23.01.2022 It is with great joy that we announce that Newtown Synagogue will be open for prayer services this Friday night and Shabbat morning! The Services will be at 6:00pm Friday night and 9:30am Saturday morning. Thank G-d the spread of COVID-19 has dropped almost completely across NSW and the NSW Government now allows religious services at houses of worship for up to 50 people at a time. The Sydney Beth Din have also issued guidelines allowing services with necessary safety precaut...ions. While we’re glad to resume services, we must continue to be vigilant for people’s safety. If you would like to attend, please be adhere to the following procedures: *** Government guidelines require that we have a register of all attendees. To sign up to attend the Friday night service or Shabbat day service, please fill out the following form: http://shul.org.au/service-times/register-to-attend-service/ Attendance will be on a "first come, first served" basis, so if 50 people have registered before you for a specific service then we will contact you to put you on the list for another service. If we do not contact you then you can assume that your registration was successful. *** Social distancing must be maintained at all times, with at least 1.5 metres between people. In our Synagogue this means that there should be three empty seats between yourself and the next person. *** Wash your hands with soap at the sink in the Lobby upon entry *** Face masks are advisable, however not essential. Please refrain from attending if: During the last 14 days you had a persistent cough, sore throat, sneezing, blocked or runny nose, or temperature exceeding 37.5 degrees Celsius, or experienced any loss of smell or taste. Please consult with your Doctor before attending if: You are over 70 years of age, or younger than that but have had any form of heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, liver disease, obesity, diabetes, compromised immune system, respiratory disease, recurring high blood pressure, asthma, auto-immune disease, cancer or epilepsy or other co-morbidity. As per Beth Din instructions we will not be able to serve food, and it will just be the service. So no return to Friday night dinners or Shabbat lunches just yet, although we do look forward to resuming them in the near future as soon as we are allowed to! Due to the resumption of services at the Synagogue we will no longer be doing a Live Broadcast on Friday afternoons, however we will still be doing the Havdalah Broadcasts on Saturday night at 7:00pm. You can watch it at this link: www.facebook.com/rabbielifeldman Warm regards and Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Eli and Rebbetzin Elka Feldman & the Board of Newtown Synagogue

15.01.2022 We are absolutely devastated by the tragedy in Meron, Israel! 44 people dead and many wounded. They came with joy in their hearts to celebrate a religious festival and were removed in body bags and Ambulances We pray for speedy healing of the wounded, comfort to the bereaved and may the souls of those who lost their lives Rest In Peace ... I am sharing below a post written by my dear friend and colleague Rabbi Shlomo Litvin. I join him in his call for Jewish women and girls around the world to make a special effort to light Shabbat candles this afternoon and have in mind the souls of those who passed away today. If you are male and live in a household with no females, then you should light the Shabbat candles. Candle lighting time today here in Sydney is at 4:58pm. A how-to guide is here: https://www.chabad.org//jewish/How-to-Light-Shabbat-Candles At Newtown Synagogue tonight at 6pm as part of our Shabbat prayers will be saying a special healing prayer for the wounded and memorial prayers for the deceased. Please make an effort to attend. Following the service will be our weekly communal Shabbat dinner. To strengthen Jewish unity at this difficult time a generous donor (who has chosen to remain anonymous) has come forward to fully sponsor our Shabbat dinner tonight at Newtown Synagogue. All are welcome to attend and register for free for this evening. If you are in Sydney and are able to attend we would be honored to have you join us as we gather in solidarity. Registration is required for COVIDSAFE purposes. This is the link to register: https://yac.chabadsuite.net/civicrm/event/info%3Fid%3D1

15.01.2022 My heart is torn open. As the festival of Lag B'Omer, a joyous celebration of unity and love of one's fellow Jew began in Israel earlier today, a tragic acciden...t occured. While reports are still coming in, it seems evident that the worst has happened, and there are multiple deaths, and catastrophic injuries R"L. When I had the privilege to live in the the Holy Land, I would often walk the valley from my Yeshiva in Tzfas to the mountain of Meron, to pray at the resting place of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, the compiler of the Zohar, and a hero of Jewish continuity. A highlight each year was Lag B'Omer, when hundreds of thousands of Jews would join together in Meron, at his resting place, and celebrate his legacy. The joy of Lag B'Omer in Meron is indescribable, as bonfires rage, and Jews of every background celebrate together, as one people. Every person who comes to the Rashbi is family. As I watch the reports of the devastating news, I see the pain of my family. I see the catastrophic pain caused to those hurt, and to the families of those who lost their lives. Lag B'Omer comes between Passover and Shavuos, a period we refer to as the Omer. During this period, we mourn the loss of the students of Rabbi Akiva who passed away in a tragic plague. Our mourning only ceases on Lag B'Omer, when we celebrate the life of Rabbi Shimon, a surviving student of Rabbi Akiva, who taught that loving your fellow Jew is an essential principle of Judaism. Today however, that joy is marred by the pain we feel for and with our brothers and sisters. Lag B'Omer is celebrated with festive bonfires, yet tonight, essential lights were snuffed out. Tomorrow, as Lag B'Omer concludes, Shabbos will begin. Before it does, my wife will light a fire of her own, to beckon in the Shabbos, and the peace and tranquility that accompany it. This week, in honor of Lag B'Omer, and in memory of those holy sparks removed from our world, I ask you to join her. Where ever you are in the world, light a candle as Shabbos comes in, and bring much needed illumination into the world. The time in Lexington is 8:10 pm. May God bring a speedy recovery to all those in need, and may He comfort the families among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Ad Mosai!
