10.01.2022 SYSTEMS ENGINEERED BICYCLE DESIGN Areodynamic resistance accounts for 90% of the drag when cycling @ speed. Viscous drag is the friction created around the riders skin surface layers while form drag is related to the shape of the cyclist & represents the major portion of the overall drag. Reducing the wake flow by streamlining the rider with the bike & hence minimizing the frontal area becomes the key strategy. A complete bike aero-design with steep geometry are thus mandator...y for optimal performance. Metabolic rate & respiratory function can be compromized when excessive body positioning is applied hence a balance between power output & aerodynamics is vital. A combination of field testing via empirical assessment (trial & error) in concert with CFD manufactured product delivers the ideal outcome. A wholistic prospective integrating the athlete, engineer & most critically the sports scientist or experienced mechanic into a common arena is the way of the future.
