21.01.2022 Front wheel lift practice

19.01.2022 Hi All, Kids rides will be cancelled until further notice. Yack parents should still be able to get out there with their kids, though. See you again as soon as we can!

17.01.2022 Kid's biking activity number 3 - front and rear wheel lifts. This is a good one to give your driveway a bit of a workout, seeing as it's probably feeling unloved now! Being able to lift either wheel is a critical skill for so many actions on the tracks or around town. For those of you doing the free Wheelie course, the front wheel lift is a completely different process to that involved in doing a wheelie, so don't get the two skills mixed up. The front wheel lift is done wit...hout power. That is, it is simply pulling up on the handlebars with the arms bent while standing on the pedals. It can be practiced while just rolling around the driveway. To create a challenge, place a stick or small plank on the ground and get the riders to try and: a) bounce the tyre off it to give the front wheel an extra boost; b) try to clear the object with the front tyre, gradually going slower and slower to encourage greater lift; c) lift the front wheel onto the object and stop the bike with the wheel still on it. For those who are pretty good at this, make the object larger and larger. As it gets larger, getting the rear wheel over it will become more difficult. Rear wheel lifts are significantly more challenging for most riders. The aim here is to roll along standing with the pedals horizontal, and then to 'weight', and then immediately 'unweight' the pedals while using the hands and wrists to twist the handlebars up and forward. Doing this as the back wheel bumps over something can help the sensation of the wheel 'popping' up. DO NOT USE THE FRONT BRAKES while doing this, otherwise you'll almost certainly end up OTB (over the bars). See more

17.01.2022 You can skid on any bike, even an old rim brake worn out junker.

15.01.2022 Biking activity number 6 - 'ratchet' pedaling. Pedals were made to go around and around weren't they? Yep, but if there's something in the way, such as a big rock, or a steep log hop, you may not be able to put in a full pedal stroke. This is where 'ratcheting' the pedals comes in handy. This activity introduces the skill of ratcheting in a simple, non-threatening, appropriately isolated situation. Find a bit of slightly sloping ground and aim up the slope. Select a low (easy...) gear. Begin by pushing down on the pedal as if you're about to pedal up the slope, stop that pedal stroke at about the 4 or 5 o'clock position, and reverse pedal to bring the foot back up to the 1 o'clock position. This 'reverse' has to be quick, so that you don't lose momentum. Now keep repeating those two actions to impel yourself slowly forward. Increase the degree of difficulty by turning a corner while ratcheting, or going up a steeper slope, or ratcheting over an obstacle such as a large brick or a square profile street gutter. 12.01.2022 Biking activity number 4 - skids. It doesn't get much simpler than this one, pedal, roll, stand up, and lock on your rear brake while shifting your weight back slightly to avoid being thrown forward. So, what's the point? Doing skids is great for younger riders to get the idea of which brake is which, and standing up on the pedals, which is crucial for being able to control the bike properly on the trails. For more advanced riders, doing skids allows them to use their body to... push the bike around underneath them, another essential basic skill. At a simple level, just get the kids to do a short straight skid on the flat on gravel or grass. Get more advanced by introducing a slope, getting them to skid sideways (both ways), placing a piece of cardboard on the grass and braking when the rear wheel is on top of it (super slippery). Safety note: Please make sure that your child is confident with which brake is which. If they grab the front brake, they may well go OTB (over the bars). Also make sure that there's plenty of space where they are skidding. As they get faster, and the skids get longer, there's more potential for overshooting or running into a goat. See more

12.01.2022 Iso biking activity number eight. Another borrowed from Rozy's video, and this one is called bike golf. So if you watched it yesterday, then she presents it much better. Anyway, visions of kids wielding golf aticks aren't that accurate, it's much more low key than that. The aim is to promote confidence in riding one handed, so if your young rider isn't up to one handed riding, don't try this just yet. All you need is two people, a golf ball, a large sock, and a flat area. Person 1 is on the bike, person 2 holds out the ball in one hand, and the sock in the other. Person 1 attempts to pick up the ball from their hand, ride around the other side, and deposit the ball in the sock. If that didn't make sense, watch the video.

11.01.2022 Hi Kobbos, been a long time between rides! So, to make an opportunity to get the kids back on their bikes in the forest, we will be meeting at the trailhead tomorrow (Saturday 18th) at 3pm for a group ride. Parents, this is not a drop and go ride - you’ll need to make sure your child is supervised. Hope you can make it!

11.01.2022 It's raining here now, so the biking activities are indoors. Clear that stranded asset of a car out of the garage or carport, clear away any dangerous objects, and get the kids in there on their bikes. The first thing to do is to get them to try and stay on the bike while moving as slowly as possible. If they can stay stationary, that's called a track stand -this move is so cool that it will allow them to attract members of the opposite sex later in life. Next, get some chalk... and draw a big (as big as possible to start with) figure 8 on the floor. Get the kids to firstly ride around it, then as they get better, to ride on the line, then finally, ride inside the lines. If you have a slippery floor, that can be good for mini-skid practice. Finally, get a brick, paver, plank or whatever, and get the kids to ride over, along or around it. All of these activities will also help you to improve your riding skills, so do it along with the kids, it'll help maintain their motivation too. See more

09.01.2022 Hi Kobbos, well these days it seems the only certain thing is uncertainty. So, let's meet up while we still can for a family ride tomorrow (Sat 1/8) at 3pm. Usual place. Hope to see you there!

08.01.2022 After the success of a low-fuss Kobbos session last weekend, we will be out at the trail head again at 3pm this Saturday to explore some trails. All welcome. Parents ensure your child has supervision.

07.01.2022 Indoors - Rolling over an obstacle

05.01.2022 Here’s a couple of little legends who received a very special package in the mail this week. Congratulations to Phia and Spencer for winning your age groups in the Alpine Cycling Club/Cyclepath Junior MTB series!

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, we're up to number seven of ten. Today's exercise is another quick and simple one which I'm borrowing from Rozy's video which I've linked to below. The aim is to be able to avoid an object while making a tight turn. This happens pretty often on the trail where there's a rock or root in the middle of a corner, and you can't put both tyres outside it, or inside it. So, the solution is to put the front tyre outside, and the rear tyre inside the object. For the exer...cise, we'll be using one or two small objects, Rozy suggests plush toys, but if running over them may result in child trauma, choose something less loveable. Start with one object, and aim to ride slowly at it, then turn around it with the front tyre, and aim to get the rear tyre to pass it on the opposite side. Turn around and do the same thing, but with the tyres on the opposite side of the object this time. Graduate to using two objects. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Csj_MYupyE0&feature=youtu.be

01.01.2022 Social isolation bike related activity number 9 - the one hour pallet-ramp construction challenge. This is a real-construction-make-it-with-your-kids project which will result in a small, lightweight ramp or jump made out of a single pallet, and it should take less than an hour to make. Disclaimer/warning first though; the product of this project is a ramp or jump which kids may want to use to ride over or to jump their bike off. Either of these two activities could result in...Continue reading
