15.01.2022 Effective 1st July 2015, the Fair Work Commission has decreed a 2.5% increase to minimum wages for all classifications. This decision will result in an increase for the new national minimum wage to $17.29 per hour. This may or may not affect staff you have currently employed. The rates can be viewed online at the Fair Work Australia website https://www.fwc.gov.au/

09.01.2022 CONTRACTOR Vs EMPLOYEE A few reminders for employers. This is an area that can be very confusing. Especially if your mates down the pub give you conflicting advice! So here are a few highlights from info the ATO have put out on a fact sheet. 1. Just because a worker has an ABN does NOT make them a Contractor. 2. Just because "everyone" in an industry treats workers as contractors doesnt mean they have got it right. 3. The length of a job (short or long) or regularity of work ...makes no difference to whether a worker is an employee or contractor. 4. The 80% rule that applies to Personal Services Income does NOT apply if considering if a worker is an employee or contractor. 5. If the worker has a registered business name that does NOT make them a contractor. 6. Setting a worker up as a Contractor does NOT get you out of paying super guarantee for that worker. 7. Submitting an invoice does not make the worker a contractor. 8. If a worker in nature is legally an employee, a contract does not make them a contractor. Every employee is different and depends entirely on the working arrangement and the terms and conditions under which the work is done.

07.01.2022 CLAIMING MOTOR VEHICLE DEDUCTIONS From the 1st July 2015 car expense deductions for individuals were simplified. - The 12% of cost method was abolished as was the one-third of actual expenses method. - That leaves the cents per km (capped at 5,000km) and the Log Book method. - The cents per km method was simplified to use a standard rate of 66 cents per km for the 2015/2016 income year.... If you receive a car allowance from your employer (or you are an employer) you need to know that you must withhold PAYG Tax from any allowance paid to an employee above the 66 cents. If your'e not sure how this works or if it affects you then just ask!

06.01.2022 At MKM we have had a busy year with some steady growth. We hosted a very successful business development seminar in early December with Paul Dunn, attended by over 150 clients and associates. Our focus has been firmly on assisting our business clients to achieve better profits and greater growth.... To assist with our business development focus we now offer the following services to business clients:- Discovery Sessions- Find out what makes your business tick and what it takes to ramp it up to achieve your business and personal goals. Cash Conversion Cycle:- All businesses need cash to give space and to fuel growth. These sessions are designed to find that cash that is hidden in your business. Cash Flow Story:- What’s your story? What do your numbers really look like. These sessions drill down on what the numbers really mean and how to track the key numbers on a regular basis. We look at the impact of the power of one on your profit (using the 7 key business drivers) and by definition the value of your business. If you want to explore any of the above then by all means contact us for an appointment with Michael in the new financial year. Staff Role Changes:- In order to enhance our offering we will continue with our focus of helping small businesses grow and prosper. We see this as an important service that is lacking in our region. In order to continue this effectively we have made some minor role changes. Michael will lead up the Business Development Division so will move away from the day-to-day taxation side of the Business. Kirsten will head up the Tax/Compliance division and Sarah will handle the Individual returns. Sally, Jenny and Nicole will continue in their current roles. Sally as accountant support and tax specialist, Jenny in reception and administration (director of first impressions) and Nicole as client liaison in regard to tax deadlines, debt arrangements and BAS lodgements.
