12.01.2022 Have you ever heard of, been to or lived in Wyalkatchem? Your State Library is featuring WA regional towns on its Facebook Page. It's an opportunity to share st...ories, old photos and connect with old friends. Recently featured Tom Price, Paraburdoo, Busselton, Mandurah, Wittenoom and Kalgoorlie... Wyalkatchem (also known as Wylie) is located in the central Wheatbelt, 192 kilometres from Perth. Its name is Aboriginal in origin, the meaning unknown. Prior to European pastoralists arriving in the 1870's, the Ballardong Nyoongar people had lived in the area for many thousands of years. When the extension of the railway east from Dowerin was planned in 1908, land was set aside for a future townsite in the area of Walcatching Tank. A few years the townsite of Wyalkatchem was gazetted and blossomed as the siding grew in importance. In 1932 two grain elevators were installed at the railway siding, marking the very first place where bulk wheat was collected in Western Australia. Today the original grain elevators loom over the entrance to the town. Symbols of a town which has became known as the 'cradle of bulk loading' in the Western Australian wheatbelt. The town's other claim to fame is winning the 2000 and 2002 state Tidy Town award and then the national award in 2003. Today visitor attractions include the CBH Agricultural Museum and the Old School House Museum full of interesting memorabilia. The Wyalkatchem area is also a globally recognised biodiveristy hotspot containing a high number of floral species under threat of future extinction. This gallery includes a selection of many wonderful historic images by George Henry Riches (1887-1974). Including a rarely seen photograph of an Aboriginal camp outside of Wyalkatchem at a time when Noongar people were not permitted to rent or buy a house. George grew up and eventually succeeded his father on a farm called 'Wilderness'.
