The condition is known clinically as Sarcopenia but you’ll know it as older people losing muscle, strength and function. And one of the most effective ways to deal with this condition is a treatment known medically as lifting stuff. . It’s my not-always-popular message that if more older people (fifty plus) were prescribed (and subsequently followed) an appropriate strength training program, across the board we would see improved strength levels, better posture, increased muscle mass, greater bone density, improved function, range of movement, balance and mobility, less age-related falls (a massive problem), less social disconnection, less depression, more independence into old-age and a drastic reduction in the need for many other ‘prescriptions’. . But then how would the drug companies make money from that? . *And BTW Malcolm Turnbull (if you’re interested), a nation of post-fifty year-olds with more muscle, greater strength and improved overall physical function will be considerably less costly in terms of health care. So maybe get your peeps to do a cost-benefit analysis on free dumbbells for the grey brigade? :) See more
