25.01.2022 Aronia x prunifolias turn! All from the same shrub. This one is now available from our online store. We mostly grow this hybrid (between the red and black chokeberry) for its blockbuster autumn colour. It also produces clusters of white flowers in spring, which go on to form edible purple fruit. They are astringent as hell (hence the common name of chokeberry ) until exposed to cold weather, which improves their flavour.

25.01.2022 A welcome break from bleak grey days...

25.01.2022 Dicentra ‘Spring Morning’ playing nicely with grays and purples.

24.01.2022 Viola odorata ‘Rosea’. An amazingly fragrant pink form of this classic evergreen perennial. I’ve been meaning to try candying them for a few years now, but haven’t got around to it... They’re always flowering during late winter, the busiest period for us in the garden! They’re now available again from our online store.

23.01.2022 Sunrise, birches and maples.

23.01.2022 Were not done with the hard frosts yet... The invaluable Hylotelephium (formerly Sedum) Herbstfreude / Autumn Joy; still bolt upright after countless frosty mornings.

23.01.2022 The magical metallic blue of Eryngium bourgatii, one of my absolute summertime favourites. Id grow it for the foliage alone... but dont have to, as check out those flowers! Its now available on our online store: wychwood.garden

23.01.2022 Woodland sunrise.

22.01.2022 Viola odorata Rosea. An amazingly fragrant pink form of this classic evergreen perennial. Ive been meaning to try candying them for a few years now, but havent got around to it... Theyre always flowering during late winter, the busiest period for us in the garden! Theyre now available again from our online store.

22.01.2022 Foliage friends. The wonderful Pakistani native Lindelofia longiflora (now available from our online store) hanging out with Euprhobia Fens Ruby. Both make great contributions to the garden in the foliage department, but Lindelofia backs it up with incredible, true blue flowers (pictured here from earlier in the season).

22.01.2022 A break from the freezing, horizontal rain.

21.01.2022 This morning in our white birch woodland. North Americas answer to the silver birch, these guys dont thrive in hot and dry locations. However, theyre a wonderful tree to grow if your conditions are right.

20.01.2022 Sunrise through the hot bed...

19.01.2022 For those looking for fresh quinces, were now selling them, as well as a range of edible plants, on our website (the link is in our bio). I dont think there is any smell in the kitchen better than that of quinces cooking on the stove - its the smell of autumn. Well, that and rotting leaves, I guess...?

18.01.2022 Just when the threat of that late-summer tired look looms large, in comes Allium carinatum subsp. pulchellum, all pluck and

17.01.2022 Clematis napaulensis. Native to forests in Northern India and South West China at around 2000m. This beautiful winter-flowering climber requires almost no attention and proves there is a Clematis for every season in the garden! If you would like to join the waitlist, head to our website and well notify you when its in stock.

17.01.2022 We’re not done with the hard frosts yet... The invaluable Hylotelephium (formerly Sedum) Herbstfreude / Autumn Joy; still bolt upright after countless frosty mornings.

17.01.2022 The very beautiful Fritillaria pyrenaica. Grown from seed and proving to be quite easy in the garden.

16.01.2022 I know we’re late to the party with this sentiment, but as former Melbournians our hearts absolutely go out to everyone up there dealing with COVID and lockdowns. We just wanted to say we think what you’re doing is amazing. As a token of our appreciation for how hard you’re battling to get this jerk under control we’ve made postage free for all Victorians for the next 7 days. It’s not much, I know, but hopefully it’s something. Keep fighting, you’re doing an awesome job!

16.01.2022 Symphyotrichum Calliope (formally Aster) at its autumn blockbuster best. A totally reliable cultivar with huge, red-centred lilac flowers and striking near-black stems. Its now available at our inline store - the link is in our bio.

15.01.2022 A curious little spring-flowering woodlander: Arisarum proboscideum, or the mouse plant. Native to the Apennine woodlands in Northern Italy, each flower looks like a tiny, long-tailed mouse diving for cover. Now available from our online store. *Edit* no, this is not the very vigorous species Arisarum vulgare, but a much better behaved relative.

15.01.2022 The red hot stems stems of Euphorbia griffithii Fireglow impatiently awaiting spring. Hate to break it to you but youve got some left to wait, buddy.

15.01.2022 Arguably the most impressive of the blue Pulmonarias: ‘Blue Ensign’. Forms a carpet of near-Gentian blue flowers in our woodland as spring approaches. It’s now available from our online store, along with a bunch of other new plants.

13.01.2022 Arboretum Amanita...

13.01.2022 A beautiful misty morning. I’ve always assumed the wonderful strappy foliage here is a Hemerocallis (daylily), possibly H. fulva? It has never flowered for me, but the foliage is such a winner that I don’t much care...

12.01.2022 The magnificent Cardiocrinum giganteum var. yunnanense doing its thing. Often a bit shorter than C. giganteum but has lovely purple-flushed foliage in early spring to make up for it. We’ll have this guy for sale hopefully next year.

12.01.2022 In full spring! Wychwood will be reopening on Friday 20th November. Our hours are Friday-Monday 10-4. Hope to see you soon!

10.01.2022 The gorgeous, powder-blue foliage of sea kale (Crambe maritima) beginning to emerge. Native to the beaches of England, this reliably perennial species of kale is perfect for the kitchen garden, but easily beautiful enough to sneak into the garden elsewhere! Its available from our website.

10.01.2022 Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’, an oldie but goodie. This fast growing hybrid (by Epimedium standards!) makes for an invaluable weed-suppressing ground cover for a partly shady spot. It’s now available from our website.

10.01.2022 Always our first Lilium to flower, L. pomponium. Native to the Maritime Alps in France and Italy, it’s the harbinger of Lilium season; one of my favourite periods in our garden. We’ve got this guy and other Liliums for sale in the nursery, which is open 10-4 Friday to Monday. #wychwoodtasmania #wychwood #Wychwoodgarden #lilium #bulb #tasmania #gardeningaustralia #gardensofinstagram #rareplants #perennialgarden #gardensofinstagram #inmygarden @wychwoodtasmania

09.01.2022 Some early spring hero foliage pics. Erythronium revolutum, Veratrum nigrum and Dicentra ‘Langtrees’.

08.01.2022 Artemisia ludoviciana Valerie Finnis still looking fresh well into April (and now available from our online store - link in our bio). Its a wonderful foliage plant with impossibly lunar white young growth.

08.01.2022 The insanely elegant Fritillaria meleagris stealing the show, as it does every year. As beautiful as they are easy to grow, as far as Fritillarias go! They’ll be back in stock later in spring when they‘re dormant, but if you jump on the waitilist we’ll let you know when they’re ready to order.

07.01.2022 Clear cold mornings.

07.01.2022 On the road to Wychwood...

06.01.2022 Anemone x seemanii. I know Im kind of cheating by posting pics of spring-flowering plants now... but if now isnt the time to be looking wishfully to the future, when is?? Anyway, every year I live for this delicate wood anemones pure, buttery-yellow flowers in early spring. Its effortlessly elegant and carefree and now available at our online store - and now is the best time plant your spring-flowerers! The link is in our bio.

05.01.2022 Hazy valley sunsets...

05.01.2022 Adios autumn...

04.01.2022 One of the greatest of low-maintenance grasses, the New Zealand native Anemanthele lessoniana dominating this (very) early spring scene. Theyre available from our website.

04.01.2022 Anemone nemorosa Bracteata doing its spring thing. This particularly beautiful form of wood Anemone was discovered in the woods surrounding Hamburg in Germany. Its bright white flowers add vibrancy to several shady spots in our garden. Its now available from our online store.

04.01.2022 The indispensable Phlomis russeliana in this messy and beautiful time of year. Its about time to cut it all back now.

03.01.2022 Eranthis hyemalis. The very definition of diminutive (read: bloody tiny!). Despite being all of 5cms tall this winter-flowering European woodlander packs such a punch. Its acid yellow flowers appear almost luminescent on these dull winter days.

03.01.2022 All from the same Fothergilla major bush. Why do one, when you can do all of the colours!

03.01.2022 A trick of the light. Ligularia dentata at its vibrant, mid-summer best. We grow this East Asian native mainly for its enormous foliage, which resemble tractor seats! Weve got some large specimens now available from our online store, which would make a great addition to any partly shaded and moist spot.

02.01.2022 New Zealand yams (Oxalis tuberosa) are now available from our online store. This colourful addition to the kitchen garden makes for the perfect potato substitute, whether boiled, baked, grilled or fried. They dont require peeling and can be used fresh, thinly sliced in salads for a bit of a lemony zing. Reliable and very easy to grow. Also, rich in a bunch of stuff that is good for your health!

02.01.2022 Vitis coignetiae. Every year this extraordinary climber lights up our entire garden. It is, without a doubt, my favourite plant in autumn. Its available from our store now and were very happy we can now share it with you guys! Im expecting to sell out pretty quick... so if youre keen but miss out, join the waitlist on our site and well get in touch when its back in stock.

01.01.2022 The beautiful variegation of Acorus gramineus Ogon. This dwarf, grass-like Japanese native grows equally well in both sun and shade if given adequate moisture. Now available from our online store.
