18.01.2022 UPDATE ON THE GREEN WATTLE CREEK FIRE including the new BANNABY FIRE: Posted at 1535 on 4.2.2020 The Green Wattle Creek (GWC) fire is now at 'patrol' status.... Local crews have today patrolled the Wanganderry Sector of the GWC fire to locate and attend to any hot spots to make safe. These crews are being supported by aviation resources. A new fire which was started by lightning is burning in the Newfoundland Rd and Guineacor Creek Firetrail area and to the ESE of Guineacor Creek. Local RFS and NPWS crews are in attendance and are undertaking containment strategies. This new fire has run into a previuos burnt area of the GWC fire however has a significant area of uncontained fire edge. Residents in the Bannaby area are advised to not become complacent and remember the following three important messages: 1 - Continue to monitor the situation and progress of the fire 2 - Have an up to date Bush Fire Survival Plan that ALL members of the family are familiar with if impacted by fire 3 - Be prepared to act quickly if the situation changes

This means land owners and land managers in these are...as must now obtain a free Fire Permit from their local fire authority before lighting any fires, including hazard reduction burns. Even if you’ve been using fire for many years, safe burning is your responsibility. Contact your local Fire Control Centre to obtain your free Fire Permit and follow its conditions. Heavy fines apply for the unsafe use of fire or if your fire escapes. Don’t be the fire risk to your community. Use fire safely. For further information about the BFDP and Fire Permits, go to www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/BFDP

15.01.2022 For the first time since early July 2019, there are currently no active bush or grass fires in NSW. That’s more than 240 days of fire activity for the state. Photo: Wolter Peeters. SMH

15.01.2022 FACT: There will never be as many fire trucks as there are houses. Do not depend on a fire truck being available at your home. But if you and your home are well... prepared, you stand a better chance of surviving a bush fire. There are simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bush fire, like keeping the grass low and having a cleared area around your home. 13.01.2022 RFS APPRECIATIVE OF THE ASSISTANCE GIVEN BY TRANSPORT HERITAGE NSW DURING RECENT BUSHFIRES. The Southern Highlands Team of the NSW RFS would like to express its... gratitude for the assistance and cooperation of the Rail Transport Museum located in Thirlmere and in particular to the Rail Operations Manager, Daniel Page. Inspector David Stimson, Community Safety Officer of the SHT and also part of the Green Wattle Creek Incident Management Team (IMT) explains: After the Green Wattle Creek fire crossed Lake Burragorang and impacted on parts of Oakdale the IMT Planning Team went into full swing looking at the potential paths and likely future impacts of the fire. I told the Team about the fires of 2000 and 2001 where the local Balmoral Captain of the day, also a member of the Rail Transport Museum, had arranged for three water ‘gins’ to be shunted from Thirlmere to Balmoral to boost the local water capability. I was then tasked with contacting the Rail Operations Manager, Daniel Page, to see how they could assist with this current fire. Daniel immediately agreed to do everything he could and the next day advised that the Museum would provide 3 ‘gins’ but the track condition prevented the movement from going beyond Buxton. The transfer movement took place the next day and the ‘gins’ remained at Buxton until they were no longer required. During their stay in the siding at Buxton they were the source of much needed water particularly on the day that the fire took its run through Balmoral, Buxton and Bargo. When the Currowan fire started to move north towards the Shoalhaven River and the potential of the fire crossing the river became real I suggested to the Planning Team that we look again at boosting water capability particularly in Wingello as it was the only station that still had usable sidings. Daniel was again contacted and the request put to him. As he explained this movement had a lot more barriers as it would be a main line movement. Again he came good and the arrangements put in place. [There is a short video of the arrival and shunting of the ‘gins’ at Wingello with this post. Excuse the voices of a couple of railway ‘gunzels’ standing near the camera] It was agreed that two of the vehicles would be placed at Wingello and the other at Bundanoon As it turned out this was a great move as the water supply was heavily used on the night of the fire impact into Wingello and for several days later. This great relationship with the Rail Transport Museum resulted in the supplement of much needed water for fire fighting and whilst we may not see fires of the same magnitude for some time I’m confident that they would step up again given similar requests. #thnsw #nswrailmuseum
