17.01.2022 EXCITEMENT at YAKAMIA TODAY! Today when students arrived at school they found themselves in an exciting situation with a meteor landing, strange footprints, and a nest of giant eggs in the library. We have had investigators in to solve our mystery, take samples and ensure our school is safe. The experience was to engage students in writing, providing an opportunity to use their imaginations and get excited about the possibilities of what could have happened. :-)

09.01.2022 At Yakamia PS we are encouraging our families to consider different ways of reducing the use of plastic in daily life. Taking reusable containers to school is one way to reduce our use of plastic. In Week 2, from Monday to Wednesday, we are asking all families who would like to participate to cut single use plastic from lunchboxes and be part of Plastic Free July. Students who have single use plastic free lunchboxes next week, will receive an extra turtle ticket. These posters about Plastic Free July at Yakamia were made by some of our awesome Year 3 students

06.01.2022 Waste Free Wednesdays Starting Week 2 we will be doing Waste Free Wednesdays at Yakamia. We are hoping to encourage children to take a role in protecting the environment and helping plan their lunchboxes to REDUCE waste. On Waste Free Wednesdays, students are encouraged to put together a lunchbox that has no rubbish for the bin (except food waste like apple cores). This can be achieved by using partitioned lunchboxes, putting food into reusable containers, sandwich keepers, ...or using something like waxiwraps. REFUSE the rubbish. Waste Free Wednesday is not compulsory and does not require parents to purchase new lunchboxes. For those who want to participate we ask students to REUSE containers that are in the cupboard and say no to gladwrap and zip lock bags. Aim for a day without food in packets maybe the kids could make pikelets to take the next day, maybe a piece of fruit. Get the kids involved in making their lunch and helping the environment. Some of our students have been creating digital posters to promote Waste Free Wednesday and we look forward to sharing these with you in the coming week. Hope you are as enthusiastic to try it as we are. Working towards a better school and community environment. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Yakamia Sustainability Committee
