23.01.2022 Love your guts! Here's my latest kitchen experiment - kombucha fermented tea (KT). Consumption of KT has always been associated with different health benefits, particularly for improving gut health. ... Bacteria lives throughout your body, but the ones in your gut may have the biggest impact on your well-being. They line your entire digestive system and affect everything from your metabolism to your mood to your immune system. In fact, the majority of our immune system is housed in the gut. So it is important to make sure the digestive system is functioning properly. Your gut is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients that support the bodys functions (from energy production to hormone balance), skin health, mental health, and even toxin and waste elimination. Here are a few suggestions to improve your gut health: Chew your food thoroughly to aid digestion. Eat your five + two fruits (two) and vegetables (five) each day. Drink plenty of filtered water. Include fermented foods in your diet to increase the number of friendly microbes in your intestines. Keep refined, white flour, sugar and processed foods low

14.01.2022 Today is International Mother Earth Day. Wow, Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. We all realise nature is suffering. Australian fires, droughts, floods and now worldwide we face COVID -19, a health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.... Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can increase contact and the transmission of infectious diseases from animals to humans (zoonotic diseases) like COVID-19. From one new infection disease that emerges in humans every 4 months, 75% of these emerging diseases come from animals, according to UN Environment. This shows the close relationships between human, animal and environmental health. Visible, positive impact whether through improved air quality or reduced greenhouse gas emissions are but temporary, because they come on the back of tragic economic slowdown and human distress. Lets remind ourselves more than ever, on this International Mother Earth Day, that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Heres wishing long-term harmony with Mother Earth.

09.01.2022 Portion distortion... Did you know plate sizes have changed dramatically over the years? Meaning, we are consuming ever bigger portions on ever larger dinner plates. Add to this, food manufacturers constantly pushing us to eat more.... Even food advertising talks in size (not taste or nutrition) what about the "foot long sub" - in short for "submarine". As our food starts being described in those size terms, I get concerned. Its easy to over consume food and feel the need to fill your dinner plates or beautiful bowls - it would be mean not to, right. But how can we learn to control our helpings? Research suggests changes in plate size may be useful in influencing food portion sizes over time, when the size of the plates is decreased incrementally. How large are your plates and bowls? And who likes seconds?? Time to get grandmas old plates and bowls out. If youre struggling with your weight and would like a professional to help you achieve your weight loss goal? 08.01.2022 We know processed foods are not great for our health, although having an occasional treat is ok. 04.01.2022 Snacking more? If youve purchased extra snack foods, particularly, ultra-processed cookies, salty snacks, and ice cream, youre not alone. Purchases of these products are at an all-time high. The health concerns of Covid-19 coupled with the mental load and increased weathering of collective stress, grief, and fear, is resulting in an increase in the frequency of snacking on convenience foods. ... While this is a predicted physiological response, as brain chemicals alter as a response to high stress and uncertainty, the side-effect can be eating in excess of individual energy requirements, prompting concern for growing overweight and lets not forget, lack of nutrition. Time to order those snacks into lock-down and create some healthy ones. One of my favourite snacks is, sliced apple, spread with a little nut butter (real nut butter)... delicious and nutritious. Remember that old saying? an apple a day, keeps the doctor away...maybe theres some truth in it. Check-out the recipe below for inspiration.

02.01.2022 Hot and Bothered?? Hot flushes during menopause are distressing for women and cause poor quality of life. Hot flushes (vasomotor symptoms) and night sweats are common after menopause and affect almost 50 to 85% of women over the age of 45 years.... The most accepted hypothesis for why women experience hot flushes during menopause and beyond, is a narrowing of the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) triggered by the drop and fluctuations in the hormone estrogen. Research studies suggest that foods high in phytoestrogens, in particular, Flaxseeds (sometimes called linseed) have a significant improvement in reducing daily hot flushes. In fact, menopausal symptoms decreased and the quality of life increased among the women who used flaxseeds for 3 months. This is the most widely attributed health benefit of phytoestrogen consumption. If youre feeling hot and bothered, add 1 to 2 tbsps of ground Flaxseeds (or linseeds) to your daily diet, for example; o sprinkle some on yoghurt o add flaxseed to your smoothie o make some flaxseed crackers or o sprinkle flaxseed on salads or soups If youre looking for an alternative to menopause hormone therapy (MHT) or just wanting to manage your symptoms naturally, phytoestrogens could be your new best friend!
