22.01.2022 As Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins explained, most people dont complain about sexual harassment, and those who do complain find it quite unsatisfying. They find that they might suffer their careers as a result, but that the person who has perpetrated often continues in their career. Sexual harassments key driver is power disparities, and often that is gender inequality as well. #sexualharassment #sexdiscrimination #genderinequality

15.01.2022 ** Content Warning - Domestic and Family Violence ** ‘I broke my silence: My story of domestic violence’ is a speech based on Emma Murphy’s Domestic Violence video that has been viewed over 50 million times and the aftermath of her assault. Emma is now focusing on the positive impact that these developments have had in her life. Emma is a 28-year-old fitness blogger and single mother of two. In 2015, she faced repeated domestic battery from her ex-boyfriend and father of her... children. After one such incident that left her with a black eye, she decided to take to social media, where she posted a vulnerable video of herself telling the world about the abuse, deceit, lies and betrayal she was going through. In doing so, she consciously turned the terror of being a victim into a positive situation, refusing to let domestic violence diminish or define her as a person. Emma is now a Domestic Violence Advocate, travelling the world to raise awareness for women and children who cannot speak for themselves. 10.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE: The JobKeeper provisions in the Fair Work Act have been extended to continue past 28 September 2020, but with some changes. In particular, it is important that you are aware of the following changes:... - After 28 September, qualifying employers can no longer use the original JobKeeper provisions to make agreements with eligible employees to take annual leave at half pay, or make requests (which employees could not unreasonably refuse) that employees take some annual leave. - After 28 September, any agreement to take annual leave that was made under these provisions stops applying. - After 28 September, the usual rules about taking annual leave apply. Your Award, Enterprise Agreement, employment contract or workplace policy may set out how to take annual leave (including if you can be directed to use leave). See more

09.01.2022 Did you know that, under the Fair Work Act, all employees have certain protected rights at work? This includes a protection from misrepresentation, which is when someone knowingly or recklessly makes a false or misleading representation to a person who would be expected to rely on that representation. For example, an employer cannot tell a pregnant long-term causal employee that parental leave is only for permanent staff if they know it is not true. ... You can access further information in relation to your protections at work on the Fair Work Ombudsman's website here: https://buff.ly/2H3KSkI If you require specific advice in relation to your protected rights, please do not hesitate to contact us on 1800 621 458. 08.01.2022 Since 2015, progress toward gender equality has been marginal. This has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been particularly detrimental for women. The McKinsey Global Institute has published an informative article explaining ten points that all people should be aware of in relation to gender inequality. It highlighted the following: 1. Tackling the global gender gap will boost global GDP; 2. Progress toward gender equality has been marginal since 2015 l...arge gaps remain; 3. Over the past two decades, while women in advance economies have made large gains as workers, consumers, and savers, they have faced rising costs and insecurity; 4. Women continue to work a double shift at home; 5. Women face growing challenges from automation; 6. The challenge for women is now even greater as they experience economic fallout from COVID-19; 7. We can grow our way out of some gender equality issues but not others; 8. Companies that are gender and ethnically diverse outperform their peers; 9. The corporate career pipeline for women is leaky, especially early on; and 10. All stakeholders need to work together to maintain and accelerate progress on gender equality. See more

08.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE: It is important to be aware that, from 28 September 2020, certain employers, which are known as legacy employers, can use some of the JobKeeper provisions (with some changes) for their previously eligible employees if they: - previously participated in the JobKeeper scheme, but no longer qualify (or choose not to participate) from 28 September 2020; and - can demonstrate at least a 10% decline in turnover for a relevant quarter and get a certificate from an eligible financial service provider or make a statutory declaration if they are a small business employer (i.e. employers who have less than 15 employees).

We will continue to protect such vulnerable employees by holding employers to account.

06.01.2022 According to the Productivity Commission, workplace bullying is costing Australian businesses up to $36 billion dollars per year. As NT Working Women's Centre explains, given that two thirds of people still report that they are experiencing bullying and harassment at work, workplaces should invest more in training employers to implement effective policies and learn the skills to respond to bullying and harassment.

05.01.2022 Sex Discrimination Commissioner Kate Jenkins has nominated a redesigned childcare system as her top priority, saying the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted its importance and the massive barrier to work posed by a lack of accessibility. "In the absence of child care and the absence of workplace accommodation, then it just leaves women out of work altogether which has big impacts," Ms Jenkins said. #genderequity #familyresponsibilities #COVID19
