11.01.2022 We are glad to introduce a new service at Wynnum Medical Centre: PRP PRP is Platelet-Rich Plasma therapy. Although an emerging technology and technique in medicine, it has been used since the mid-1990s in dental and oral surgery and to aid in soft tissue recovery following plastic surgery. What is PRP therapy used for?... Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, uses injections of a concentration of a patients own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. In this way, PRP injections use each individual patients own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems. What are the benefits of PRP? Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a safe, effective, and innovative treatment option for joint pain, tendon injuries, and back problems. The advantages of PRP therapy compared to other procedures include reduced downtime and improved outcomes. How long does it take for PRP to work? PRP offers no instant pain relief, but regenerates healthy tissue which takes a number of weeks. Most patients are able to return to work the day following the procedure unless they are 1 in 10 that has a post-injection flare and it that situation you may need an extra day off work. Can PRP help arthritis? Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy for Arthritis. ... Although not considered standard practice, a growing number of people are turning to PRP injections to treat an expanding list of orthopedic conditions, including osteoarthritis. It is most commonly used for knee osteoarthritis, but may be used on other joints as well. Is PRP treatment safe? Overall, PRP is an especially safe treatment option with no risk of allergic reaction because it is your own blood. However, anytime a needle is placed in the body, there is a risk of infection, bleeding, and nerve damage. ... Other risks depend on the area being treated. What are the side effects of a PRP injection? Doctors use PRP to encourage healing and to reduce inflammation. A doctor doing a PRP injection will first draw blood from the person being treated. Side effects can include mild nausea, passing out and dizziness. Do PRP injections really work? PRP injections work differently from cortisone injections. ... Often, cortisone shots provide pain relief until the patient has surgery. PRP therapy is administered to promote healing and prevent further joint and soft-tissue damage. A successful PRP treatment can eliminate the need for surgery.
