25.01.2022 Putting public art in Maroondah on the map Watch and listen to the participants in the Render - Art Action against Grafitti project. Render was a community art project with young people in the Croydon area. Supported by Maroondah City Council, artist Matt Thompson worked with seven young local artists from Maroondah to deliver works that enhance our public spaces. The project was funded through a Department of Justice - Graffiti Prevention grant. https://www.youtube.com/...watch?v=pv6LlqDCEL4&t=57s Check out the public art map on our website showing public artwork locations so you can easily identify works of interest that are close to where you live. https://www.maroondah.vic.gov.au///Public-Art-in-Maroondah See more

16.01.2022 Putting public art on the map in Maroondah Here's a tiny peak into the amount of research, thought and creativity that goes into the development of a public artwork. The image below is part of the concept design brief submitted by Roger Archbold and Andy Drewitt that resulted in The Fruit Thief - off Main Street, Croydon. Part of the artist statement reads: The Fruit Thief is an interactive wall mural depicting the wings of a fruit bat. These winged mammals were prevalent ...when large tracts of Croydon were occupied by fruit orchards. The bats play an important ecological role by dispersing seeds and pollen of native Australian plants. Maroondah has a diverse and interesting collection of public art. You can enliven your daily walk and bike ride by visiting a public artwork near you. Check out the public art map on our website showing public artwork locations so you can easily identify works of interest that are close to where you live. https://bit.ly/2F3TBT2 See more
15.01.2022 Putting public art on the map in Croydon The Fruit Thief / Roger Archbold and Andy Drewitt / 2018 Address: Laneway next to ANZ Bank and Bloom Hearing, 109 Main Street, Croydon. Image: Andy Drewitt is The Fruit Thief (Photograph by Roger Archbold) Local Maroondah artists Roger Archbold and Andy Drewitt created this interactive wall mural depicting the wings of a fruit bat. The winged mammals were prevalent when large tracts of Croydon were occupied by fruit orchards. The fru...it bat is native to Australia and plays an important ecological role by dispersing seeds and pollen of native Australian plants.: The wings feature sawtooth edges as a nod to the town’s sawmill, while series of circles within circles represent timber growth rings The internal skeletal structure of the wings represents the arrival of rail to the region Asterisk-shaped tussocks illustrate the native plant Danthonia pallida, a pale grass that inspired the town’s initial name, White Plains A serpentine line illustrates the meandering waterway, Brushy Creek, a camping site for the region’s Indigenous population Patchwork patterns represent farms and market garden plots Geometric squares are indicative of a bird’s-eye view of the Croydon streetscape Tessellated patterns represent a bird’s-eye view of stalls at the once iconic Croydon market. An important design feature of the mural is that its size is perfect to be captured with a phone camera and easily shared on social media. The mural helps to promote Croydon Main Street as an attractive destination. It was commissioned by Croydon Main Street Traders, with the assistance of a Maroondah City Council Arts and Cultural Grant. Maroondah has a diverse and interesting collection of public art. You can enliven your daily walk and bike ride by visiting a public artwork near you. 02.01.2022 In Memory of Krissy Scherlies (6/12/55 to 27/7/20) Many of you who have been part of the Wyreena community for a while, will remember the vibrant and dynamic Krissy. Krissy worked at Wyreena for 17 years in Administration and as the Arts Program Officer. She was also an artist who contributed to many community projects and exhibitions. Krissy left Wyreena in 2012 to move to Newstead and be close to her Son (Armstrong). Sadly, Krissy passed away suddenly on Monday. We send our heartfelt love and sympathies to her family and friends. Krissy will always be remembered as a kind, funny and creative soul.
