23.01.2022 REMINDER: NO MEETING TONIGHT . . . Hey rebels! Given that we're back in lockdown and restricted in our activities, we will be putting a pause on regular local group meetings. Don't forget to sign up for the XR Vic People's Assembly on 25 July! And we'll keep the conversation going here, in our XR Darebin Internal Group, on Mattermost, and on the Base. When we see an opportunity to act, we will resume meetings.

22.01.2022 #MeetARebel: Leslie If asked to pinpoint a moment of revelation when I came to understand the climate situation as an emergency, I’d say it was the Darebin Climate Emergency Conference of September 2018. Speakers such as David Spratt, Paul Gilding and Phillip Sutton made it clear that while I hadn’t been paying attention, believing planting trees was enough, we were approaching key tipping points if we had not already passed them. I also picked up a copy of Jane Morton’s bo...ok Don’t Mention the Emergency? I can attest that an invitation to action based on fear does work. It did in my case. After the conference, I felt desperate to act, while being aware that everything I’d so far been involved in had been inadequate in creating major shifts in public opinion or government policy. In the ensuing months, I read about a new group in the UK called Extinction Rebellion who were staging spectacular and creative blockades based on non-violent civil disobedience. Soon after, I heard via DCAN about a local Extinction Rebellion Declaration Day in the Treasury Gardens. I tagged along and liked the group’s creative and harmonious culture. After attending an introductory talk, I became an early member of XR Darebin. I have continued to be active in the movement since those early days.

22.01.2022 Today XR Darebin rebels took to the streets and the screens to support School Strike 4 Climate! We hit up local politicians offices to highlight the danger of a gas-lead recovery. Gas is as dirty as coal. We should be rapidly transitioning to renewable energy, not burning more fossil fuels. Please support SS4C's demands that Covid recovery funds be spent on:... - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee lands rights and care for country - The creation of jobs that fasttrack solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover - Projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030 through expanded public ownership #FundOurFutureNotGas #SS4C #XRDarebin
