25.01.2022 Redback spiders are not aggressive, and rarely leave the web. However caution is advised as their bite is very poisonous and potentially fatal for children or the elderly. After a bite, the onset of pain may be delayed for five minutes then increase in intensity. Subsequent symptoms vary but have included: nausea... vomiting abdominal or generalised pain sweating restlessness palpitations weakness muscle spasm fever. Anyone bitten by a redback spider should seek medical attention. Do not bandage the bite but apply iced water and take simple painkillers. An antivenene is available and very effective. Manage redback spiders by learning to recognise their webs and the kinds of places they live. Always take care when gardening or moving objects where redback spiders might be hiding.

24.01.2022 Avoid Rodent Infestations Three species of pest rodents are found in Australia. Rodents are not only disease carriers but are also very destructive, often causing damage to furniture and timber in the home. Electrical fires can be triggered by rodents by their gnawing on cables and wires. Rodents enter buildings seeking, food, warmth and sometimes water. There are three species found in Australia:... Norway Rat Roof Rat Common House mice These rodents go into homes and buildings during the winter months seeking warmth, during and after high rainfall and in very dry conditions. Our man-made structures provide food and ideal breeding conditions for rodents. Rats and mice are more than just a nuisance They cause damage to furniture and timber in the home They trigger electrical fires by gnawing on cables and wires They transfer disease by contaminating food, food preparation areas and utensils through contact with their fur, urine and droppings. Rodents act as carriers for disease Salmonella food poisoning Rat-bite fever - bacterial infection, trichinosis worms, and murine typhus fever Control methods Methods for rodents can be chemical or non-chemical 'Ratsak' options to professional treatments including baiting and sophisticated traps/bait boxes for more stubborn infestations Sanitary handling and destruction of rodents is essential Female rodents have between 4 and 10 litters per year Each litter consists of 5-8 individuals They have exceptionally brief life cycle - as short as 40 and 45 days from birth to sexual maturity. This means infestations can increase rapidly if not detected early Rats and mice often nest in roofs and wall cavities or burrows close to the building Detection can initially be difficult as rats and mice are most active at night The easiest way to detect rodents is evidence of droppings and urine, signs of damage from gnawing, locating nests - usually of paper/rags, and identifying sounds of their activity at night Once rodent activity is detected, the approach to treatment is based on the species present and local conditions Preventative Measures - Rodent Infestations Some tips to prevent rodents from entering your home: Be sure all screens, doors and windows are fitted tightly and that there are no gaps. Check the space under the door as well. Mice can enter even the smallest hole Ensure all food and paper materials are stored in tightly sealed containers Keep shrubs and vegetation trimmed away from the building to remove natural pathways into your premises Ensure all litter, waste foods and garden rubbish are disposed of immediately Seal up any holes on the outside of the building that may allow rodents to enter. This includes points where water, electricity, air conditioning and drainpipes enter your home or building

20.01.2022 Ants are a Hazard to Your Property and Your Health There are more than 8,000 species of ants known to man. Although most nest outside, they often venture indoors on their endless search for food. Many people are unaware of the potential danger of disease transmission that is associated with ants. This is particularly alarming considering ants are most often found in food storage and food preparation areas. Outside Ants' nests are commonly found in the following outdoor areas...: In exposed soil Under the cover of logs In plant cavities In decayed or moist wood Around paths or rockeries Behind or in retaining walls In crevices in brickwork Garbage bins Planters, pots and garden beds Paved areas Lawns Major problem areas: Ants build mounds of soil when making their nests that can smother and kill grass plants Ant tunnels may cause underground roots to dry out, killing the grass and destroying the lawn When ants infest paved areas, they remove the sand between pavers, making the area unstable and unsightly Ants defend insects that damage plants, such as aphids, scales and mealybugs from attack by their natural enemies and then carry the insects to un-infested plants Inside Ants are commonly found in the following indoor areas: Behind skirtings and architraves In wall voids Beneath floors Around foundations Under stoves or cupboards When ants find food, they leave an invisible chemical trail, called 'pherenome', so that other ants can find their way from the nest to the food source. These 'trails' of ants are very persistent even in extended periods of wet weather. Ants can feed on almost anything consumed by humans. Simply killing the ants you see still leaves this scent trail for the others in the nest to follow. Reduce attraction: Stored foods that are attractive to ants should be kept in tightly sealed containers Floor, cupboard and pantry areas should be kept free of crumbs Transfer wastes from the preparation and cleanup of food to a garbage bin Store garbage bins in dry places (not under sinks), empty them often and keep them clean Correct moisture problems Correct ventilation problems Reduce Access: Seal possible entry spots, such as small gaps around doors and windows, along skirting boards, cracks in walls, and gaps around plumbing fixtures Inspect plants or equipment for ants before bringing indoors Health Issues Ant infestations can be a health risk. Ants can carry disease organisms on their body. Ants are capable of spreading dysentery, smallpox and bacteria like salmonella. This is a health threat - knowing where ants scavenge for food. Ant Control Strategies The most effective way to control ant infestations is to use both chemical and non-chemical techniques. Apply simple measures that can reduce the attraction ants have to your home or business.

20.01.2022 Roof rats, as their name suggests, prefer habitats in higher places. They will nest in attics, trees and roof eaves and can become quite a problem, if not controlled. The social structure of roof rats is similar to other rodents. Dominant males usually get the best food, most desirable habitats and the opportunity to mate with most females. Their ability to breed quickly makes control a priority. Roof rats will breed in large numbers and can quickly infest a building, home or... agricultural field. Roof rats prefer fruits and vegetables, and can do extensive damage to citrus crops and sugar cane fields. In addition to fruits, roof rats consume a variety of other foods, such as domestic animal feed and grain. Roof rats, like all rodents, must gnaw constantly to shape their teeth, so often you can find teeth marks where they dwell. They have also been known to chew electrical wires in attics, creating a significant fire hazard. Roof rats are nocturnal feeders and will forage for food over large areas. Roof rats commonly will live at one residence and feed at another residence nearby. They are known to hoard food and will stockpile much more than they can consume. Roof rats are fast moving and excellent climbers. They have an acute sense of hearing and can avoid danger using their senses of hearing and smell. Like other rats, roof rats avoid obstacles placed in their paths. This avoidance makes trapping and baiting difficult, since roof rats will change their foraging paths to go around these unfamiliar objects.

18.01.2022 THE BUZZARD If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet and is entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.... THE BAT The ordinary bat that flies around at night, is a remarkable nimble creature in the air, but it cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. THE BUMBLEBEE A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself. PEOPLE In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up! That’s the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problemjust look up! Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, But faith looks up! Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly

16.01.2022 WOOD ROT Given an adequate supply of moisture and air, most species of timber will succumb to rot, which is actually a form of fungal attack. Rot can cause extensive, irreversible damage to timber, and by the time you see the physical evidence of spongy, damaged wood that falls apart in your hand, the problem is well established. Attack of the spores... You can’t protect timber against airborne fungal spores and when wood starts to rot, the problem is usually well ahead of what you can actually see. What you can control is the availability of moisture, but the rotted timber needs to be cut out and replaced, or treated with poison or preservative. Replacement can be expensive and difficult, especially in complex items of joinery, such as timber windows. It makes sense to try to stop the rot and repair what’s there. I Would suggest a wood hardener. These easily penetrate the timber and bind to the fibres to give them structural integrity and block the uptake of moisture, which causes the rot to become inactive. It’s suitable for rotting windows, cladding and weatherboards, outdoor furniture and fencing, but not for restoring structural timber.

02.01.2022 Cockroaches Cockroaches are a very common and persistent problem in Australian households. They feed on anything from garbage to sewerage. They have the potential to carry germs which can cause disease, such as the bacteria Salmonella. Cockroaches have also been associated with asthma. Cockroaches are nocturnal, so if you're seeing roaches in the daytime, chances are you have a heavy infestation. The three species of cockroach commonly found in Australian homes are the German..., the American and the Australian cockroach. The German cockroach is a very common species and the one usually found inside mainly in kitchens. The adults are comparatively small (about 1.5cm long), tan in colour and often occur in large numbers and tend to aggregate in "nests". The immature (nymphs) have dark markings which make them appear dark brown to black. The German cockroach does not fly and they can live up to 9 months. The American cockroach is reddish-brown and is the largest of the common roaches (up to 4.0cm in length at maturity) and can flyin warmer weather. They live mostly outdoors in drains and sewers and they are found more often in commercial establishments, although houses and apartments frequently become infested. Females can lay up to 50 egg cases each case containing 16 eggs in average. American cockroaches can live up to 2 years. The Australian cockroach is very similar to the American cockroach the only difference that distinguishes them from the American is a clear mark on their wings. They can also live up to 2 years.
