18.01.2022 Kennett River and Wye River residents may see or smell smoke from a planned burn being ignited at Kennett River today. Forest Fire Management Victoria and Count...ry Fire Authority crews will carry out the 20-hectare planned burn on Kennett Road to reduce bushfire risk to the township. Traffic management will be in place on Kennett Road and Cassidy Drive. Motorists are urged to drive to conditions and be aware of crews working in the area. We understand that smoke from planned burns can cause concern, and encourage those who are sensitive to smoke to remain indoors and keep windows closed until the smoke passes. During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we are working closely with the Department of Health and Environment Protection Authority on the planned burning program to ensure we keep the smoke impacts as low as practically possible. Under the current public health advice, our planned burning program can continue for now. If that advice changes, we will make any adjustments necessary in consultation with Victorian Department of Health, Country Fire Authority (CFA), Environment Protection Authority Victoria and Vic Emergency. Our crews are adhering to appropriate physical distancing and hygiene requirements to ensure we can safely continue our operations across the state. We conduct burns based on the conditions rather than the seasons, which can see us burning at any time throughout the year, at the right time to achieve the best ecological outcomes. To find out when and where planned burns are happening near you go to www.vic.gov.au/plannedburns or call 1800 226 226.

15.01.2022 Colac Otway Shire holiday home owners who are unable to travel due to COVID restrictions are encouraged to use local contractors to help clean-up their properties during these challenging times. While we can’t grant exemptions to State Government restrictions, Colac Otway is fortunate to have experienced high rainfall recently and more rain is forecast, minimising our current fire risk. If property owners want to prepare for summer ahead of time, there are local contractors w...ho can slash and mow grass, trim gardens and clean gutters, which will take care of any maintenance concerns and help the local economy. To assist property owners, local contractors can list their business details, including the area they provide services and capabilities, on the Colac Otway Business Directory at https://www.colacotway.vic.gov.au//Community-Business-Dire Please share this advice with Melbourne friends and family who own properties in Colac Otway, and let’s look forward to the time when it’s safe for them to visit again! https://www.colacotway.vic.gov.au//Maintenance-options-for
