17.01.2022 We’re staring down the barrel of a hotter, drier future, so how and what should we be planting in our local gardens, parks and reserves? At yesterday’s Parkland...s Albury Wodonga AGM, a panel of practitioners touched on a range of topics including the importance of genetic diversity, sourcing quality seeds from hotter drier places, long stem planting, devoting time to establishing new plants and managing existing vegetation. Cool green spaces and canopy cover will be more important than ever in a hotter future. Plants preferences might include river red gums, white cedars, wilgas, grevilleas, casuarinas and weeping grasses. Stringy barks, yellow boxes, red boxes and Blakely’s red gums might no longer be the best choices. Without a doubt each region will need a climate-ready revegetation guide. Sound water management will also be vital, with suggestions including storm-water harvesting, groundwater preservation, deep injection watering and watering during cooler hours. Sincere thanks to panellists Claire Coulson (Wodonga Council Natural Resource Planner), Paul Scannell (former AlburyCity Botanic Garden curator), Fleur Stelling (horticulturalist) and Martin Driver (Australian Network for Plant Conservation Project Manager) for kick-starting this important conversation. Huge thanks also to the Bhutanese Community Farm, Albury-Wodonga for their absolutely delicious lunch! See more
