23.01.2022 Gypsum: Many properties here on the Gold coast suffer from heavy clay soil. This can affect the growth and health of your trees, plants and even your little flowers and grasses in your garden. Heavy sticky clay soil is difficult to cultivate. The traditional method of breaking down clay is to incorporate lots of organic matter into the soil and to add gypsum, a powdery natural mineral (calcium sulphate). This changes the soil structure from big clods to a fine, easily worke...d texture which makes gardening easier and improves drainage. Gypsum also releases minerals within the soil structure from the clay particles so that they become available for plant nutrition. Key Benefits of Gypsum: 1.Using gypsum to loosen clay soil. Gypsum can provide better soil drainage for your flowers and plants. If you have just moved to a new house and discover in your yard the soil is more like clay and you want to plant a garden, you can use granulated gypsum to condition the soil and make it more suitable for plants to grow in. 2.Gypsum also helps earthworms to increase in your garden soil. These little guys know how to do their job in the ground - they cause the air to circulate through the soil, and to keep the soil aggregated. Once gypsum is applied to the soil surface, earthworms will be more abundant after three years and they will be happy you created this soil liveable just for them 3.Gypsum can also increase any other soil applications to your garden. This includes fertilizer and lime. Lime is frequently added to boost the pH in acid soils. What gypsum does here is that it increases the time it takes for lime to travel beneath the soil so that the soil absorbs the lime more quickly for plants that require acid. DOES MY SOIL NEED GYPSUM? Gypsum is often promoted as a ‘clay breaker’. It does, indeed, improve the structure of sodic clays (clays with more than 5% exchangeable sodium, and low salinity). However, it does little to Improve the structure of clays that are not sodic, soils where there is little or no clay dispersion, or the structure of soils containing only small amounts of clay. I would suggest buying a soil tester kit from Bunning’s or any Nursery and testing your soil before getting started on your gypsum.

20.01.2022 Clumping bamboos are shallow-rooted, and most of them are suited to tropical and subtropical climates. Their growth is limited because each rhizome produced develops into a single culm, or hollow jointed stem, located very close to its mother culm. This makes the plant predictable and genetically non-invasive. There are hundreds of species of clumping bamboos. Google a few, and ask Xavier at Xscape for ideas and suggestions on planting some Bamboo at your place.
19.01.2022 How to have green lush lawns Want to keep the grass greener? The secret to a lush and lovely lawn is simple: proper watering, feeding and mowing. This consistent maintenance routine is also a natural way to defend your lawn against weeds, insects and disease. Here on the Gold Coast the weather can be hot and humid for most of the year and have long spells of drought. This extreme weather can kill a lawn in a few months if not maintained. WATER:...Continue reading

01.01.2022 Time To Seal Your Terra-Cotta Pots Terra-cotta pots give a classic, rustic look to any container garden. They're easy to find and relatively inexpensive, but they have one major flaw: they're porous. Not only does water drain out the bottom hole, but it also wicks through the wall of the pot, removing moisture from the soil at a fast rate. It’s a major problem and the plants suffer quickly if in full sun. Sealing the surface of your terra-cotta pots is the best prevent to mo...isture loss by. You'll reduce your watering duties by a significant amount, helping your plants to stay hydrated and healthy The solution is very simple. There are a range of products that will seal your pots. - Yates Seal a pot. - Pot’n seal - Spay paint (two coats) All of the above can be found at Bunnings, Masters or MITRE 10. I have found that no one real product works the better than the other. As long as the inside of the pot is sealed correctly all methods should work fine. If you don’t want to seal the pot, moving it out of direct sunlight can help slightly, I suggest to my clients than moving their plants to some morning sun is better than leaving them out in afternoon/full sun. If you have any questions about your pots in your garden call Xavier at Xscape. Xscape Gardening and Designs offers a friendly, affordable solution to you and your garden maintenance.
