal cultures is a welcoming one, and Wurundjeri have been welcoming and caring for everyone living on Country. If you care about having a strong voice in our treaty negotiation, we ask firstly, that you please register to vote and secondly, vote for our Wurundjeri candidates so we can continue to look after those who choose to make Wurundjeri/Woiwurrung Country their home. Please check out some of Wurundjeri's candidates for the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria on our Facebook page

15.01.2022 Hi Wurundjeri community Many of you may be aware of a meeting being held on Saturday 20th October at Camp Jungai (see Notices). The purpose of this meeting is to authorise an Indigenous land use agreement under the Native Title Act 1993 as well as a suite of agreements under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic) between the State of Victoria and Taungurung. Taungurung have claimed Tooterie as one of their Ancestors, while not adding any of her descendants to this cl...aim. Taungurung have also claimed Louisa Sheppard who has descendants who married into the Wandins. We need numbers with Taungurung connections to attend this meeting to ensure this agreement is not successful. Please contact Charley at [email protected] or call (03)9416 2905 during business hours to advise if you wish to attend. Charley will arrange a bus for people needing transport. Waywurru Mary and her daughter Lydia Beaton c.1851-1886 from Wangaratta and Beechworth in Waywurru Country. 13.01.2022 Wurundjeri tribe continues indigenous cultural practises. On Friday 13th October at the culturally significant site of Bolin Bolin Billabong in Bulleen, Wurundjeri community members scarred a red gum tree, removing bark to produce a traditional bark canoe, known as a koorong in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. This event was open to the general public, and was well attended, with guests invited to learn about the importance of maintaining cultural practises... to aboriginal people. As one Wurundjeri Elder stated on the day, "if you are not practising your culture you have to question how healthy that culture is and whether culture still exists. Days like this, that keep our cultural practises alive are so important to our community." Although the event included a public component, the actual removal and shaping of the bark was conducted by Wurundjeri members only. Prior to removing the bark, the red gum was smoked and thanked for its gift. Uncle Colin Hunter Jnr performed the Welcome to Country, for the public component of the event; another traditional practise that continues today in a more contemporary format. A smoking ceremony was also performed to cleanse and purify the area and all those attending. The fire used to perform the smoking ceremony was lit using traditional methods As well as witnessing the bark being removed from the selected tree, which received rounds of applause, guests were treated to a selection of indigenous bush food tastes, catered by Charcoal Lane. The event was made possible due to the commitment of the Wurundjeri community, and thanks to the generous funding, largely sponsored by the Dahl Trust, but with extra funding provided by the Port Phillip & Westernport Catchment Management Association (PPWCMA) and Melbourne Water

09.01.2022 Uncle Colin Hunter Candidate for the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria Metropolitan Region I am a proud and passionate Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Elder, who worked in cultural heritage for 10 years before beginning a role in local government. Having received a Cert II and IV in Indigenous Leadership, and a Cert IV in local government administration, as well as being a member on the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung Cultural Her...itage Aboriginal Corporation Board of Directors and Co-Chair at South Eastern DHHS Aboriginal Working Group, I have proven skills negotiating with government departments and advocating for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In my 12 years at Yarra City Council I am very proud of the leadership shown and the work I have been able to achieve, including being the first Victorian local government to properly consult community before making the decision to make a stand on January 26, supporting the Change the Date campaign along with other recommendations to the Federal government. My work at Yarra Council has included supporting some of the most disadvantaged community members, such as the Fitzroy parkies, protecting the culturally important meeting place at Atherton Gardens from development and installing the Stolen Generations Marker after extensive consultation. I believe solid consultation processes and strong relationships are at the heart of all meaningful projects, decisions and policies. As a Wurundjeri Board member for approximately 11 years, I have seen our organisation grow, overseeing the expanding economic development of the organisation and increase in culturally relevant employment opportunities. My role as Elder and Traditional Owner of Melbourne has allowed me the chance to speak for the protection of culturally important landscapes as well as the natural environment more generally. I was on the Interim Yarra River Lands Advisory Committee now established and operating as the Birrarung Council. I was also honoured to present the Yarra River Protection (Wilip-gin Birrarung murron) Act 2017 and speaking Woiwurrung language in parliament for the first time since colonisation. I feel a strong connection to the land of my Ancestors. I was asked by my community to nominate as a candidate on the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria and I feel strongly that I possess the skills, experience, passion and capacity to help develop a Treaty framework that is culturally appropriate and that achieves the best possible outcomes for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria See more
