19.01.2022 MOON / CAM BOOTS Controlled ankle motion (CAM) or moon boots are an orthotic that we prescribe for physio patients and also fit for patients on referral from GPs and orthopaedic specialists. The aim of wearing a moon boot is to unload the ankle and / or foot by restricting ankle dorsiflexion, in order to promote healing of bony or soft tissues like ligaments. ... There are two types of boot: short and tall. Generally, a tall boot is used for ankle and rear foot injuries, as it is more capable of unloading these regions. A short boot is used for mid and forefoot injuries. Of course, there are exceptions depending on a patients circumstances. Some moon boots also have an inflatable air chamber that hugs the shin and ankle for both greater comfort and potentially greater unloading. We also stock moon boots for young children as well! If you would like us to fit a moon boot for you, or would like more information, visit our website or call us on 07 333 55 222. @ Western Districts Rugby Football Club

14.01.2022 Patellofemoral Joint (PFJ) Pain, defined as pain around or behind the patella is one of the most common knee conditions in runners. This post addresses local factors at the knee that contribute to PFJ pain- its well established that other joints (hip/ankle) have a significant influence in the development of PFJ pain. A 2017 study (cited below), has established that education on symptom management and training load management (avoiding training loads that exceeds the tissues ability to adapt) is the vital component in addressing PFJ pain. Other interventions such as Exercise (3-4 patient specific exercises performed) and/or gait retraining (run softer, 7-10% increase in cadence, avoiding heel strike) are effective in assisting improvement for PFJ pain.

03.01.2022 Sick of completing 100s of repetitions of up fast, slow down traditional eccentric calf exercises? There are many ways that a mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy can be developed that is not touched upon in this post (biomechanics, footwear, muscle strength i.e. soleus etc.). However, recent research now demonstrates that less reps, heavy resistance, isometric holds, slow speed exercises are better (in terms of patient compliance and satisfaction at 12 weeks post injury) than traditional eccentric exercises. They both work clinically in solving your Achilles problem, but why not be happier with your rehab exercises? Summary: For gastroc/soleis raises - Less reps, longer holds, heavier resistance and slow speed
