15.01.2022 Each week well be introducing you to the members of The Lives We Lead Work life Reference Group. Meet Tahnee Gilmour who works at PWDWA as Peer Support & S...elf - Advocacy engagement officer. Heres what she said about being part of the project: Im excited to be on the reference group for The Lives We Lead, because of my own personal experience living with a disability and looking for work opportunities while growing up in a small regional town. Believing in my own strengths, and someone giving me a go, were two very different things. Being in a job now where my strengths and experience are valued is empowering. Im stoked to have a role that allows me to provide support and education to people with disabilities, building their capacity to self advocate. I think its important for people with disabilities to have a voice, and for their strengths and abilities to be recognised. And I want to play my part in changing perspectives, particularly those of employers, about our capabilities. I hope it changes the opportunities on offer. 15.01.2022 This September, Australia will be reviewed for only the second time ever since becoming a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities ...in 2008. Disability rights advocates will also be presenting our own report. This is an important time to for our community to ensure the world gets the whole story of how Australia has changed since 2008, as well as where were still falling behind. Its important that you have your say too. Fill in this survey and let us know what our Working Group needs to tell the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities this year. http://dpoa.org.au/shadow-report-survey/ #DPOAustralia #CRPD #AusCRPDReview #auspol

14.01.2022 The Virtual Centre for Women and Girls with Disability A new online resource made by and for women and girls with disability... Women with Disabilities Australia is excited to announce that it has received funding from the NDIS under the Information Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program to create a Virtual Centre for Women and Girls with Disability. The Virtual Centre will be an online one-stop shop for accessible, inclusive and practical resources and information for women and girls with disability, their families, friends, support persons, and carers. The Virtual Centre will focus on providing information on the rights of women and girls with disability to: 1. Decision-making and agency; 2. Leadership and participation; 3. Sexual and reproductive health; and 4. Safety from all forms of violence. These four priority areas have been identified by women with disability in Australia through community-wide consultation and engagement processes, backed by an extensive and growing body of evidence-based research. Women and girls with disability struggle with a lack of resources available in each of the four priority areas in formats that are inclusive and accessible to them, their families, friends, support persons and carers. The Virtual Centre will help to address this gap. The Virtual Centre will also provide information that may assist front-line workers and professionals tomake referral pathways and mainstream services more inclusive of, and accessible to, women and girls with disability. Women and girls with disability across Australia will lead, and be central to, the development of the Virtual Centre at every stage. This will include the selection and creation of content and resources, advising on the design and accessibility of the Virtual Centre, and participating as members of project governance and advisory structures. Women with Disabilities Australia will be holding a workshop in collaboration with Women with Disabilities WA Inc. Come and join us in Perth on ; Friday 19 July from 11.00am 2.30pm. Citiplace. Perth City Railway Station Complex, Wellington St, Perth WA Lunch will be catered for. More information or to confirm a seat, Please contact Wendy at [email protected] or Liz at [email protected] Please RSVP by 28 June for catering and accessibility purposes. Bring along your mobile devices for a trial of the Virtual Centre for Women and Girls with Disabilities.
