14.01.2022 When Dr Shirota (1899-1982) began investigating lactic acid bacteria, living standards in Japan were low due to malnutrition and poor sanitation, which resulted in a number of digestive disorders and general ill health. Dr. Shirota became convinced that beneficial bacteria were the key to a long and healthy life; with the potential to improve health standards. His determination led to a breakthrough in 1930, when he successfully researched a unique lactic acid bacterium with the ability to survive the acidic conditions of the stomach. The bacterium was named the Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain in honour of his research. This led to Dr. Shirota developing a fermented, milk-based drink to deliver the Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain to the gut, calling it ‘Yakult’, creating the world’s first commercial probiotic drink.

Yakult is suitable for Australians living with diabetes to consume as part of a balanced diet. If you are looking for a lower sugar option, Yakult LIGHT contains 75% less sugar and 40% less calories than Yakult Original.

06.01.2022 Yakult should always be stored below 4 degrees Celsius. High temperatures can cause the lactic acid bacteria in Yakult to weaken and even die . Although short periods are OK, if Yakult is left unrefrigerated for too long the quality can suffer, so always be careful. Using a microwave or direct heat can damage the Yakult bottle (in addition to impacting the quality of Yakult), so please don't do it.
