25.01.2022 CAQ GC Open Singles Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 July There were 30 players from 11 clubs entered for this event with players allocated into 4 blocks of 8 with blocks A&B played at Wynnum and blocks C&D played at Toombul on the Saturday. On the Sunday, the top 4 in each block competed in the Championship finals played at Wynnum for the Pam Shepherd Trophy, with the remainder competing for the Pam Shepherd Plate at Toombul. And although heavy rain had been forecast for Sunday aft...ernoon, play was completed in the dry, much to everyones relief. There were many close fought games in the finals with several being decided at the final hoop or being timed out, a good example being the semi-final between Gordon Giles and Graham McLean that was a very tense battle with Gordon coming out on top 6-5. In the other semi-final Geoff Jamieson proved too strong for Richard Pickvance winning 10-6. In the Championship final between Gordon Giles and Geoff Jamieson, Gordon got off to a good start with an early lead and although Geoff fought back to almost draw level, Gordon held on to win 10-7 and take out the Pam Shepherd Trophy. Meanwhile at Toombul, 14 players competed in 2 blocks of 7 players, with the winner from each block, Meagan Stuart (Eildon) and Hisham Elkomy (Southport) playing in the final for the Plate. This was another close fought game with Meagan winning 7-6 to secure the Pam Shepherd Plate. CAQ Events Coordinator Geraldine Trivett thanked Wynnum CC for hosting the finals and the venue manager Bruce Fleming for keeping everything on track; referees Liz Fleming, Cloreen van der Sluis, Sue Green and Deirdre Giles for their great work; hoop setter Bruce Fleming; and of course our wonderful kitchen helpers who provided refreshments for players (and spectators) throughout the day. Geraldine then introduced Pam Shepherd to present the trophies, Pam being one of the leading figures responsible for the development and promotion of Golf Croquet in Queensland. The winners of each of the finals being: Championship W Geraldine Trivett (r/u Kevin Melksham) Championship Y Robert Martin (r/u George Oliver) Championship Z Peter Nicholson (r/u Geoff Hull) Championship X & Pam Shepherd Trophy Gordon Giles (r/u Geoff Jamieson) Article written by Publicity Officer Mike Fordyce See more

24.01.2022 Our last event for 2019 was the Gala Day on Thursday. 24 players had entered. Unfortunately 2 players were unable to attend, due to illness, so Tournament Manager Gordon had to draft in a couple of members who had come to help with hoop setting and kitchen duties, to fill the places. Thanks to Bruce and Joan for being so willing to help out. The weather was perfect and everyone had a most enjoyable day. The final was played between Graeme Price (Wynnum) and partner Judy Caughley (Headland Buderim) against Dorothy Cutcliffe (Wynnum) and Arch Morrison (Headland Buderim), with Graeme and Judy coming out on top in a hard fought game. It was pleasing to see several of our newer members participating in what was their first competition event, and enjoying the experience.

24.01.2022 First two courts Scarified! Liz and Bruce had a big 5 hour clean up but it was well worth the big effort. Next two courts due for work on 4th November. Wynnum can look forward to courts in excellent condition over summer.

23.01.2022 Pennants at Wynnum today was against East Brisbane club, but only one court was available due to the excessive amount of water on the grass. Hopefully the next pennant day will be better.

23.01.2022 Our club treasurer John was delighted with today's effort. Our very generous members have helped to contribute $101 from recycled cans and bottles from today's delivery, the best ever! Well done to you all, keep bringing your bags and boxes of cans and bottles each week, as every little bit helps.

22.01.2022 The annual CAQ Golf Croquet Open Doubles competition was held at Wynnum Croquet club as a 2 day event over Saturday and Sunday 3rd & 4th October. There were 26 players making 13 pairs playing a Round Robin block in timed 1 hour games. The result was close, but the winners were Richard Pickvance and Gordon Giles. Runners up were Hisham Elkomy and Beryl Turner. Congratulations to you all. Greg Kerswell presented the winners with the shield and their medals. Thanks must go to the Tournament Manager, Referees, hoop setters, those who erected gazebos tables and chairs and also the caterers. Well done everyone, it was a great weekend.

21.01.2022 The Bayside Cup was held yesterday, another very successful tournament at Wynnum, with players from the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and various Brisbane clubs. There were 32 competitors, 2 blocks of 8 pairs. They all enjoyed our hospitality with Aina and Wendy providing some delicious food throughout the day. It was an exciting all Wynnum final as Gordon Giles & Richard Pickvance played off against fellow club members Roy & Ann Brooks. At the end of a long day of play it wa...s Gordon & Richard who won the event and lifted the trophy. We Congratulate the Bayside Cup winners. We would like to recognize and thank Michelle, from Go See Touring travel agency (our sponsors for the event) who presented the trophy and awards.

21.01.2022 Wynnum Croquet Club Mixed Doubles Championship 2020 Play commenced at 8am Sunday 22 November 2020 for our final club competition, the GC Mixed Doubles. 6 doubles pairs nominated so it was a round robin draw with 5 X 45 mins games played by each pair. There was no nominated referee as three of the competitors were experienced referees, as were the other competitors. It was encouraging to see that two members Anna and Les Dawson (relatively new to competition) took up the ch...allenge to compete. It was a tight contest. Karen Meates and Richard Pickvance had won 5 games, as did Deirdre and Gordon Giles, so it came down to who had won the most net hoops. The doubles champions were Karen Meates and Richard Pickvance having won 14 net hoops to Deirdre and Gordon's 9 net hoops. Well done! Our archivist Phyllis Pledger was there, as usual, to photograph the winners and the group of players, and Aina Johns managed the event. Thanks to all who participated.

19.01.2022 The CAQ Qld Womens Championship (singles, level play) was a 2 day event held at Wynnum this weekend. Players covered areas from the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and also Brisbane regions. There were 15 players in 2 blocks competing for 2 prizes. The top 2 women played off for The Fleming Trophy and the runners up played for the C Donley Plate. The competition at this level was incredibly high with very interesting tactics used in all games. The winner of the 2020 Flemin...g Trophy was Beryl Turner, the runner up was Geraldine Trivett. The Donley Plate was won by Helen Rillie, the runner up was Val Knigge. We were very lucky to have a bevy of referees to cover the two days play and we thank them all for their valuable time. Thanks must also go to the wonderful managers, organisers and all their helpers. As we all know, it takes a small army of volunteers to get a major championship organised and we thank them all.

17.01.2022 Seven members competed in the Club GC Singles Championship on Sunday. The tournament was played as a Round Robin with one Block, so each player had a bye and contested six games. At the end of the round, the top four players qualified for the semi-finals. Geoff Hull (1st) played John van Barneveld (4th) while Richard Pickvance (2nd) played Gordon Giles (3rd). The date for the final, between Geoff Hull and Gordon Giles, will be confirmed shortly. Well done to all contestants - you all played very well and it was lovely to see the sportsmanship and friendship throughout the day. Group photo shows players, referee and "sustenance providers". Diane Lovi missed the group photo however she was captured individually..

17.01.2022 The Metropolitan Cup was held at Wynnum today under glorious skies and with a full compliment of players. It was a doubles match, level play. There were some extremely close games throughout the day with fierce competition, which kept Referee Liz very busy. We were extremely lucky to have Therese Prebble, Manager of Metropolitan Funerals with us to present the winners with a wonderful trophy and cash prize money. Thanks for your continued support and generosity Therese. The... winners were - 1st - Bob Martin and Rino Parella; 2nd - Beryl Turner and Hisham Elkomy; 3rd Ian & Michelle Reed. Congratulations to the winners and well done to all other competitors. It was a very successful day and we look forward to seeing you again on the courts in the next competition.

17.01.2022 The ACA GC Gold and Silver Medal is a prestigious event held each year in early September, prior to the Interstate Shield. In each State, players compete for the Bronze Medal, and the winner goes forward to compete against the Bronze Medal winners from the other five States. In July, Gordon Giles succeeded in winning the Queensland event, and advanced to the Australian Medal Event, held at Cairnlea in Victoria from 4 - 6th September. Playing five of the best players in Austra...lia, Gordon needed to play better croquet than he has ever played before, and applied himself to the task with his true fighting spirit. Matches were "best of three untimed games and he won four of his five matches, only losing to the eventual winner, Peter Landrebe from NSW. Congratulations on winning the Silver Medal Gordon, from all the members of Wynnum Croquet Club - a magnificent effort. See more

16.01.2022 Were very proud of our Pennants team, who succeeded in winning their two matches on Sunday. First match of the day was against a spirited Toombul team and we were fortunate to win 4 games to 2. Next we tackled Merthyr who proved to be tough competition. At the end of the match the scores were equal - 3 games all, however we won on net hoops, 30 to 25. Thanks to Toombul for hosting a very pleasant day, and to the supporters who turned up to cheer our players on.

16.01.2022 Wynnum turned on perfect weather over 3 days for the ACA Bronze Medal competition. The 8 players were vying for the honour of competing for the Gold or Silver medals in Victoria in September. The competitors were Gordon Giles,Ross Rillie, Dennis Green, Lawrie Simpson, Peter Nicholson, Geoff Hull, Graham McLean and Ron Schodel. It was a best of 3 event over 3 days, with the winner being Gordon Giles (Wynnum) with 13 games. Dennis Green (Bribie) came in 2nd and Lawrie Simpson ...(Eildon) came 3rd. Congratulations to the winner Gordon, we all look forward to watching you represent Queensland in September. We again have to thank the wonderful volunteers who include the tournament manager, hoop setters, line markers, referees, caterers and supporters.

16.01.2022 A new croquet app has been developed in England which calculates free turns (bisques) for both Golf croquet and Association. The app is designed for iPhones/iPads only at this stage, but an Android version won't be far behind. We will let you know when that is available. In the meantime, we highly recommend that you to download this app and use it whenever free turns are required in your game. ... Maybe you could get some bisque calculating practice in before your next competition.

16.01.2022 Very proud of Wynnum club member Richard Pickvance for his selection in the Qld State team as a non-travelling reserve. Congratulations Richard, well done.

15.01.2022 The inaugural Shawn & Kym Real Estate Invitational Mixed Doubles competition was held on Sunday 28th July at Wynnum Croquet Club with a full complement of 32 players under clear blue skies, on fast courts with well set hoops. The handicaps provided extra turns and proved testing for the high ranked players. As always thanks must go to those members who come to the club before daylight to set the courts up for the event, get all draw preparations organized, the Tournament M...anager, the referees, and of course all the entrants, because without them there would be no event. Richard Pickvance and his partner Mary McMahon won the final game 6-3 over Dianne Lovi and John Van Barneveld during a 1 hour game. Congratulations to all winners. We look forward to continuing our friendship with our new sponsor Shawn & Kym Real Estate and holding this prestigious event again next year. See more

14.01.2022 Well at last the final of the Club Singles Handicap Championship was played this morning between Karen Meates and John van Barneveld. The game was timed to 1 hour and the winner was KAREN MEATES who won 6-2. ... Special thanks go to Bruce for setting the court up to enable this final to be played, and to Liz for being the referee for the match. It was very much appreciated.

12.01.2022 Wow,what a team, we are so very proud of this awesome foursome who fought it out in the finals of the Pam Shepherd Headland Cup at Headland Buderim on Sunday. Many different clubs were represented among the 32 players. It was Wynnum players John Van Barneveld and Dianne Lovi who won this event 4-2 over team mates Gordon & Deirdre Giles in fading light, when it got to the stage where it was hard to see the hoops at the other end of the court. Referee Cloreen from Nambour c...lub officiated the match. It was a hard fought battle and a pleasure to watch the tactics and free turns being played. The Pam Shepherd Cup was presented to John & Di by Pam Shepherd herself, along with medals, cash and a 6 pack of wine. The runners up also received cash and wine. Congratulations to the team, you all played hard and got the results! Thanks must go to the Headland Buderim club, and the swag of volunteers who always come up trumps in a big event, including the court setters, referees, caterers, Tournament Manager, scorers and many others. 12.01.2022 Our annual club Championship Trophy Presentation and Christmas party was held in the clubhouse on Saturday afternoon. Along with members and their partners were invited guests who included our sponsors and our club patron Peter Cumming. The spread of delicious food on the buffet was overwhelming, organised very well by our new Providore Ann and her band of helpers, catering for almost 50 people. Between courses we were all suitably entertained by Aina and her Christmas Qui...z. This is when we all realise that we dont know as much as we thought about Christmas! President Liz then presented the club trophies and medals to the winners of events which had been held throughout the year. It has been a very busy croquet calendar with lots of tournaments, both within our club and also interclub events. Some of our members have even travelled interstate to bring back medals. It is always a privilege to play against these top players and we congratulate them all. We all look forward to an exciting 2020 full of more competitions, gala days and regular club days. If anyone is interested in learning how to play any of the codes of croquet - the game we all love so much - then give our club Secretary Bruce a call on 0419 650 304 for more information.

11.01.2022 ACA GC Open Doubles & Singles Championship, Cairnlea Victoria Sat 4 to Sun 12 May Wynnum CC was well represented at this major event as Deirdre Giles reports: Armed with a good supply of winter woollies and thermal undies, ten Queensland croquet players braved the cold Melbourne weather in early May to participate in the ACA Open Doubles and Singles tournaments. Weather for the Doubles was cool but fine. Wynnum players Bruce Fleming and Gordon Giles performed well, finish...ing in 7th place overall. Deirdre partnered Rosemary Newsham (Stephens) while Liz Fleming made an enormous difference to the standard of refereeing. All four players in the Final match were Victorian, and it was a real cracker, lasting for eight and a half hours. The match was a Best of Five games, and went down to the 13th hoop on the 5th game with John van der Touw & Richard Parks just getting over Brian Rowe & Owen Dickinson. Spectators were all in the clubhouse staying out of the cold, and enjoying the wonderful spectacle. The atmosphere was electric. Liz and Bruce must have known more than the rest of us, as they left on the Wednesday, and immediately afterwards the weather turned even colder and we all discovered why Cairnlea is fondly known as "Pleurisy Plains". Newly qualified referee Deirdre was asked to help out with some refereeing for the Singles tournament. And as the Tournament Managers assistant was unable to be there due to family illness, Deirdre also stepped into that role entering the results into Croquet Scores and keeping the players on track. Over the next five days she spent her time between the courts and the office - conveniently there were always some results to be entered when the rain was at its worst!! The Final of the Singles was another riveting affair, with Alison Sharpe from NSW playing Kevin Beard from Victoria. Another Best of 5-game match went to 7:5 in the fifth game. Over the ten days, we witnessed some truly wonderful croquet, and enjoyed the social interaction too. See more

06.01.2022 Saturday 12th December we held our annual Christmas party and Trophy Presentation. Our Honoured guests included club Patron Cr Peter Cumming and Sandra & Ron Blinco (daughter of Joyce Short, former president and club champion). Tables were re-arranged and decorated, then members took their place for Christmas lunch. This was a gastronomic delight organised by our club Providore Ann Brooks, under very strict CoVid food handling guidelines. It was a credit to her and fellow... kitchen staff arranging individual sealed plates of pre-ordered salads. Big thanks also to all the guys who manned the BBQ. Trophy presentations were then held with the 2020 club winners being Gordon Giles winner of Metropolitan Golf Croquet Singles Dianne Lovi winner of Golf Croquet Handicap Singles Karen Meates winner of the Dell Nichol Ladies Golf croquet handicap singles, shield presented by Dell Nichol. This certainly caused lots of laughter. Several games of croquet were played after lunch, making sure that the courts were packed away before the afternoon storm. It was another great day, thanks to all those hardworking members who do so much for fellow members. It really is appreciated. See more

06.01.2022 Golf 6 and Under TIC held at Bribie Island on the 15th & 16th June 2019 was a Round Robin, 2 day event, with 12 players. Wynnum featured extremely well in the results with Gordon Giles winning the trophy with 10 wins and 1 loss & 30 net hoops. Geoff Hull came in as runner up with 8 wins, 3 losses & 17 net hoops. ... 04.01.2022 A HUGE thank you to WYNNUM TENNIS CLUB for their very generous support of our club in offering us their water squeegees for our major competition. Without their help this event would not have gone ahead. A Golf Croquet Mixed Doubles Handicap competition, sponsored by SHAWN & KYM REAL ESTATE was held on Sunday 26th July at Wynnum Croquet club. Setting up the courts in the dark amidst torrential rain was cause of concern for all, helpers and players alike. The courts were c...overed in water and things looked very grim until the Wynnum Tennis Club very kindly offered their squeegees to remove the water from the courts. It took 8 people to constantly roll the playing surfaces to enable the competition to go ahead. Around 9am the skies cleared and play began, with 8 teams competing, 32 players in all, double banked on all courts. As it was a handicap event, there were lots a bisques (free turns) handed out by a number of doubles pairs. This always levels the play and often gives unexpected results. The winners of the event were Geoff Hull and Geraldine Trivett with a score of 7-5 over Val Knigge and Glenn Wran. It was fantastic to have our sponsors Shawn & Kym there to present the trophy and medals. George Nakhoul and Esme Lucas-Havens won the consolation with a score of 7-3. An event of this size would never happen without the support of volunteers, including Tournament Managers, referees, hoop setters, and catering ladies. A huge thank you to you all. We certainly appreciate your never ending hard work. Thanks must also go to Jenny Pickvance who provided the most amazing raffle prizes, we hope she knows those very lucky recipients were very grateful. The day wrapped up just in time before a late storm rolled through. Overall it was considered a very successful event. See more

04.01.2022 Twin Rivers Challenge 25 October 2020 The Twin Rivers Challenge was finally played in October after being much delayed by the advent of Covid 19. 10 players from Wynnum Croquet Club challenged 10 players from Twin Waters Croquet Club for the honour of having their club name engraved on a shiny silvery platter. 02.01.2022 The weather conditions were cooler, which made playing quite comfortable. Thankfully the forecast of rain and showers did not eventuate when the Twin Rivers Challenge was held at our club on Sunday 17th May, with a full compliment of players. Congratulations to all players, especially the Wynnum Team who retain this prestigious award. We would like to acknowledge three new club members who entered their first competition, Carol, Graham and Trevor. It was great to see them on... the courts and doing so well, with some tremendous shots being played and long hoops being run. Well done to you all. We look forward to watching you progress into pennants and in future comps. It is always great to welcome our friends from Twin Rivers, who always put up a good fight on the courts. We would like to thank Peter and his Team, and we look forward to the Challenge, playing at their club, on their new courts, next year. No event is ever successful without the dedicated help of volunteers who arrive before sun up to set courts and hoops, those who configure score sheets/cards/handicaps/time clocks & pegs, green-keepers, line markers, our referees and caterers, we thank you all for a great day and for making it such a success. Huge thanks must go to Tournament Manager and Referee Deirdre Giles, who runs and organizes great competitions. Thanks Dee. Your work and dedication is certainly appreciated.
