14.01.2022 Students today conducted a special Wagga Wagga High School Anzac Assembly to commemorate the centenary of the 3rd Battle of Ypres, otherwise known as the Battle of Passchendaele. Year 9 students shared the stories of soldiers whose names appear on the WWHS Honour Board whom we know served in France and Belgium in 1917. These people experienced a particularly horrific and dangerous theatre of the war, with an 85% casualty rate, well above the overall average of a 51% casualty rate for Australians in World War 1. The assembled students, staff and parents listened intently to dramatic and often harrowing recounts of service and sacrifice. Our student leaders then conducted the Ceremony of Remembrance concluding with a wreath being laid beneath the Honour Board.
