20.01.2022 ITS NOT THE FARRIERS JOB: Farrier - Inspects, trims and shapes horses’ hooves, fits and nails horseshoes. Each person’s idea of WHAT the farriers job includes i...s different to the next person, and often a question I get asked is if I know of a good farrier... One that is patient, replies to calls/messages and arrives on time. We all want that but do we understand what is (and is not) in the farriers job description? What is the farriers job and what is ours, and how can we make ourselves good clients that have and keep good farriers. I see so often the farrier get the blame for unprepared horses, that is purely a lack of the owner’s preparation and responsibility. If things don’t go well, we don’t get to blame our farrier for what is OUR own lack of preparation. That means: preparing our horses to be comfortable physically and mentally, having them stand up and prepared for their feet to be handled, picked up, rasped, held between legs, bring feet back and forth with the same duration that will be expected by our farriers, and all of this done BEFORE the farrier shows up. Not just his feet picked up and put down, with little asked of the horse. If our horse can’t confidently and patiently stand for the same duration that it takes to get feet worked on, adding someone who’s asking them to do it on three legs isn’t going to improve in one farrier visit. Separation anxiety and poor handling practices should be addressed on our time, not the farrier’s. This means working and improving on ourselves to have this in our horses, this may mean further education for HANDLER and horse. The farrier has the right to stop a session at any time and reschedule if the horse is not prepared, it is not the farrier’s job to educate the horse to be handled - but our farrier should be considerate to our young or troubled horses’ needs. This means allowing time for the horse so it takes less time for further sessions. We don’t just have a responsibility to our horses, but to our farriers as well. Good farriers come to well prepared clients, and a person will always do more than what is expected when they feel considered and appreciated. 15.01.2022 Attended a mare this morning at a local vet clinic, who had a pedal bone sequestrum surgically removed from her foot yesterday. The mare now has a hospital plate on to provide support to her foot and to keep the area clean and let it heal up nicely.

14.01.2022 This big fella coming along way since Feb slow process but results are paying off horse has been so tough through it all and is currently sound as a Bell. Is in full work and never had a issue with the foot being lame. Not long now and it will be fully healed. Cause from seedy toe got quite bad a creeped up his foot. Back in February I had cut out most of it and cleaned the rest out so the horse had kept his original wall to keep it solid. Has slowly grown down and has mended quite well.

14.01.2022 Another hospital plate done attended this fella who had a abscess blow out. Had got infected and rotted underneath his sole which caused his sole to die and fall out. He is missing 3/4 of his sole. I happen to get a shoe on with a hospital plate. Have packed the foot with iodine swabs and bolted the plate on top. Horse is sound and now on the road to recovery. Will keep everyone updated with weekly updates.

13.01.2022 Here a horse that had bad seedy toe cause by thrush build up in between the hoof wall and laminar which then causes wall separation the first time I attended the horse it had reach the coronet band it has started to grow out nicely. Pictured shown are 6th feb and 12 weeks later which is now

11.01.2022 Little seedy toe runs up coronet band has been cut out with a heart bar shoe to relieve the pressure. Horse is sound and it feeling a lot better.

02.01.2022 Another hospital plate done right. This Mare had a abscess and had got infected. Her sole had died in one half of her foot which therefore required me to carve out and clean up. We have nailed on a hospital plate and packed the foot with soaked iodine gauze. The Mare was quite happy and is now sound. Will keep everyone posted and updated with weekly updates.
