17.01.2022 Officially known as the Narrabundah Reservoir, this giant tank holds 18 million litres of water and supplies water to the inner south of Canberra. Previously pl...agued by graffiti, it is now hoped that the new art will deter the unwanted scribble of the past. It was painted in July 2019 by well known Canberra artist Geoff Filmer who was assisted by his father, an artist in his own right who is a well known sculptor. The mural features an amazing display of local flora and fauna including banksias, paper daisies, goannas, pelicans and so much more. These great photos were supplied by Penny Smith

11.01.2022 "This painting portrays my wife Kimberley and her cat Noam. Kimberley has featured in many of my paintings, falling into the role of muse. Often portraying a ch...aracter in some ambiguous narrative, the task of painting her strict portrait offered a different direction. The image is inspired by northern Renaissance portraiture, particularly that of Holbein. I found the rigid formality of this format incredibly interesting, as it is completely at odds with the often sexualised, pseudo-candid selfies that flood our visual vocabulary. A bizarre image to the modern eye, this format allowed for a great expression of Kimberley’s character." 10.01.2022 Today is #NationalSorryDay. Each year on May 26th National Sorry Day is held to acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations. The National Portra...it Gallery wishes to acknowledge this day, and pay our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people: the traditional owners of the land on which the National Portrait Gallery stands. This portrait from our collection depicts Matilda House, Ngambri Elder, adorned in a possum-skin cloak on the day she performed the Welcome to Country ceremony at the opening of the 42nd Parliament of Australia in 2008 the very first time such a ceremony was held at the Australian Parliament. The following day on 13 February 2008 Kevin Rudd made The National Apology to the Stolen Generations. Matilda House contributed to the 'Bringing Them Home' report into the Stolen Generations. 03.01.2022 (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the following post contains images of people who have died.) . Today, 3 June, the final day of N...ational Reconciliation Week, is #MaboDay: marking the anniversary of the Australian High Court’s landmark Mabo decision, which removed the myth of terra nullius from Australian law and recognised the unique rights that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have to land and waters according to traditional laws and customs, paving the way for the legal recognition of land rights known as native title. Koiki (Eddie) Mabo was born in the Torres Strait and moved to the mainland as a young man. He emerged as a leader in the Torres Strait Islander community in Townsville, Queensland where he was instrumental in founding the Aboriginal and Islander Health Service. He was also co-founder and director of the Townsville black community school which was one of the first institutions of its kind. Mabo is best known for the instigation, with four other Torres Strait Islanders, of legal proceedings to establish traditional ownership of their land. The 10-year legal battle, known as the Mabo case, was finalized in 1992, after going through the Queensland Supreme Court and the High Court of Australia. This was a significant ruling which refuted the idea of terra nullius and led to the Native Title Bill of 1993. This week we've been sharing portraits each day from our collection as part of #NationalReconciliationWeek2020, under the theme 'In This Together' Reconciliation Australia [Eddie Mabo (after Mike Kelley's 'Booth's Puddle' 1985, from Plato's Cave, Rothko's Chapel, Lincoln's profile) No.3, 1996 by Gordon Bennett, synthetic polymer paint on canvas Gordon Bennett Estate with permission from Gail Mabo.] https://bit.ly/3dsBK4e #NationalReconciliationWeek2020 #NRW #NationalReconciliationWeek #ReconciliationWeek2020 #NRW2020 #InThisTogether #InThisTogether2020 #Reconciliation #PortraitAu #NationalPortraitGallery #NPG #PortraitureFromHome #MuseumFromHome #EddieMabo #GordonBennett
