21.01.2022 WINE EDUCATION: Did you know our Ironheart Shiraz got its name because it is grown in Ironstone soils? A high percentage of ironstone fragments are remnants of the 56 million year old geology and are deep red in colour; the heart of the wine is the soil it grows in.... Ironheart is sourced exclusively from our Block 15 which is only 1.8 hectares, and It has a north facing aspect. "The shiraz from this block has a unique character on the estate, and it always shows clearly when I’m tasting our Shiraz batches without knowing what blocks I’m tasting Peter Fraser, Winemaker. It shows fragrance and pretty aromatics, yet also shows concentration of flavour. It is built around grainy tannins unique in their shape (somewhat rustic) with great length and persistence Peter Fraser. If you have tried our Ironheart Shiraz - do you think you can taste the difference Peter talks about?

15.01.2022 Today is the 50th anniversary of #EarthDay. We are celebrating this day by highlighting the activities we have at Yangarra that help sustain our earth. Picture 1: Jarrad in front of our reed beds, where our wash down waste from the winery is filtered by the reeds and then returned to the land. Picture 2: Dan adding staff room waste to our worm farm. Helping the earth can be done on both macro and micro scales. ... Picture 3: Craig in our staff operated veggie gardens. Yangarra staff are welcome to pick from at anytime. Picture 4 & 5: Peter Shoveling compost. Winery waste is composted (with additional organic substances including the minor biodynamic preparations) and then re-applied back onto the vineyard. This process is done on a manual basis. Picture 6 & 7: Alli enjoying a nature walk through our surrounds, and a koala resting in our gardens! We are always looking and working on ways to be sustainable and earth conscious. Today join us in nurturing our beautiful surrounds. #earthday50toast

14.01.2022 Currently reviewing our 2020 whites. Most have been sulphured but a few are still on skins. We will also take a quick look through our reds, although not too much to see as they are mostly still going through malolactic fermentation.

10.01.2022 As we come to the end of Harvest 2020 we are now focusing on the health of our vines, and invigorating microbial activity in our soils. Yangarra is farmed organically, and biodynamics is an integral part of our biological farming practices. Here are a few pictures that show the practices we have in place to align with our organic farming.

07.01.2022 It was a beautiful frosty morning today at Yangarra. Did you know that an early winter frost helps encourage wines into an even dormancy, this flows onto an even shoot growth and flowering in the spring. During dormancy, grapevines require a certain number of hours in 'chill temperatures'. So, we are happy to get frost at this time of year. It also happens to be very pretty!

06.01.2022 A lovely piece by Sarah Ahmed from Decanter who has put a spotlight on McLaren Vale wineries. In her latest article for the October issue of Decanter, Sarah Ahmed features Yangarra as one of the region’s 10 Names to Know. Calling our High Sands Grenache a modern classic". She highlights McLaren Vale’s success in balancing tradition and innovation, writing more than any other classic, premium-oriented Australian region, McLaren Vale succeeds in making excellent wines rooted in tradition, while cultivating new strengths. Thank you for the kind words Sarah.

02.01.2022 We are very excited to take delivery of the very first Schneckenleitner Austrian Oak Vat (known as a Fudre) in Australia. The Austrian cooperage was founded in 1628, and the Schneckenleitner family has been running the cooperage for five generations (since 1880). The Welding Oak is 100% Austrian Oak, which is very tight grain and low in aromatics, resulting in a very low impact vessel that really respects the fruit. This vat will be used for our 2020 Kingswood Shiraz, but a...fter the first year of use, we plan to use it for the 2021 High Sands Grenache. These pictures are of our winery team unwrapping our Foudre (and admiring it!). Bouchard Cooperages #bouchardcooperagescru #fassbinderieschneckenleitner
