23.01.2022 Alison Elvin led a fascinating paddock walk at Kangiara this afternoon. She taught us how to identify a range of Eucalypts and Acacias in the field, plus some beautiful forbs that were in flower. This event was organised by YAN and was funded by the Community Environment Program. Thanks to all participants for coming along - we hope to hold more paddock plant ID walks in coming months, so please get in touch if you'd like to take part.

22.01.2022 Paddock Walk at Kangiara - this Saturday 2-4pm - https://mailchi.mp//paddock-walk-at-kangiara-this-saturday

22.01.2022 Kath McGuirk, Chair of YAN, was the deserving (and surprised) recipient of the John Betts award at last night's YAN AGM. Nan Betts attended the AGM to present the award to Kath. Thanks for everything you do Kath!! Below is a summary of some of Kath's achievements from Linda Thane and Elizabeth Goodfellow from Bowning Bookham Landcare Group. "Kath was a founding member of the restarted Bowning Bookham Landcare Group in 2016 , and in the all-important secretary role, played a k...ey role in developing the group into the large and active Landcare Group it is now. Kath has shown both enthusiasm and leadership, which has enabled regional Landcare groups to undertake a number of worthwhile projects, including extensive tree planting operations on many properties in the district and community projects such as habitat regeneration at Bowning Cemetery. Always keen to educate herself by attending workshops and field trips, Kath has championed projects which focus on teaching new skills to school children, landowners and the whole community. These include monitoring habitat change, bird surveys, identifying and collecting native seeds and regenerative pasture management. Landcare nurseries and seed collections are Kath’s passion. Kath lead the set up and maintenance of the Bowning Bookham Landcare Group’s first nursery at Bowning Public School, and has facilitated the development of two nurseries at the homes of members within Bowning-Bookham. These nurseries have since raised over 20,000 seedlings for members and for distribution to other landholders in the area. At one nursery, a greenhouse has been added to enable seed raising over winter, greatly enhancing the group’s capacity to grow plants. Both of the Bowning-Bookham Landcare nurseries are participating in the exciting Climate Ready Project, growing species from different regions to support research into climate adaptation. Kath has also been an essential member of the YAN Climate Ready Vegetation project team since 2018 - including setting up the YAN nursery managers network and developing the nursery practices needed to support a trial of multiple species with multiple seed provenances. Taking the Landcare nursery coordination, scale and practices to a whole new level. Of course, all of this requires money as well as hard work, and Kath has been an effective grant applicant, and always followed through with results, which is essential for future projects. Most importantly, Kath’s can-do attitude and cheerfulness has helped sustain the group’s enthusiasm through a very tough period for farmers, which augers well for coping with whatever lies ahead."

18.01.2022 Today at the Yass Landcare Community Nursery we started sowing for our fire affected Bemboka clients. However before we sow anything it is necessary to fit tubes into the styrofoam boxes (which we are using for this project) - fill the tubes with native potting mix - sow native seed, some of which has been secured from the Bega seed saver group and other from Greening Australia ACT. The end product from today's volunteer work are 20 plus styrofoam boxes (which totals approximately 1000 tubes. Sowing and growing for our Bemboka fire affected landholders was made possible via a Landcare Australia Michael King grant which will be delivered during 2021.

08.01.2022 Our final property walk for the year was another success. Gary and Hansie Armour showed us around their beautiful property and explained their transition to regenerative grazing practices, and the establishment of many kilometres of tree lines and tree blocks (with plans for more to come!). Alison Elvin had everyone captivated with her knowledge and clear explanation about grasses, shrubs, trees and ecological processes. A big thanks to Gary, Hansie and Alison as well as everyone for coming along. This event was funded by the Communities Environment Program.

08.01.2022 Yass Landcare Group members and friends met on the Mundoonen Range on Saturday for a walk in the Nature Reserve. Park ranger, Susannah Power, led the walk, starting at the entrance to the Park on the Hume Highway. The weather forecast had promised a heatwave, so we kept the walk quite short. But under the shade of the trees, a breeze kept us surprisingly cool.... Even as we gathered in the carpark we could see numerous bright purple flowers scattered through the understorey - fringe lilies! The wet spring has brought on plenty of other wildflowers too: the rich blue of finger flowers, dianella, and tiny unknown orchids. We were a little too late in the season for donkey orchids, but we hit the jackpot with red-anthered wallaby grass. Apparently the anthers are only visible for a day or two every year - and we were there! Another highlight of the walk was the trigger plant we found. The junior landcarers were entranced by the tiny pink flowers, delicately poised to bend over and daub their pollen on to the back of any visiting insect - or little boy’s finger! It was a treat to observe the bush in this special season, especially with the help of our knowledgeable ranger. (By Kate Wilson, Yass Landcare Group)

07.01.2022 YAN nurseries are working together to sow Eucalyptus melliodora Yellow Box, Acacia deanei Green wattle and Dodonea viscosa Hop as part of the YAN Climate Ready seedling trial. Yass Landcare Nursery sowed Eucalyptus melliodora seed one month ago, from a range of local localities including Canberra, Weston Creek and Capitains Flat. Seed collected from hotter-drier or colder-wetter localities has also been sown such sites include Moree, Lithgow, Mathoura, Elginvale, Coonabarabran, Holbrook. To date only one locality has had poor germination rates. If you are interested finding out more about this Climate Ready project please refer to the YAN web site.

01.01.2022 A final friendly reminder about our last property walk for 2020, happening this Sunday, 9:30-11:30am. Get in touch to RSVP: [email protected] The current owners took over the running of "Te Kooti" in 1995. Originally denuded of trees and with degraded soils and pastures, the owners realised they needed to make changes and searched for alternative grazing methods. They also carried out a big direct tree seeding program - trees that are now 21 years old. Over the years they have connected existing blocks of trees and created corridors for wildlife and in doing so creating extra paddocks to improve the holistic grazing of stock. Te Kooti now has many kilometres of tree lines and tree blocks with plans for more to come.
