25.01.2022 The scene is set...you look back to that workshop 7 years ago where you wrote down your heart's desires, you found the words that defined what your true purpose is, you created the picture of your ideal life. You are living that life right now. You took the steps you knew you had to take to live out your life purpose. The road has been rich with experience, a life so full of love, joy and connection. Life becomes bigger and more beautiful day by day. You live a fulfilled life and at the end you have no regrets. And it all started with that workshop you did 6 March 2020. https://www.facebook.com/events/177876080227853/

23.01.2022 It is now 2 months in to the new year ... the year we hoped would be different. For many of us though it still seems to be running on the same lines. Covid is h...ere, our friends and family are still far away, and then there's the random hospital admissions of those near and dear to me. The usual daily obstacles of living life are still there. So how do we deal with it? I don't mean the practical logistics. I mean, how do we find happiness in all this difficulty? First up is to examine, with kindness, our own attitudes. When are we cool with the ebb and flow and when are we losing our patience? This will outline our areas where we cope well and where we don't. We are social beings. When we are coping we have the presence to be there for others which is great. When we are not coping we have a choice to 'call in' the presence of others. Who can we ask for support? What would we like? A good chat? A massive distraction? A wordless hug? That's enough food for thought for now. Next post I'll cover what comes up for us when we are asking for support. Please comment below and let me know your experience.

22.01.2022 Stuck with generic descriptions like happy and sad? To get students beyond simple words such as happy and sad is a challenge. This wheel is a useful tool to generate more specific descriptions. Image from The Writer's Circle.

20.01.2022 Worried about teaching your kids at home for a while? Here's some ideas. 1. Make it a teaching exchange. You teach each other stuff you don't know but the other one does. 2. Have a learning race! Choose a question and go googling. First one wins. 3. Same as 2. but make it about the how and why of a topic.... Image credit: Chloe!

10.01.2022 Because teenagers often feel depressed .... so the English reading list includes uplifting classics like: 1984, Brave New World, The Quiet American, The Great G...atsby, Hamlet, Macbeth and Lord of the Flies. While all worthy works in their own way, we shouldn't wonder that many students are not leaping to turn each page. How about we gave the year 12s in particular texts that truly inspired them, gave them hope for the future? If we teach the classics because classics are considered good what exactly are we measuring this by? I'd rather measure the impact on students of a text, be it classic or modern, not by their essay but by how it expanded their horizons and transformed their thinking in a beneficial way. That's what some books can do. Let's read them at school instead and let's hear from students what it means to them. See more

06.01.2022 I've seen some media saying parents are at breaking point with home schooling. If that is you, please know that you don't have to complete all the work set by schools during this time. You can only do what is reasonable in your circumstances. Everyone has different issues with this. Please give yourself some credit for whatever you get done with your children. Most importantly, some say pick your battles. But I say, give yourselves time to adjust. Don't pick any battles rig...ht now. Just try to build love and understanding within your family. Without that, this would be hell. Go gently. See more
06.01.2022 When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams. But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction... of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike. This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness. For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognise their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people. Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface. Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: to be accepted!! If you choose, please copy and paste this in honour of all children who are deemed "different". Our world would be far less beautiful without them.
06.01.2022 We are approaching the final countdown. From next week all students in Queensland will be back at school. For all the parents who have faced the challenge of home schooling this might come as a relief. Not everyone is celebrating the idea though. If your child isn't feeling keen, that's ok. If you as a parent are worried about sending your child back, that's ok. Give yourself and your child time to get used to returning. If you need to stay home for a bit longer, stay home. As a parent you are in the best place to judge what your child needs. In the bigger scheme of things there is no 'right' timeline. So take a breath, and do what's right for you and your family.
06.01.2022 Which play is being referenced here? Extra points if you are in year 12. Hint: it is super relevant for external exam.
04.01.2022 I am so happy to say this amazing person is a past student of Tamara's Tuition. We had some pivotal conversations back when he was a senior high school student around his future choices. He wasn't thinking of uni at all. I suggested QUT and explained some ways of getting in. He chose to go to uni and make a contribution as a paramedic.
03.01.2022 Photo says it all. Blessed to live in Wynnum and have such a beautiful cohort of students this year. We made it!!
01.01.2022 As a teacher and tutor and mum of one ADHD and one T1D... I just want to send encouragement to all the new home schoolers. Not easy at all. One step at a time. If you haven't lost your cool for a whole day you're doing very well. At the end of each day I advise you to list anything that anyone learnt today and give yourselves as parents some positive self talk. For example: 'You survived. You did well. It was difficult and you managed to do some good things like...' 'You now... have even more empathy for the teachers, what an eye opener...' 'You are doing the best you can, and good on you...' 01.01.2022 Year 12s are in the final stretch with exams in 3 weeks. We acknowledge all their hard work in trying circumstances. For a number of reasons the Queensland 2020 cohort will not receive the scores they may have. What's not on their certificate (but should be) is all the patience, grit, resilience and determination to make the most of a difficult time. Even with a lower score, all is not lost. There are many pathways to university if that's the dream. Just keep asking till you hear the solution. For those not heading to further education, the world is a place where you make a difference. You matter, no matter what you do. Never underestimate the power of kindness and doing your job well. It makes the world go round.
